From the President

On behalf of the Board and staff of ICF – Happy New Year! With the New Year come resolutions, changes and opportunities. We hope one of your resolutions will be to stay informed about the many ways people like you partner with ICF to enrich the quality of life throughout .

You are receiving @ICF because you are already our partner in building community. That means you have given a gift to one of ICF’s funds such as the Women’s Gift Alliance, the Wood River Women’s Foundation, the John William Jackson Fund or one of our other 550+ funds, or that you are an ICF member, fund advisor, volunteer or grant recipient. Maybe you are more than one of these things, for which are very appreciative! No matter your affiliation, we appreciate that you are part of ICF’s collective philanthropy movement.

We expect 2017 to bring many good things, including surpassing $100 million in grants distributed since our founding nearly 30 years ago. That’s a powerful demonstration of people coming together to support the issues and organizations that they care about and bringing positive changes to communities across our great state.

Today I write in sorrow and awe. ICF’s founder and one of Idaho’s larger-than-life philanthropists, John Fery, passed away on Saturday.

Many local organizations including the Treasure Valley YMCA, Idaho Shakespeare Festival and the Boise Art Museum, benefited from the generosity of John and his wife Dee. At the Idaho Community Foundation, we owe our very existence to him. The story below includes John’s reminiscences of ICF’s earliest days.

I would also like to report that we’re closing the books on 2016 and we had a very successful year, thanks to all of you who are partners in ICF’s mission to improve the quality of life throughout Idaho. Here’s a snapshot of what you have helped us accomplish. John Fery would be proud:

We made an impact in communities across Idaho with grants and scholarships:

We distributed 1,550 grants to nonprofits throughout Idaho (and beyond), which will go to support low- income families, senior citizens, education, art and music programs, animal welfare and much more. We awarded 230 scholarships to help Idaho students reach their educational goals.

We were effective stewards of philanthropy:

Our endowment earned a gross preliminary return of 11 percent on investment for 2016. We established 27 new charitable funds that will support nonprofits throughout Idaho. Of those, 20 were endowed funds which will provide support forever.

We facilitated collective giving:

We are thrilled to have more than 750 members across the state supporting ICF’s work. Every region of Idaho increased its membership revenues over 2015. We are so grateful for your support! See our story below for more details.

I remain honored to be a part of this movement and grateful to people like John Fery who led the way. Thank you all for the role you play.

It’s hard to believe that just one year ago I wrote my first update for @ICF. One of the greatest privileges of being at a new foundation, and in a new place, is that I get to hear new stories of generosity.

At ICF, we are fortunate to have hundreds of these stories. Inspired by their commitment to community and their strong sense of place, our donors have partnered with ICF to accomplish their philanthropic goals, and have helped ICF enrich the quality of life in every corner of the state. You can read some of the stories about these donors who have created funds at ICF through legacy gifts here.

We also have so many people who have made a difference during their lifetimes. Each year we honor ICF’s Friends of the Foundation at our annual luncheons throughout the state. The Friend of the Foundation is ICF’s highest award and is given to the individual, couple, family or group to recognize their exceptional contribution to ICF and to Idaho. The recipients are those who embody our mission to enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho.

This year we will honor:

Jim Kissler and Nicole Kissler of Boise at our luncheon on May 2 John and Karen Rosholt of Twin Falls at our luncheon on May 17 Alan Van Orden of Pocatello at our luncheon on June 6 Bob and Leslee Hoover of Coeur d’Alene at our luncheon on September 13

Details about the May 2 luncheon are below and we’ll keep you posted on the others as well. I hope you will join us at one of more of these events. Stories about people who give are always uplifting, but even after a year here at ICF, I’m still experiencing the “oh wow” moments that help me understand the unique and wonderful qualities of our donors.

ICF is listening!

At ICF we strive to be representative of local communities. We work toward this goal by relying on volunteers from every county as grant reviewers, by ensuring that our Board of Directors represents all regions of Idaho and by encouraging people from all geographic areas and experiences to be members of ICF.

We also are committed to listening to and learning from communities across the state. A hallmark of community foundations is that we are about the community. Listening to our broad base of constituents is critical to our ability to continue that commitment.

We have initiated a Grantee Feedback Survey to ask for feedback from grant applicants and recipients. Research shows that grantmakers who are more connected to their grantees are more likely to provide support in ways that help nonprofits succeed. If you have applied for or received an ICF grant and would like to participate, please click here.

