Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Allegro Andante molto—Vivace Andante About the Artists Svend Rønning, violin, is Chair of the Faculty of Stringed Instruments and Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University. He studied violin with Ann Tremaine at Pacific Lutheran University and with Syoko Aki, Sidney Harth and Jaap Schröder at Yale University, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. Svend is a founding and former member of the Rivanna String Quartet, in residence at the University of Virginia and is currently Artistic Director of the Second City Chamber Music Series, Tacoma’s award winning producer of classical chamber music. Dr. Rønning serves as Concertmaster of the Tacoma Symphony and has served previously as Concertmaster for the Charlottesville Symphony, the San Jose Symphony, the Spoleto Chamber Orchestra, and the Tacoma Opera Orchestra. Mary Manning, violin, is in her fourth season as a member of the Regency String Quartet and has been on PLU’s String Faculty since 2007. She is a Tacoma native and a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio where she studied both modern and baroque violin performance. Her extensive work as a baroque orchestral musician has included being a member of the Seattle, Portland, and Pacific (Vancouver BC) Baroque Orchestras. On modern violin Mary has played with the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, and the Tacoma Symphony in addition to serving as Concertmaster for the Northwest Sinfonietta during the 2005-2006 Season and as Concertmaster for Seattle Pro Musica’s Mozart Orchestra in 2005. Tacoma audiences will recognize her as the longtime Principal Second Violin of the Northwest Sinfonietta. In addition to her extensive experience as a violinist, Mary is also an avid violist on both modern and early instruments. Betty Agent, viola, is an Affiliate Artist at Pacific Lutheran University where, in addition to her Regency String Quartet duties, she teaches viola. An active chamber music player, Ms. Agent has performed in the Governor’s Chamber Music Series, the Second City Chamber Series and the Auburn Symphony Chamber Music Series. Ms. Agent has appeared as soloist with the Pacific Lutheran University Symphony Orchestra and the Auburn Symphony. She is currently Assistant Principal Viola of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and Principal Viola of the Auburn Symphony. Ms. Agent works in all the major recording studios in Seattle, playing for film scores and video games. She was able to combine her love of chamber music and the great outdoors when she joined the Beau Quartet in 2004 and 2005, presenting concerts for the Canyon Expedition River Rafting Trip in the Grand Canyon. Richard Treat, cello, joined the Regency String Quartet and the string faculty of Pacific Lutheran University in September, 2006. A native of Los Angeles, Richard earned both Bachelors and Masters Degrees from California State University at Los Angeles, where he studied with Stephen De’ak, Eleonore Schoenfeld, and Lucien LaPorte. Mr. Treat has worked with several orchestras in greater Los Angeles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Pasadena, Long Beach, and Glendale Symphonies. In addition, Richard has been principal cellist of the Santa Barbara and South Coast Symphonies, the Mozart Camerata, and the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra and played for many years with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and the Deodara String Quartet. He is now a member of the Max Aronoff Institute faculty in Kenmore, and is regularly featured in performances of solo and chamber music in the Northwest. Wolfgang Boettcher spielte bei den Wiener und Berliner Festwochen, den Salzburger Festspielen, dem Festival Maris Paris, Suites for solo cello dem English Bach Festival, dem Lockenhaus Festival, in Kuhmo (Finnland), regelmäßig Wolfgang Boettcher beim Festival Kusatsu im Japan und bei zahlreichen anderen Festspielen in aller Welt. Konzertreisen führten ihn in alle europäischen Länder einschliesslich der UDSSR/GUS sowie nach Japan, Südamerika, Ostasien und Israel. Bis 1976 war Wolfgang Boettcher Solocellist des Berliner Philharmonischen Orchesters. Er gab diese Position auf, um sich ganz seinen solistischen Aufgaben widmen zu können und übernahm gleichzeitig eine Professur an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Aus seiner Klasse sind mittlerweile viele junge und angesehene Cellisten hervorgegangen. Neben der solistischen Tätigkeit nimmt die Kammermusik im Leben Wolfgang Boettchers einen wichtigen Raum ein, von der Gründung an war er Cellist im „Brandis-Quartett“, bei den „12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker“ und den „Philharmonischen Solisten Berlin“. Wolfgang Boettcher hat zahlreiche Schallplatten eingespielt für DG, EMI, Nimbus und andere Firmen. Er gibt Meisterkurse in vielen europäischen Ländern sowie in Japan. Seit 1988 ist er Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Schönen Künste in München. Von 1986 bis 1992 war Wolfgang Boettcher zudem künstlerischer Leiter der Sommerlichen Musiktage Hitzacker.
