2 3 From director executive the Greetings,

Thanks to the generosity of the donors acknowledged in this report, the Frist remains a trea- sured community resource, valued for its historic architecture as well as the world-class art, public programs, art activities, and opportunities for fellowship. The mission and vision of the Frist are sustained not only by financial gifts but also by donations of time and talent.

We thank each of you for investing in the quality of life in Nashville by supporting the Frist. Our gratitude extends to trustees, those who serve on councils and committees, sponsors, foundations, government agencies, members, community partners, visitors, and hardworking, loyal staff. For over one hundred years, Tennessee has been known as the Volunteer State because of the role played by volunteer soldiers. That tradition of selflessness extends to community service, and we gratefully acknowledge the many hours of work by our volunteers, who help in myriad ways.

Each year, the Frist Art Museum receives generous support from its major annual fundraiser. The 2019 Frist Gala co-chairs, Susanne Cato and Kathleen Estes, marshaled a team of dedi- cated friends and colleagues to work tirelessly to ensure the financial success of Gala events, including a patron dinner, in conjunction with Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art and A Sporting Vision: The Paul Mellon Collection of British Sporting Art, two exhibitions from the Museum of Fine Arts. We thank all who attend and contribute funds and fun to make these parties unforgettable.

In this report, you will read about the exhibitions and programs the Frist offered members and visitors throughout 2019. Without your help, they would not have been possible. With each story of a path changed, an idea revealed, or a window opened, we rededicate ourselves to providing with a place for visitors to see, learn, and interact with art.

Thank you again for your generosity. We pledge responsible stewardship and our full commit- ment to the mission of bringing great art to Nashville, serving the vision of inspiring people through art to see their world in new ways.

We hope that when you visit the Frist, you find the experience you seek. Please join us as often as you can.

Sincerely,

Susan H. Edwards, PhD Executive Director and CEO

4 5 Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

February 2–May 5, 2019 • Ingram Gallery

Organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Offering more than seventy works by masters such as Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau, and Vincent van Gogh, this broadly appealing exhibition celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon’s extraordinary gift of French 19th- and early 20th-century art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. With its core of Impressionist paint- ings, the collection also comprised masterpieces from every important school of French art, from Romanticism through the School of Paris. These works represent more than 150 years of art and exemplify the Mellons’ personal vision and highly original acquisition strategies, which provide a context for understanding this unique collection.

6 7 A Sporting Vision: The Paul Mellon Collection of British Sporting Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

February 2–May 5, 2019 • Ingram Gallery

Organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

With representative masterpieces of the genre—including works by Sir Francis Grant, John Frederick Herring, Benjamin Marshall, George Morland, and —this exhibition celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon’s gift of British sporting art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and marked an opportunity to view the entire breadth of this out- standing and comprehensive collection. It also proposed a fresh look at sporting art within wider social and artistic contexts, including the scientific and industrial revolutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the transformation of the British countryside, the evolu- tionary history of the horse and other animals, and society’s changing habits and customs.

8 9 Claudio Parmiggiani: Dematerialization

February 2–May 5, 2019 • Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

Organized by the Frist Art Museum

Italian artist Claudio Parmiggiani (b. 1943) resists classification. Though associated with the Arte Povera movement and conceptualism of the 1960s and ’70s, he works somewhere in between. His art evokes uni- versal themes of time, absence, memory, and silence, while drawing on classical references as well as the subtle quietude of paintings by Giorgio Morandi. Parmiggiani’s signature process of delocazione (displacement) was originally inspired by the silhouettes of dust left behind after objects were removed. For more than forty years, Parmiggiani has created his own version of this effect by stoking the flames from controlled combus- tions, filling rooms with smoke and capturing the outlines of objects in the resulting soot. Mirroring the technical process of photograms, these haunting images record the paradoxical presence of objects now absent. Dematerialization was the artist’s first museum exhibition in the .

10 11 Dorothea Lange: Politics of Seeing

March 15–May 27, 2019 Upper-Level Galleries

Organized by the Oakland Museum of California

Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) is recognized as one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, and her insight- ful and compassionate work has exerted a profound influence on the development of modern documentary photography. With hardship and human suffering as a consis- tent theme throughout her career, Lange created arresting portraits with the aim of sparking reform. This was the first exhibition to examine her work through the lens of so- cial and political activism, presenting iconic photographs from the Great Depression, the grim conditions of incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II, and inequity in our judicial system in the 1950s. The exhi- bition encompassed more than 120 objects, including vintage and modern photographs, personal items, and a video.

12 13 Connect/Disconnect: Growth in the “It” City

March 22–August 4, 2019 Conte Community Arts Gallery

Organized by the Frist Art Museum

A community exhibition inspired by a 2017 Tennessean article about how Nashville has been growing at a rate of one hundred peo- ple per day, Connect/Disconnect featured photographs by Davidson County residents of diverse ages and backgrounds, showing how the population boom has affected them and the lives of the people around them. As part of a collaboration between the Frist Art Museum and Nashville Public Library’s Spe- cial Collections Division, many submissions became part of an archive that captures the city’s fabric, culture, and history. Susan Ed- wards, , and Carlton Wilkinson served as jurors for Connect/Disconnect.

14 15 Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection

May 24–September 2, 2019 • Ingram Gallery

Organized by the Vergel Foundation and MondoMostre in col- laboration with the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL)

Jacques and Natasha Gelman were Eastern European refugees who married in Mexico in 1941 and acquired Mexican art from their artist friends. This exhibition presented iconic works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and their contem- poraries, including seven painted self-portraits in which Kahlo vividly asserts her identity.

16 17 Diana Al-Hadid: Sublimations

May 24–September 2, 2019 Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

This exhibition was a partnership between the Frist Art Museum and Cheekwood Estate & Gardens.

