When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing. -

A word read out of place can set a book on fire (“Superstar” 4.17) or send a person to a hell dimension (“Belonging” A2.19); a poorly performed spell can turn mortal enemies into soppy lovebirds (“Something Blue” 4.9); a word in a prophecy might mean “to live” or “to die” or both (“To Shanshu in L.A.” A1.22). -

ALIEN NATION "Body and Soul" Diane Frolov & Andrew Schneider Draft No. - Unknown Draft Date - Unknown - '90 ACT ONE FADE IN: EXT. LITTLE TENCTON - NIGHT Deserted. Murky broken by the intermittent pools of light from the street lamps. POUNDING FOOTSTEPS -- SHOUTS! A huge shadow of a running man looms against the wall of a tenement. A NEWCOMER GIANT fully seven feet tall, cradles a Newcomer infant GIRL as he runs. His eyes, full of fear, are the eyes of the hunted. HIS PURSUER are two men -- one a human, JONES; the other a Newcomer, PENN. TWO NEWCOMER TRANSIENTS male and female, stagger from CLANCY'S MILK BAR. They look up startled as the giant lurches toward them. GIANT {Help me...! Help me...!} The male backs away. The woman stares with demented glee, CACKLING. The giant runs from building to building, POUNDING on the doors. GIANT {Help me...!} Windows fly open -- Newcomers appear at them, calling out: HEY, GET AWAY FROM THERE! KEEP IT QUIET! I'M CALLING THE POLICE! The giant lumbers on, coming to: AN OVERPASS spanning a four-lane road. The giant pounds onto the overpass. Reaching the middle, he stops, staring fearfully at: ANOTHER NEWCOMER - HUDSON RIVER Who blocks his path. River holds a syringe. RIVER {No one's going to hurt you...} Terrified, the giant, starts backing away, but he's trapped by the other pursuers approaching from behind. RIVER Come with us... we won't hurt you. In the distance, a SIREN wails. River and his men close in. The giant sets the infant down. Grabbing the newcomer Penn, he hurls him at River. -

Cynthea Masson, Malaspina University-College “What Did You Sing About?”: Acts of Questioning in “Once More, with Feeling” "Am I crazy? Am I dreamin'? Am I marrying a demon?" Where else but on Buffy the Vampire Slayer could these questions not only be posed but sung as "a retro pastiche" (6.7)? Questions abound in "Once More, with Feeling"—the answers, however, are a little less forthcoming, as I will outline in this paper. Commentary on Buffy's musical episode often focuses on the revelations of truth that form the content of the songs.1 Richard Albright aptly synthesizes this view when he states, "We soon realize that each of the characters sings what they secretly feel, so the songs represent the real and the true" (para. 11). Or, as Anne Billson puts it, the characters are "compelled to blurt out their innermost secrets in song" (110). I disagree—in part. That is, the truths or secrets revealed in "Once More, with Feeling" may be a distraction from other truths or secrets that the characters are not yet able to admit aloud, even in song, even to themselves. If, as Rhonda Wilcox notes, the musical device of the episode "works like a soliloquy, in that we can be assured we will hear the interior truth for that character," then another aspect of the soliloquy should be considered (193; my emphasis).2 Anthony J. Gilbert argues that the speaker of a soliloquy "may say what he wants to believe is true, at a conscious level, but which he knows to be false, at an unconscious level" (223). -
