Twitter, MySpace and Facebook Demystified - by Ted Janusz Q: I hear people talking about Web sites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. What are they? And, even more importantly, should I be using them to promote oral implantology? First, you are not alone. A recent survey showed that 70 percent of American adults did not know enough about Twitter to even have an opinion. Tools like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are components of something else you may have heard people talking about: Web 2.0 , a popular term for Internet applications in which the users are actively engaged in creating and distributing Web content. Web 1.0 probably consisted of the Web sites you saw back in the late 90s, which were nothing more than fancy electronic brochures. Web 1.5 would have been something like Amazon or eBay, sites on which one could buy, sell and leave reviews. What Web 3.0 will look like is anybody's guess! Let's look specifically at the three applications that you mentioned. Tweet, Tweet Twitter - "Twitter is like text messaging, only you can also do it from the Web," says Dan Tynan, the author of the Tynan on Technology blog. "Instead of sending a message to just one person, you can send it to thousands of people at once. You can choose to follow anyone's update (called "tweets") simply by clicking the Follow button on their profile, or vice-versa. MICRO-BLOGGING AND PERFORMANCE APPS AND SITES Instagram lets users snap, edit, and share photos and 15-second videos, either publicly or with a private network of followers. It unites the most popular features of social media sites: sharing, seeing, and commenting on photos. It also lets you apply fun filters and effects to your photos, making them look high-quality and artistic. What parents need to know • Teens are on the lookout for "likes." Similar to the way they use Facebook, teens may measure the "success" of their photos -- even their self-worth -- by the number of likes or comments they receive. Posting a photo or video can be problematic if teens are posting to validate their popularity. • Public photos are the default. Photos and videos shared on Instagram are public unless privacy settings are adjusted. Hashtags and location information can make photos even more visible to communities beyond a teen's followers if his or her account is public. • Private messaging is now an option. Instagram Direct allows users to send "private messages" to up to 15 mutual friends. These pictures don't show up on their public feeds. Although there's nothing wrong with group chats, kids may be more likely to share inappropriate stuff with their inner circles. BUILDING RELATEDNESS THROUGH HASHTAGS: SOCIAL INFLUENCE AND MOTIVATION WITHIN SOCIAL MEDIA-BASED ONLINE DISCUSSION FORUMS by LUCAS JOHN JENSEN (Under the Direction of Lloyd Rieber) ABSTRACT With the rise of online education, instructors are searching for ways to motivate students to engage in meaningful discussions with one another online and build a sense of community in the digital classroom. This study explores how student motivation is affected when social media tools are used as a substitute for traditional online discussion forums hosted in Learning Management Systems. The main research question for this study was as follows: What factors influence student motivation in a hashtag-based discussion forum? To investigate this question, the following subquestions guided the research: a. How do participants engage in the hashtag discussion assignment? b. What motivational and social influence factors affect participants' activity when they post to the Twitter hashtag? c. How do previous experience with and attitudes toward social media and online discussion forums affect participant motivation in the hashtag-based discussion forum? Drawing on the motivational theories of Self-Determination Theory and Social Influence Theory, as well as the concept of Personal Learning Environments, it was expected that online learners would be more motivated to participate in online discussions if they felt a sense of autonomy over the discussion, and if the discussion took place in an environment similar to the social media environment they experience in their personal lives. Participants in the course were undergraduate students in an educational technology course at a large Southeastern public university. Surveys were administered at the beginning and end of the semester to determine the participants’ patterns of technology and social media usage, attitudes toward social media and online discussion forums, and to determine motivation levels and social influence factors. -

Internet Safety: A Parent’s Guide NEISD SHAC 2014 Health Education Subcommittee With the invention of the World Wide Web, or internet, have come new challenges for parents, in the world wide world of keeping our children safe and protected from harm. This presentation is brought to you by the Health Education subcommittee of the North East ISD School Health Advisory Council 2014. For help with terms found in this powerpoint, please consult the script that accompanies this presentation for further information. The Pew Research Center tells us that 95% of our young people, ages 12-17, have the ability or access to go online. As of September 2012, 81% of these online teens use social networking sites, which is up from only 55% in 2006. With such a high percentage of online usage, it is important for our youth to stay safe and be responsible users of the internet. Many teens figure out privacy issues on their own, but recent statistics show that 70% of teens have actually asked for advice on how to keep their usage private. 42% of these teens have asked friends or peers for advice, while 41% have asked parents and 37% have asked siblings or cousins. Girls are more likely to seek advice than boys. As a parent, it is important that we either have some knowledge about what our children are asking, or that we know where to get that knowledge, in order to guide them down a safe path. Our children need to understand that their online interactions may affect them, not only in their present, but also in their future, whether that is in the context of their privacy, their reputation, or even their physical safety. -