This exhibition featured a selection of sculptures and wall reliefs by the Syrian American artist Diana Al-Hadid. Meditations on ruination and renewal, her works contain allusions ranging from archaeological excavations and sacred frescoes, mosaics, or tapestries to female bodies that often appear as if they are melting or dissolving. These shimmering orchestrations of abstract elements, evocative surfaces, and symbolic forms—made from materials such as polymer gypsum, fiberglass, and cardboard—seem to have grown organically, with time’s accumulation and decay assisting the artist’s imagina- tion in producing these works. Yet Al-Hadid’s process of fabrication and spirit of inquiry reveal a highly purpose- ful vision, inspired by a variety of sources, from Arabic literature to depictions of women throughout art history.

18 19 Monsters & Myths: Surrealism and War in the 1930s and 1940s

June 21–September 29, 2019 • Upper-Level Galleries

Organized by The Baltimore Museum of Art and The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

Few artists in the 1930s and 1940s produced images more powerfully disturbing than the Surrealists, who conveyed dark premonitions and unsettling responses to the rise of Hitler, the Spanish Civil War, and World War II. These events profoundly challenged the revolutionary hopes that had guided most Surrealist artists in the 1920s. Drawn primarily from the collections of The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, the exhibition highlighted the brilliance and fertility of the art of this period, which arose amid political and personal turmoil as an effort to engage with psychological forces that propelled contemporary history. As Surrealist scholar Martica Sawin observed, it was part of Surrealism’s project to “explore those areas of the human psyche where the propensity to violence lurked.”

20 21 Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists

September 27, 2019–January 12, 2020 Ingram Gallery

Organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art

This was the first major museum exhibition exclusively devoted to Native women artists from all over the United States and Canada, ranging across time and media. Developed in close cooperation with leading Native artists and historians, the exhibition offered multiple perspectives to enhance understanding of Native art practices. The approximately 115 objects in the exhibition, including textiles, baskets, jewelry, painting, sculpture, photog- raphy, video, and digital art, were organized into sections that reflect why Native women create art. Hearts of Our People not only helped visitors understand the traditional role of Native women artists in serving the cultural, economic, diplomatic, and domestic needs of their communities, but also went beyond the longstanding convention of treating these art- works as unattributed representations of entire cultures. The contemporary works on view, in particular, highlighted the intentionality of the individual artist and demonstrated how the artist was influenced by the preceding gener- ations.

22 23 Murals of North Nashville Now

August 10, 2019–January 20, 2020 • Conte Community Arts Gallery

Organized by the Frist Art Museum

With Nashville’s rapid growth and many changes in recent years, a vibrant street art community has emerged. New murals can be seen on walls across the city, from The Nations to the Gulch to Nolensville Road. Murals found in North Nashville, a historically African American area, stand out not only because they are typically made by artists with ties to the neighborhood (rather than non-locals), but because much of the imagery reveals current social and political issues.

A young generation of artists—Nuveen Barwari, Omari Booker, LeXan- der Bryant, Brandon Donahue, Marlos E’van, Courtney Adair Johnson, Elisheba Israel Mrozik, Norf Art Collective, and XPayne—offered their perspectives on the present position of North Nashville through com- missioned site-specific murals. Subjects reflected the complexities of its history and identity and spoke to persistent problems facing the com- munity such as gun violence, displacement, and incarceration, as well as Norf Art Collective. 24 25 OSGEMEOS: In between

September 27, 2019–January 12, 2020 Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery

Organized by the Frist Art Museum

This exhibition featured an installation by twin brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, the Brazilian graffiti/mural painters/studio artists whose nom de plume is OSGEMEOS (or Os Gemeos), Portuguese for “the twins.” Born in 1974 in São Paulo, the twins started spray painting graffiti in 1987. Their brash cartoonish style blends such wide-ranging influences as hip-hop, New York street graffiti, and Brazilian folklore and contemporary culture. Populated by an array of thin-legged, big-headed yellow characters, their works tell stories of family, social change, and the intersection of old and new in Brazil. Their indoor installations often combine paintings and sculptures with sound elements, as well as objects from Brazilian streets and shops, and architectural elements like doors and windows. The twins report that their imagery comes from dreams that they both have at the same time.

62 63 The 2019 Frist Gala

Drawing from Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for inspiration, Hugh Howser at H Three Events by Hugh + Kate worked tire- lessly to create a magical evening. The museum was transformed into a serene French garden. With crystal chandeliers hanging from its ceiling, and cascading drapes adding to the atmosphere of enchantment, the tent was framed beautifully by trees, with ornate gold mirrors reflecting the scene below. The tables were covered in linens featuring birds calling to each other, and baskets of blue hydrangeas arranged by The Tulip Tree enhanced the lovely setting. 66 67 Art Deco Affair

On August 17, the Frist Art Museum welcomed more than two hundred guests to celebrate all things art deco and support the ongoing care of the museum’s historic 1930s building. At- tendees enjoyed light bites provided by Clean Plate Club while listening to the sounds of DJ Houndstooth. The eve- ning also included mini-gallery tours of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism from the Jacques and Nata- sha Gelman Collection and Monsters & Myths: Surrealism and War in the 1930s and 1940s. At the end of the night, Mexican frozen treats from Las Paletas were served.

For VIPs, the party continued at Dirty Lit- tle Secret, Dream Nashville’s intriguing experiential nightclub. We thank Dream Nashville for partnering with us to make Art Deco Affair even more special for these supporters of the Frist.

Sponsored by Publix Super Markets Charities, Blackbird Media, Dream Nashville, Bright Event Productions, Nashville Scene, Clean Plate Club, Please Be Seated, Las Paletas, and ESa