We also have a Communication Survey to hear how you feel about ICF communications, our events and how you support your favorite causes and organizations. This information will let us know what you like and what you think we could improve. Please click here to complete the Communication Survey.

Our preliminary results show that many of ICF’s grantees and supporters appreciate and value their interactions with ICF, and also that some there are opportunities for us to better serve you.

Finally, we mailed proxy ballots to all ICF members to vote for the ICF Board Directors who are up for election. The deadline to return proxies is April 24. If you’re not an ICF member, we invite you to join by clicking here!

Last week, I was absolutely thrilled to see nearly 300 of ICF’s donors, members, past and present board directors and nonprofit partners come together in Boise for our 28th Annual Southwest Idaho Luncheon.

The theme was Understanding Homelessness and it was a great program! Boise Mayor Dave Bieter was our keynote speaker and we had On The Spot Grant presentations from Charitable Assistance to Community’s Homeless (CATCH), the Home Partnership Foundation and The Salvation Army Nampa Corps, which runs the Nampa Community Family Shelter.

We were very proud to present the Friend of the Foundation award to Jim Kissler and Nicole Kissler. The Friend of the Foundation is our most significant award and is given to an individual, a couple or a group to recognize their outstanding achievement in enriching the quality of life throughout Idaho. Jim and his daughter Nicole are longtime supporters of ICF and they are a wonderful example of generational philanthropy.

This event coincided with ICF’s Annual Meeting of Members and Annual Board meeting at which we elected new board members and officers for ICF.

With this transition, we say thank you to ICF’s Board Chair, Bill Berg, for his leadership over the past two years. During Bill’s tenure, ICF experienced a period of great growth. Our assets are nearly $160 million and we broke the $100 million grant distribution mark.

We also have more than 200 Legacy Society members who have included ICF in their estate plans. As an attorney in Sandpoint, Bill helped secure many of these legacy commitments, including a gift of land that ICF will convert to cash to fund the Max & Wilma Owen Memorial Fund.

Bill also led ICF through a national search for a new President and CEO, and I am fortunate to be the one who got to assume this role and to work with Bill during my first year at ICF. Bill’s leadership and vision inspired ICF board directors and staff to begin envisioning ICF’s short- and long-term future and we are excited about our progress.

As a demonstration of our appreciation, ICF has made a grant to the Panhandle Alliance for Education Founders Fund in ICF in recognition of Bill’s leadership. We now welcome Sue Thilo as ICF’s next chair. Sue is from Hayden Lake and has been on the ICF Board since 2011.

She has served on boards for numerous community and statewide organizations, including the North Idaho College Foundation Board, Salvation Army/Kroc Center Advisory Board, Coeur d’Alene Rotary Endowment Foundation Board (Chair), Kootenai Health Foundation Board, Women’s Gift Alliance, past member of the Idaho State Board of Education and many other nonprofit boards in Kootenai County. We look forward to Sue’s guidance as we continue our work to enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho.

ICF Affiliate: Grangeville Community Foundation

The Grangeville Community Foundation (GCF), an ICF community affiliate, has provided more than $20,000 to fund projects in Grangeville since it first began making grants in 2013. Grangeville Community GCF helps support a wide variety of organizations and Foundation founding projects, including Camas Prairie Quilts of Valor to make board members Andrea quilts for service members and veterans, Grangeville Youth Solberg, Jane Spencer, Soccer for equipment, supplies and a storage trailer, and Mary Jahn, John Grangeville Rural Fire Department for training equipment. Bennett and Mary Schmidt.

They partnered with the City of Grangeville and the Grangeville Swim Team to purchase new lane ropes and rope covers for the Grangeville Swimming Pool in 2016.

“We were so proud to be involved with this project,” said Jane Spencer, a founding member of the GCF Board. “It affects hundreds of people young and old and makes our community a better place to live.”

Community affiliates are “mini ICF’s” that establish charitable funds at ICF to support their communities. Affiliates have their own advisory boards and make recommendations on their own grants. Other ICF affiliates include Lemhi Valley Community Foundation in eastern Idaho and Priest River Community Foundation in north Idaho.

GCF grew out of Grangeville Horizons, a grant the community received from 2003-2011. “We saw the impact that a small amount of funding could make in Grangeville and decided to create a permanent endowment with the remaining grant funds,” said Andrea Solberg, a founding member of the GCF Board.

