You totally found it.” 121 vii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the digital pedagogy and political genealogy of women of color feminist Tumblr, a networked community of antiracist users on the social media platform Tumblr. I show how these users’ free collection and distribution of social justice educational materials online constitutes a digital feminist of color pedagogy, one which challenges entrenched hierarchies of knowledge-production and circulation. Using textual and discursive analysis as well as social media-specific qualitative methods, I argue that women of color feminist Tumblr harnesses social media as an alternative feminist classroom space—one which challenges the presumed location of feminist and ethnic studies as they have come to be incorporated into the neoliberal multicultural university (Ferguson) and which reimagines their “theoretical subject” (Alarcón) as online users who lack institutional access to these fields’ emancipatory knowledge. Further, I show how the very ethics of this online feminist classroom space are derived from the longer history of women of color feminist praxis and the theorization of “women of color” as a cross-racial, coalitional feminist identity. Building upon the work of Norma Alarcón, Chela Sandoval, and Analouise Keating, who argue that Third World feminism’s “most potentially transformational theories” were largely “bypassed and ignored” (Keating) by mainstream feminist scholarship, my dissertation intervenes by analyzing Third World feminism’s “digital afterlife” (Adair and Nakamura) on social media. By centering viii questions of race, class, gender, and sexuality within the digital humanities, I join emergent critiques of the digital humanities (Bailey, Cong-Huyen, Lothian, and Phillips 2016) and show how ordinary users transform social media platforms into powerful tools of feminist (re)education. ix INTRODUCTION In 2007, my proto-inner-angry-feminist was desperate for validation. As early as middle and high school, I had reached my tipping point over the subtle hypocrisy of “girls don’t behave that way” and other microaggressions. After repeated exposures to the historical women’s movement in history class, I eventually googled it and ran head-first into the feminist blogosphere. As if unlocking the feminist heavens, I hungrily consumed answers and pursued hyperlink trails — and within the year, I was a brand new, 16-year old feminist. My second epiphany came at the beginning of graduate school, when I found the feminist of color Tumblr- sphere, which gave me words, images, and histories that I had never known before. The transformative effect of these digital feminist spaces on my life got me interested in the effect they were having on the larger online culture. If the blogosphere had primarily consisted of older, more seasoned feminists, Tumblr seemed to be run largely by people my age. How were we all finding this feminist information and content? What was moving us to share it? And what special magic did this practice of reblogging and resharing — like passing around zines between girlfriends — conjure that was unique to Tumblr? Why were people like Gloria Anzaldúa and Audre Lorde, and books like This Bridge Called My Back, so popular online? And what did this all have to do with women of color feminism? 1 This dissertation analyzes women of color feminist Tumblr as a networked learning community.

    MICRO-BLOGGING AND PERFORMANCE APPS AND SITES Instagram lets users snap, edit, and share photos and 15-second videos, either publicly or with a private network of followers. It unites the most popular features of social media sites: sharing, seeing, and commenting on photos. It also lets you apply fun filters and effects to your photos, making them look high-quality and artistic. What parents need to know • Teens are on the lookout for "likes." Similar to the way they use Facebook, teens may measure the "success" of their photos -- even their self-worth -- by the number of likes or comments they receive. Posting a photo or video can be problematic if teens are posting to validate their popularity. • Public photos are the default. Photos and videos shared on Instagram are public unless privacy settings are adjusted. Hashtags and location information can make photos even more visible to communities beyond a teen's followers if his or her account is public. • Private messaging is now an option. Instagram Direct allows users to send "private messages" to up to 15 mutual friends. These pictures don't show up on their public feeds. Although there's nothing wrong with group chats, kids may be more likely to share inappropriate stuff with their inner circles. Tumblr is like a cross between a blog and Twitter: It's a streaming scrapbook of text, photos, and/or videos and audio clips. Users create and follow short blogs, or "tumblogs," that can be seen by anyone online (if made public). Many teens have tumblogs for personal use: sharing photos, videos, musings, and things they find funny with their friends.

