St John’s College, 2005! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! This dissertation is submitted for the degree of! Doctor of Philosophy! !1 ! ! !2 Abstract! ! ! ! ! ! Neither communist, nor fascist, the personalist third way was an original attempt to remedy the malaise of liberal democracies in 1930s Europe. Personalism puts the emphasis on the human person – understood to be an individual in relation to others – as the foundation and aim of society. Yet, because of the impossibility of subjecting the human person to a systematic definition, personalism remains complex and multifaceted, to the extent that it might be best to speak of ‘personalisms’ in the plural. The various personalist movements that emerged in France in the 1930s are little known, and the current historiography in English misrepresents them. ! This dissertation is a study of the various personalist movements based in France in the 1930s, examining their spiritual research and political philosophy through the vantage point of Swiss writer Denis de Rougemont (1906-1985). In Rougemont lies the key to understanding the personalist groupings because he was the only thinker to remain active in the two foremost movements (Ordre Nouveau and Esprit) throughout the 1930s. The personalism of Ordre Nouveau was the most original, in both senses of the term. It deserves particular attention as an important political philosophy and an attempt to justify political and economic federalism in 1930s Europe. Whilst an Ordre Nouveau activist, Rougemont can be looked upon as the mediator and federator of personalisms in the 1930s. ! However, Rougemont’s particular contribution to personalist thought was more spiritual and theological than political or economic.

Wallflowers: Tapestry, Painting, and the Nabis in Fin-de-siècle France by Cindy Kang A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Institute of Fine Arts New York University May 2014 ———————————— Linda Nochlin © Cindy Kang All Rights Reserved, 2014 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible without the support of many individuals and institutions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Wellesley College funded a wonderfully prolific year of research and travel in Europe, during which I was based in Paris. The bulk of my archival work, as well as study of objects in museum galleries and store rooms, was conducted during this seminal year. The Getty Research Institute hosted me for another crucial year in which I wrote the majority of this dissertation. I am indebted to the GRI for providing me with the invaluable “room of one’s own” to gather my thoughts and write in such a tranquil setting. I am even more grateful, however, for its generous support and accommodation of a new working mother; their efforts count as nothing short of heroic in this country. The Institute of Fine Arts, NYU also supported this project in its beginning stages and I would especially like to thank my committee for their unflagging encouragement and confidence in me: my advisor, Linda Nochlin, remained an enthusiastic reader and advocate of this project from its conception to its completion; Robert Lubar was an equally supportive mentor and intellectual guide; and Thomas Crow, who reminded me to maintain balance in my life amidst the rigor of working on a dissertation.

  • Yvonne Brunhammer Former Director of the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
The Decorative Arts Library of Yvonne Brunhammer former Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris 3534 titles in circa 3950 volumes The Yvonne Brunhammer Library The Brunhammer Library is a major resource for the study of design and the decorative arts, and allied fields, from the nineteenth century to the present day. Its formidable range and depth amply reflects Ms. Brunhammer's distinction as one of the leading scholars in the world in these areas. Focusing above all on Art Nouveau, on Art Déco, and on Modern design from the interwar period to the start of the twenty-first century, it covers all aspects of the decorative arts, including furniture, glass, ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, textiles, rugs, and related crafts; as well as fashion and costume design, the graphic arts, including posters and advertising design; and the design of the built environment, including architecture and architectural design, interior design, industrial design and product design. The Brunhammer Library encompasses the full extent of the period, covering not only French, Western European, and American design, but also Japanese, Scandinavian, and Eastern European. It extends well into the larger scope of the performing arts, sculpture, and the history of the avant-garde in the fine arts, as these bear on the central areas of the collection. Incidental material on earlier epochs of art history, from Gothic to Neoclassical, is included as well. Without question the doyenne of French scholars of the decorative arts, Yvonne Brunhammer had a long and distinguished career, as an immensely productive scholar and curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for more than four decades.