ICF now offers a modified version of its community affiliate program. Cities, counties or regions can establish what’s called a “community fund.” Community funds function much the same way as community affiliates. They have their own advisory boards and make recommendations about grants in their region. Upcoming Deadlines

In the last month, ICF has brought together more than 200 of our donors, members, past and present board directors and nonprofit partners for the ICF Annual Luncheons in Twin Falls and Idaho Falls.

At each event, we had a room filled with people who care about their communities – the donors whose generosity supports the work of nonprofits they care about most and the representatives of organizations who deliver important services. ICF is proud to be the connection between the two.

In Twin Falls, Dr. Evin Fox spoke about the important role of early childhood education. The On The Spot Grant presenters provided examples of the research Dr. Fox spoke about in action, and underscored the importance of family, community and environment in nurturing healthy development and early learning.

In Idaho Falls, Jessica Sotelo spoke about the strategies that help struggling families increase financial and tangible assets (such as savings or a home) in order to improve their lives. The On The Spot Grant presenters talked about the importance of partnership in addressing issues of health care, food insecurity and ensuring basic needs so that individuals and families are able to focus on building their assets.

At ICF, we are proud that our charitable dollars are spread across education, arts and culture, social services, community improvement projects and other areas that are important to our donors and volunteers. We were also pleased to take a closer look at specific issues affecting different regions of our diverse state at our annual events.

We thank all of you for your support of ICF and for helping us enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho!

Last month, we were thrilled to launch the Nonprofit Leadership Summit in partnership with the Idaho Nonprofit Center (INC).

This program emerged from a “what if” discussion between INC Executive Director Amy Little and me when we were both new in our respective positions. We asked how we could work together to help our local nonprofits thrive – how could we accomplish more together?

The result is a program designed to strengthen and support Idaho nonprofits through training in leadership, board development, strategic planning and fiscal management so they can deliver more effective programs and better sustain their operations.

The program is designed for participants to share their strengths and experiences, learn from experts in the field and to provide space for productive discussion between board members and executives. The first session was led by Terry Stokesbary of the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust and focused on building leadership within organizations. Here’s some of what we heard from participants:

“I am leaving with actionable items, not only as a board member, but also to share with my employer, my team and other partnerships.” "Thank you for a wonderful day. GREAT training topic. Leadership and board development is so essential and yet we spend such little time on this. Can I bring my entire Exec committee next time?”

At ICF we recognize that great programs need strong organizations behind them, and we are excited that we can offer more than financial support to local organizations through the Nonprofit Leadership Summit. We look forward to offering this program in north and east Idaho in future years!

Libraries and animals have always been a source of great joy for Lewiston’s Pam Howard. Her estate plans include establishing an endowed fund through ICF that will forever provide support for the public libraries in Nez Perce, Lewis, Clearwater, Idaho and Latah counties and for the Lewis- Clark Animal Shelter.

“During my lifetime, I have had so many advantages, so many opportunities and so many rich experiences,” she says. “I want to pay forward some of what I have been given, and the ICF Legacy Society seems an ideal way to do that.”

She chose ICF as a partner in her estate planning in part because she was familiar with the foundation’s helpful staff. “But more than that, Idaho is where I live, Idaho is the state I love, and I want my legacy to remain in Idaho.”

Always an avid reader, Pam became a librarian by accident. She took a break from her studies at the University of Colorado and got a job at a library on campus. She soon realized that her organizational skills, love of books and willingness to find answers to tough questions were the qualities of a good librarian. She left the job, returned to school and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science.

Her first job in Idaho was as the Culdesac branch librarian in Nez Perce County and she saw firsthand the importance of libraries in rural communities.

“They are a safe place for children to congregate, a provider of free entertainment and a partner with the local schools,” Pam says. She said the libraries she chose as beneficiaries of her fund have limited budgets but “their librarians are very creative in finding ways to expand their services and offerings.”

ICF funds are flexible and can accommodate people like Pam who want to provide support to more than one organization or interest area. That’s how Pam was able to benefit the libraries as well as the animal shelter.

Pam’s love of animals began when she was a young girl. She and her sisters joke that they were raised by the family dog, a collie named Lady.

“My mom was busy taking care of the house and its large yard and garden. She gave us the freedom to explore, knowing that Lady would stay with us and keep us from harm. Lady did her job well, and none of us ever had a serious injury,” Pam recalls.

