Teléfono 913601480 Ext. 5.! 628 21 38 74 NOTA DEL DIRECTOR La idea de “The Bridge Project” nació a partir de un simple deseo: que artistas, colaboradores y público de ambos lados del Atlántico experimentaran el trabajo, talento, y maestría teatral de unos y otros. Habiendo tenido el placer de trabajar tanto en Nueva York como en Londres, me di cuenta del poco intercambio que existe actualmente entre estas dos ciudades de gran tradición teatral. En 2002, mi décimo y último año como Director Artístico del Donmar Warehouse de Londres, me permití el lujo de dirigir Tío Vania de Chéjov y Noche de Reyes de Shakespeare. Posteriormente estas producciones fueron remontadas en el Harvey Theater de la BAM. Este doble cartel Londres/Nueva York fue el detonante para el inicio de las conversaciones que con el tiempo nos han llevado hasta The Bridge Project. Yo, junto con mi amigo Kevin Spacey, Joe Melillo de la BAM, y mi colaborador y productor asociado durante mucho tiempo Caro Newling empezamos a preguntarnos qué producción podría hacer desaparecer las barreras de un océano y la separación de las comunidades teatrales. Empezamos a ver como nuestra aventura transatlántica iba tomando forma y tenía dos hogares: uno en Nueva York en la BAM y uno en Londres en el Old Vic donde Kevin es el Director Artístico. Así pues, tengo el enorme placer de encontrarme una vez más aquí en este magnífico teatro trabajando simultáneamente en Chéjov y Shakespeare, en esta ocasión colaborando con el incomparable Tom Stoppard en su nueva versión de El jardín de los cerezos mientras también trabajo en el Cuento de Invierno, una de las últimas obras de Shakespeare – y todo con un reparto trasatlántico de excepcional talento especialmente reunido para este año inaugural de The Bridge Project. Sam Mendes SINOPSIS Después de cinco años en el extranjero, la sra. Ranevskya vuelve a casa porque su patrimonio y su tan amado Jardín de los Cerezos están a punto de ser vendidos para poder paliar las numerosas deudas familiares. Incapaz de comprender que el mundo que le rodea está cambiando para siempre, la familia ignora los ofrecimientos de ayuda y continúa justificando su extravagante tipo de vida. 5 THE CHERRY ORCHARD ! www.teatroespanol.es ! Teléfono 913601480 Ext. 5.! 628 21 38 74 ANTÓN CHÉJOV (1860-1904) 1860 Antón Pavlovich Chéjov nace en Taganrog, en el sur de Rusia, tercero de los seis hijos de un tendero. Su abuelo fue un siervo que compró la libertad de su familia en 1841. 1861 El zar Alejandro II promulga el Edicto de Emancipación que dio la libertad a los siervos. 1875 La familia de Chéjov huye a Moscú debido a la bancarrota pero Antón permanece en Taganrog hasta acabar la escuela. 1879 Chéjov se reúne con su familia e ingresa en la facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Moscú. 1880 Sus divertidos relatos cortos se publican bajo el pseudónimo de “El hermano de mi hermano”. Mantiene a la familia con sus ingresos. 1884 Empieza a practicar la medicina. 1886 Publica la recopilación de cuentos, Relatos abigarrados. 1887 Ivanov, su primera obra de teatro, se publica en Moscú. Publica también otra colección de relatos titulada En el Crepúsculo. 1888 Las publicaciones de Chéjov obtienen los elogios de la crítica y gana el Permio Pushkin. Se encuentra por primera vez con Constantin Stanislavski. 1890 Chéjov visita durante tres meses una colonia penal en Siberia, como trabajo de investigación para su obra, publicada por entregas, La Isla de Sajalin, 1892 Escribe Pabellón No. 6 y publica en periódicos de Moscú y San Petersburgo. Compra una finca en Melikhovo donde planta un huerto de cerezos. 1896 Escribe La Gaviota que se estrena en San Petersburgo. La producción es un fracaso. Se inaugura el Teatro de Arte de Moscú. La salud de Chéjov se deteriora por la tuberculosis. 1898 Bajo la dirección de Stanislavski, El Teatro de Arte de Moscú produce La Gaviota con gran éxito. 1899 El Teatro de Arte de Moscú produce Tío Vania. 1901 El Teatro de Arte de Moscú produce Las Tres Hermanas. Chéjov se casa con la actriz Olga Knipper. 1904 El Jardín de los Cerezos, última obra de Chéjov, se estrenó el 17 de enero, día de su 44 cumpleaños. En Julio, pocos días después de la publicación de El jardín de los Cerezos, Chéjov muere en Badenweiler, Alemania, donde recibía tratamiento para la tuberculosis. ARCHITECTURE Neoclassicism represented intelligence An example of 19th century and culture, so aristocrats of this time neoclassical architecture attempted to reflect this in their architecture. Features of neoclassical architecture include geometric forms, simplicity in structure, grand scales, dramatic use of Greek columns, Roman details, and French windows. Sorin’s estate includes French windows, and likely other elements of neoclassical style. Patrick Ness’ piercing novel A Monster Calls is brought to The Old Vic and Bristol Old Vic stages in The Old Vic’s 200th year in a powerful new adaptation by visionary director Sally Cookson. The cast includes Hammed Animashaun, Nandi Bhebhe, Selina Cadell, Matt Costain, Georgia Frost, Stuart Goodwin, Felix Hayes, Jonathan Holby, John Leader, Marianne Oldham, Matthew Tennyson and Witney White. ‘Stories are wild creatures,’ the monster said. ‘When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?’ Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved to America. But now his mum's very sick and she's not getting any better. His grandmother won't stop interfering and the kids at school won't look him in the eye. Then, one night, at seven minutes past midnight, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It's come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.

The latter profession had a significant influence on their works, which is evident in the frequent use of the doctor figure in their plays and prose works. What distinguishes Schnitzler and Chekhov from other writers of the fin-de,...si~c1e, is their ability to clinically observe psycho­ logical and social problems. Sclmitzler's and Chekhov's works contain "diagnosesJl made by their doctor figure. This study examines the respective qualities of a spectrum of six major types. There are mixed, mainly positive and mainly negative types of doctor figures, ranging from the revolutionary type down to the pathetic doctor figure and the calculating type.