    BUILDING RELATEDNESS THROUGH HASHTAGS: SOCIAL INFLUENCE AND MOTIVATION WITHIN SOCIAL MEDIA-BASED ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS by LUCAS JOHN JENSEN (Under the Direction of Lloyd Rieber) ABSTRACT With the rise of online education, instructors are searching for ways to motivate students to engage in meaningful discussions with one another online and build a sense of community in the digital classroom. This study explores how student motivation is affected when social media tools are used as a substitute for traditional online discussion forums hosted in Learning Management Systems. The main research question for this study was as follows: What factors influence student motivation in a hashtag-based discussion forum? To investigate this question, the following subquestions guided the research: a. How do participants engage in the hashtag discussion assignment? b. What motivational and social influence factors affect participants' activity when they post to the Twitter hashtag? c. How do previous experience with and attitudes toward social media and online discussion forums affect participant motivation in the hashtag-based discussion forum? Drawing on the motivational theories of Self-Determination Theory and Social Influence Theory, as well as the concept of Personal Learning Environments, it was expected that online learners would be more motivated to participate in online discussions if they felt a sense of autonomy over the discussion, and if the discussion took place in an environment similar to the social media environment they experience in their personal lives. Participants in the course were undergraduate students in an educational technology course at a large Southeastern public university. Surveys were administered at the beginning and end of the semester to determine the participants’ patterns of technology and social media usage, attitudes toward social media and online discussion forums, and to determine motivation levels and social influence factors.

WYNTON† ABSTRACT In recent years there has been intense public pressure to enact increasingly restrictive and intrusive sex offender laws. The regulation of sex offenders has now moved online, where a growing amount of protected expression and activity occurs. The latest trend in sex offender policy has been the passage of state laws prohibiting sex offenders from visiting social networking sites, such as Myspace or Facebook. The use of these websites implicates the First Amendment right of expressive association. Broad social-networking-site bans threaten the First Amendment expressive association rights of sex offenders, who do not lose all of their constitutional rights by virtue of their conviction. Although social-networking-site bans are politically attractive on the surface, such prohibitions are fundamentally flawed because they are predicated on a number of widespread misconceptions about sex offenses and sex offender behavior. These misconceptions include the beliefs that all registered sex offenders are violent sexual predators who have extremely high recidivism rates and that Internet predators are increasing the incidence of sex crimes against minors.     Label Me Latina/o Summer 2014 Volume IV 1 Multiple Hybridities: Jíbaros and Diaspora in Esmeralda Santiago’s When I Was Puerto Rican By Lorna L. Pérez Esmeralda Santiago's first memoir When I Was Puerto Rican, published in 1994, chronicles the childhood and relocation of Santiago and her family from Puerto Rico to New York City. The memoir—the vast majority of which takes place in Puerto Rico— charts the ways that Santiago becomes a hybrid, an identity that she represents as being created in the belly of the plane that takes her family from Puerto Rico to the United States. While the trauma of relocation that Santiago articulates is profound, the hybridity that permeates this memoir is more reflective of the changes that marked mid-twentieth century life in Puerto Rico than it is of the trauma of relocation. Though the relocation in the memoir is certainly a traumatic experience, it is not the site of hybridity in the text, but is rather its culmination. Santiago symbolically represents multiple modes of hybridity in the memoir, including the hybridity implied by the title of the text, which speaks to the ways that Puerto Rican life is being drastically reconfigured in the years from 1950-1970. Reading the text in light of the multiple hybrid modes that Santiago employs points to an anxiety that lies in the heart of the current debates about Puerto Rican identity: what does it mean to be Puerto Rican and how do we represent a hybridity that is created through the borderland state that is the Commonwealth? The ambiguity that marked and continues to mark the Commonwealth status of Puerto Rico creates within Santiago’s text a painful ambivalence, wherein the articulation of this identity manifests a borderlands subjectivity that is born from the legal ambiguity of the Commonwealth.
