Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin eri uudistusmuotojen ominaisuudet ja erot sekä arvioitiin niiden vaatimia kustannuksia. Työssä myös selvitettiin videopelien uudistamisen eroa verrattuna muun median, kuten elokuvien, uudistamiseen. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin videopeliuudistusten suosion nousuun vaikuttaneita tekijöitä. Työssä selvitettiin myös videopelien uudistamisesta syntyneitä sivuilmiöitä ja niiden vaikutuksia. Työssä tutkittiin myös videopelin uudistamiseen liittyviä työvaiheita ja haasteita. Tutkimuksen tuloksena todettiin haasteiden koostuvan niin teknisistä kuin suunnitelmallisista haasteista. Teoriaosuudessa myös tutkittiin eri uudistamistapojen valintaperusteita uudessa projektissa sekä annettiin käytännön esimerkkejä videopelin uudistamisprojekteista. Aiheen harvinaisuuden takia tutkimuslähteet olivat pääosin internetlähteitä, kuten artikkeleita ja uutisia. Opinnäytetyön käytännönosuuden toimeksianto oli Nerdic Gamesin vanhan videopelin uudistaminen nykyaikaisille mobiililaitteille käyttäen Unity-pelimoottoria. Starting with the decline of hybrid devices like the Commodore 64, the paper traces the way in which notions of convergence and divergence have infl uenced the console gaming market. Special attention is given to the convergence strategies employed by key players such as Sega, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, and the success or failure of these strategies is evaluated.
