Or The Sinking of J. Bruce Ismay Frances Wilson, Bloomsbury. Frances Wilson invokes Herman Melville to compare Ismay to Captain Ahab and even to Noah in this often ludicrous bookbut predominantly plumps for Joseph Conrad in her meditation on the life - and the elemental living - of this single individual, in whom is seemingly forever embarked the fate of fifteen hundred. The first syllable asserts enduring existence, the second an implication of twin alternatives. Ismay lived, and his reputation died. Had he not entered collapsible C it is scarcely imaginable that anyone would have branded him a coward. Instead mere mortality would have conferred its very opposite, in the palpable vein of an Isidor Straus or any other drowned potentate of the merchant classes. But such is a preserved-in-amber afterlife. With Ismay, though he now be dead, we can still poke the wounds. And so Wilson, as sanguinary soothsayer, enters into her very own launch — because this is a commercial voyage, complete with the richly absurd sales claim that Ismay fell in love with a married passenger on the maiden voyage. He did no such thing. It is as well that this work is largely a meditation — albeit with some interesting photographs and detail provided by the Cheape family — as the author seems only rudimentarily acquainted with the Titanic story. -

Harmonicats Style, As Did Most Trios of That Period
Har monica happenings in their trio called “The Harmonikings” from New Jer- sey. Chris, from his early teens was a fantastic player, Ad Rates & Specs actually a prodigy, but never in his early years did he actively pursue solo work or jazz. Their act mostly fea- tured the Harmonicats style, as did most trios of that period. His father passed away, causing Chris to back away from harmonica playing for a few years. He final- ly accepted an invitation to a Garden State Harmonica festival that featured Charley, Stan Harper and me do- ing a trio act. Apparently we awakened his desire to play again. Charley and I urged him to join the club. BLACK & WHITE ADS: He did so, and it has turned him into a highly regard- ed jazz artist on the harmonica festival circuit. He has made several jazz albums that are eagerly purchased 3.6 x 4.75 by those who experience his live performance playing. Then came Susan Rosenberg, Bob Beck, Phil Calta- › 1/4 page (3.6" x 4.75") bellotta, Rob Paparozzi and Lester Shultz, all of them great players eager to be in the harmonica sphere of Charley and the gang. Susan, a fine classical harmonica player joined the club to expand her musical category. She lists as a high- light of her career her friendship with the famed guitar- $50 per issue or $150 for 4 issues ist Les Paul and her frequent guest appearances with his band. She wanted Charley to tune up her jazz. She also produced both of Charley’s albums, Angel Eyes and Charles Leighton Classical.