Her love of animals has lasted her entire life. She currently has two dogs and three cats. “I credit them with helping me age gracefully.”

Registration is now open for Idaho Philanthropy Day and I encourage our grant recipients, members, fund holders and other supporters to attend the event in their area for a half-day of learning, socializing and celebrating philanthropy!

This year’s events will be held in Idaho Falls, Boise and Coeur d’Alene on Nov. 14-16 and will include two workshop sessions, a lunch that includes a multi-generational panel discussion about philanthropy, and an awards ceremony recognizing nonprofits and philanthropists for their good work in our communities.

Idaho Philanthropy Day is part of National Philanthropy Day, which is held every year on Nov. 15. This year’s event is a collaboration between ICF, the Idaho Association of Fundraising Professionals, Idaho Nonprofit Center and Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation. More details are below.

Speaking of events, I’d like to thank all of you who attended one or more of our Annual Luncheons this year! We wrapped up our final event for 2017 in Coeur d’Alene last month.

It was great to see our Friends of the Foundation Bob and Leslee Hoover and hear about their new adventure in Caldwell where Bob is interim president of The College of Idaho while the college conducts a national search for a new president. And our keynote speaker, Philanthropy Northwest CEO Kiran Ahuja, gave a warm, funny address that reminded all of us about the importance of nonprofit work and in being engaged with our communities.

And finally, I’d like to give a quick shout out to our ICF Board Director Brenda Sanford and the leadership at DL Evans Bank! We co-hosted an event with them in Burley last month and appreciated the opportunity to talk about our grantmaking and how we can help generous, community-minded individuals set up charitable endowments.

Best wishes to all of you for a beautiful fall!

At the Idaho Community Foundation, we are in the business of bringing people who care together with the organizations that are making a difference in their communities. So it is only natural that this month we join with the Idaho Nonprofit Center, Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation and Association of Fundraising Professionals Idaho Chapter to celebrate Idaho Philanthropy Day!

National Philanthropy Day has been celebrated every year since November 15, 1986 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first National Philanthropy Day. Here in Idaho, we will recognize the people and organizations that come together to make our communities better by supporting food pantries, arts programs, education and much more.

As a statewide organization, ICF celebrates the uniqueness of each of Idaho’s regions and we recognize that they have their own set of nonprofit organizations, supporters, community leaders and ways to enrich the quality of life throughout Idaho.

We appreciate and thank all of our donors, members and nonprofit partners for your support of ICF and hope you will join us at the Idaho Philanthropy Day event in your region. Details are below.

County Residents “This was a great group of participants,” said ICF President and CEO Karen Shirley Gleason Bilowith. “Having board members and executive directors in the same room really benefited everyone because they could share their successes and learn In Honor of Melissa Nelson from experts and from colleagues about how to deal with struggles they may Idaho Society of CPAs have felt were unique to their organization.”

Dale and Jackie Phillips Amy Little, President and CEO of the Idaho Nonprofit Center, said the idea for the Leadership Summit grew out of the nonprofit center’s sustainability Treva Pline initiative a few years ago, which was designed to help new nonprofits find success. Leah Rourke “We realized we needed something for nonprofits that were out of their start- In Honor of Mark Peterson up phase,” she said. “We wanted to create a cohort of organizations that were Idaho Society of CPAs established and growing to help them move forward.”

Leslie Yoest, Giraffe Laugh board chair, said learning from the other

nonprofits that participated was valuable for her.

“Everyone who participated was willing to share their resources and experiences and make this a true collaboration,” she said. Jessica Ruehrwein, executive director of the Treasure Valley Education Partnership said that even though participants represented organizations that don’t seem connected, they were still able to find common ground.

“There’s a common connectivity because we are all mission driven, and interacting with each other keeps us from getting in the weeds,” she said. “It’s nice to know we’re walking along with others and we’re not alone.”

Anselme Sadiki, executive director of the Children’s Home Society, said he was impressed as he learned more about the work of his nonprofit peers and how everyone’s efforts benefit Boise and the Treasure Valley.

“Boise has an incredible number of nonprofit organizations that are doing an incredible amount of work with limited resources, and they are successful because of the engagement of their board members and of the community as a whole,” he said.

The Leadership Summit was sponsored by the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Wells Fargo and Norco. In the future it will be offered in north Idaho and east Idaho, but a timeline for those sessions hasn’t been set.
