ZooKeys 185: 73–78. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.185.3078 Abstract This dataset includes information on sea stars collected during the ANDEEP3 expedition, which took place in 2005. The expedition focused on deep-sea stations in the Powell Basin and Weddell Sea. Sea stars were collected using an Agassiz trawl (3m, mesh-size 500µm), deployed in 16 stations during the ANTXXII/3 (ANDEEP3, PS72) expedition of the RV Polarstern. Sampling depth ranged from 1047 to 4931m. Trawling distance ranged from 731 to 3841m. The sampling area ranges from -41°S to -71°S (latitude) and from 0 to -65°W (longitude). A complete list of stations is available from the PANGAEA data system (http://www.pangaea.de/PHP/CruiseReports.php?b=Polarstern), including a cruise report (http://epic-reports.awi.de/3694/1/PE_72.pdf). The dataset includes 50 records, with individual counts ranging from 1-10, reaching a total of 132 specimens. -

Asterozoans are free living, star-shaped echinoderms which are important components of benthic marine faunas worldwide. Their fossil record is, however, poor and fragmentary, probably due to dissarticulation of ossicles. In particular, fossil asteroids are infrequent in South America. A new species of starfish is reported from the early Valanginian of the Mulichinco Formation, Neuquén Basin, in the context of a shallow-water, storm-dominated shoreface environment. The specimen belongs to the Astropectinidae, and was assigned to a new species within the genus Tethyaster Sladen, T. antares sp. nov., characterized by a R:r ratio of 2.43:1, rectangular marginals wider in the interbrachial angles, infero- marginals (28 pairs along a median arc) with slightly convex profile and flat spines (one per ossicle in the interbrachials and two per ossicle in the arms). -

Open questions Echinodermata include relationships within asteroids and the status of the enigmatic taxon Xyloplax. -

The majority belongs to some of the largest phyla (Protozoa, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda), but representatives of small and inconspicuous groups such as Mesozoa, Rotatoria, Tardigrada and 4 ZOOLOGISCHE VERHANDELINGEN 156 (1977) Entoprocta have repeatedly been recorded as associates of echinoderms. Vertebrates living in echinoderms are exemplified by the fishes of the genus Carapus, which are associated with holothurians. Other examples from phyla which are rarely involved in intimate relation- ships with echinoderms are the ctenophore Coeloplana astericola, which was found in great numbers on Echinaster luzonicus from Amboina (Mortensen, 1927a) and the sponge Microcordyla asteriae, which was found at the bases of the arm spines of Asterias tenuispina at Naples (Zirpolo, 1927). Not only animals, but also a few plant species have been recorded to live in or on echinoderms. -
