C’est tout d’abord grâce au programme vERSO (Ecosystem Responses to global change : a multiscale approach in the Southern Ocean) que ce travail a été possible, mais aussi grâce aux collaborations construites avant et pendant ce travail. Cette thèse a aussi été l’occasion de continuer à aller travailler sur le terrain des hautes latitudes à plusieurs reprises pour collecter les échantillons et rencontrer de nouveaux collègues. Par le biais de ces trois missions de recherches et des nombreuses conférences auxquelles j’ai activement participé à travers le monde, j’ai beaucoup appris, tant scientifiquement qu’humainement. -

The majority belongs to some of the largest phyla (Protozoa, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda), but representatives of small and inconspicuous groups such as Mesozoa, Rotatoria, Tardigrada and 4 ZOOLOGISCHE VERHANDELINGEN 156 (1977) Entoprocta have repeatedly been recorded as associates of echinoderms. Vertebrates living in echinoderms are exemplified by the fishes of the genus Carapus, which are associated with holothurians. Other examples from phyla which are rarely involved in intimate relation- ships with echinoderms are the ctenophore Coeloplana astericola, which was found in great numbers on Echinaster luzonicus from Amboina (Mortensen, 1927a) and the sponge Microcordyla asteriae, which was found at the bases of the arm spines of Asterias tenuispina at Naples (Zirpolo, 1927). Not only animals, but also a few plant species have been recorded to live in or on echinoderms. -

In his formal plan for the institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." The total coastline of Thailand, in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, is approximately 2,614 kilometres. The Gulf of Thailand, a major area in Southeast Asia, immediately to the west of the South China Sea is bordered by several nations, i.e. Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. Thailand has historically profited from the wealth of living and mineral resources in the Gulf. Several millions of people derive their livelihoods from fisheries and mineral resources produced from the Gulf of Thailand, however, several millions more are affected by changes in the environment including coral reef habitat, whether these changes are physical or political. The Gulf of Thailand is a semi-enclosed sea, as defined by the Law of the Sea that measures approximately 400 km by 800 km, covering an area of about 320,000 square kilometres. The Chao Phraya, Tha Chin, Mae Klong, and Bang Pakong rivers enter the gulf. There are also many small rivers that flow along the coast. -

Recently, β-diversity has been shown to consist of 2 distinct components: (1) spatial turnover and (2) species loss leading to nestedness. Both components structure deep-sea macrofaunal assemblages but vary in importance among taxa and ocean basins and with energy availability. Here, we present the first evidence for turnover and nestedness along a bathymetric gradient in 2 major megafaunal taxa, holothurians and asteroids. Turnover is the dominant com- ponent of β-diversity throughout bathyal and abyssal zones in both taxa, despite major differences in α-diversity and trophic composition. High spatial turnover suggests a role for evolutionary adaptation to environmental circumstances within depth bands. This pattern differs fundamen- tally from those in some macrofaunal groups in low-energy environments where abyssal nested- ness is high and diversity low, with diversity maintained partly by source-sink dynamics. As in most deep sea animals, the factors limiting bathymetric distribution of this species are unknown. Eggs were fertilized in vitro and incubated through the early embryonic cleavage stages at pressures that correspond to depths from 0 to 3000 m. The highest percentage of normal development occurred near the peak of the species distribution (2000 m), and virtually no normal development occurred at a pressure corresponding to 3000 m depth.
