AGRADECIMIENTOS A lo largo de mi tesis doctoral he tenido momentos de risas y de grandes alegrías, pero también algunos muy duros cargados de tristeza y frustración. Con la experiencia que he adquirido estos años cambiaría ciertas cosas, pero seguramente no hubiera aprendido todo lo que sé, ni sería la persona que soy ahora mismo. Sin embargo, de lo que sí que estoy totalmente convencida, es que no estaría escribiendo estas líneas si no fuera por todas las personas que me han acompañado a lo largo de estos años. Ahora, ha llegado el momento de dedicarles unas palabras de agradecimiento. A la gente del IATA, que me ha acompañado en mi primera etapa de tesis. Recuerdo como si fuera ayer la primera vez que entré como alumna colaboradora. Gracias por tantos momentos de risas, meriendas, viajes, cenas, fiestas….y de ciencia, claro. Perdonarme si no pongo los nombres de cada uno de vosotros, pero por suerte hemos sido muchísimos, y no me gustaría dejarme a nadie. Así que, GRACIAS A TODOS. Gracias a toda la gente de mi laboratorio 306 (Juan, Jordi, Edu, Sole, Alba…), especialmente a Empar, mi primera maestra, y a Patri y Gloria, mis otras maestras y compañeras. De ellas he aprendido mucho, no sólo cosas de trabajo. A la gente del CIB, que me han acogido como una más en mi segunda etapa de tesis. Todo empezó con una estancia hace 5 años y desde entonces sigo allí. Gracias a todas las personas con las que me cruzo por los pasillos y me dedican una sonrisa y un saludo. Gracias a mi gente de los cafés y comidas (Lorena, Sofi, Cris, Cristina, Ana, Virtu, Ramón, Gloria y Jose). Compartir el día a día con vosotros hace el trabajo mucho más llevadero. Hartmann2 and Marcus Lechner2,3* Abstract Background: 6S RNA is a regulator of cellular transcription that tunes the metabolism of cells. This small non-coding RNA is found in nearly all bacteria and among the most abundant transcripts. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) constitute a group of microorganisms with strong biotechnological relevance, often exploited as starter cultures for industrial products through fermentation. Some strains are used as probiotics while others represent potential pathogens. Occasional reports of 6S RNA within this group already indicate striking metabolic implications. A conceivable idea is that LAB with 6S RNA defects may metabolize nutrients faster, as inferred from studies of Echerichia coli.Thismay accelerate fermentation processes with the potential to reduce production costs. Similarly, elevated levels of secondary metabolites might be produced. Evidence for this possibility comes from preliminary findings regarding the production of surfactin in Bacillus subtilis, which has functions similar to those of bacteriocins. The prerequisite for its potential biotechnological utility is a general characterization of 6S RNA in LAB. Results: We provide a genomic annotation of 6S RNA throughout the Lactobacillales order. It laid the foundation for a bioinformatic characterization of common 6S RNA features. This covers secondary structures, synteny, phylogeny, and product RNA start sites. The canonical 6S RNA structure is formed by a central bulge flanked by helical arms and a template site for product RNA synthesis.

Bacteria shared between food and insects provide evidence for a limited conveyance to the host of the bacteria derived by the diet; more likely, the content of carbohydrates and proteins in the diets promotes changes in the insect’s microbiota.

To improve this knowledge, we char- acterize the microbiota among different developmental stages of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, which is considered one of the major pest of commodities world- wide. Using culture-independent approach based on Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing we characterized the microbiota of four developmental stages: eggs, first-, and last-instar larvae, and adult. A total of 1022 bacterial OTUs were obtained, showing a quite diversi- fied microbiota associated to all the analyzed stages. The microbiotas associated with P. interpunctella resulted almost constant throughout the developmental stages, with approx- imately 77% of bacterial OTUs belonging to the phylum of Proteobacteria. The dominant bacterial genus is represented by Burkholderia (64%), followed by Propionibacterium, Delftia, Pseudomonas,andStenotrophomonas. A core bacterial community, composed of 139 OTUs, was detected in all the developmental stages, among which 112 OTUs were as- signed to the genus Burkholderia. A phylogenetic reconstruction, based on the 16S rRNA, revealed that our Burkholderia OTUs clustered with Burkholderia cepacia complex, in the same group of those isolated from the hemipterans Gossyparia spuria and Acanthococcus aceris.
