Social Networking: MySpace and

Signing Up for MySpace

1. Go to http://www.MySpace.com.

2. Click on the SIGN UP! Button located in the Member Login area.

3. On the page that follows, fill in the required information to create a MySpace membership.

Note: On this page you will also find options for creating a Band/Musician, Comedian, or Filmmaker MySpace page. Each choice will require different information to be filled in.

4. Once all of the information on the sign up form is completed, click the Sign Up button at the bottom of the page.

5. The next page that appears will allow you to upload a photo, so that other MySpace members can see who you are. Click the Browse button to navigate to an image on your computer that you would like to upload. If you do not have a photo at this time, you can skip this and upload a photo later.

6. Once you have chosen a photo, click the Upload button.

7. At this time you can invite friends to your new MySpace page if you have their email addresses. In the To: field located in the Invite Friends section, you can enter email addresses for up to 10 friends you would like to invite. Other friends may be added later.

8. Once you have entered email addresses, click the Send Invitation button. This will send an email to your friends inviting them to your MySpace page.

9. You have successfully signed up for MySpace!

Signing Up for Facebook

1. Go to http://www.facebook.com.

2. Fill in your name, email, , and birthday information in the Sign up for Facebook area located on the right side of the browser window.

3. Click on the Sign Up Button.

4. A Security Check window will appear. Enter both words in the field provided and then click the Sign Up button again.

5. Facebook will send a confirmation email to your email account. Sign into your email and click on the confirmation link in order to confirm your email account. Once your email is confirmed, you can log in to Facebook using the email address and password you chose.

6. You have successfully signed up for Facebook!

Your MySpace Profile

In order for those who visit your MySpace page to know who you are, or even to give your friends information about yourself that they may not already know, filling out your profile can be helpful.

1. Once you have logged into MySpace and are on your homepage, you will notice two very important links on the top left of the page. One is a link to Pick your MySpace URL and the other is a link to [Edit Profile]. Click on the link next to Pick your MySpace URL to choose a

URL for your MySpace page. This is important. Choosing a URL that reflects who you are and that will be easy for people to remember is a good idea. Your MySpace page will always have this URL until you delete it. All URLs for MySpace pages begin with http://www.myspace.com and end with your choice of words.

2. Fill in the field for you URL twice and click the Submit button. You can use your name, a nickname, or a username that you use on other sites to identify yourself.

3. Once you have chosen your URL, return to your MySpace homegpage and click on the [Edit Profile] link.

4. In the page that appears next, you fill in information about yourself. The information begins with a Headline that you can have show on your page. Fill in what you would like. Nothing is mandatory and you can share as much or as little information as you would like. Notice the other options listed in the links across the top of this page, including Interests & Personality, Name, Basic Info, Background & Lifestyle, Schools, Companies, Networking, and Song & Video. Many of these sections can be filled in with text, but many also accept HTML code.

5. One of the most important sections when editing your profile is the About Me section [located under “Interests & Personality”]. For those who are proficient in CSS design, code can be place in this area that affects the look and arrangement of your entire MySpace page. For those who are not proficient in CSS, there are many websites that offer code for different page styles that you can copy and paste into your About Me section and then edit to your liking. Search for “MySpace Layouts” on to find many options you can use.

6. Once you have added the information you’d like to see in your profile, click the Save All Changes button.

7. In the top right of the page, click on the View My Profile link to see what your page looks like to other MySpace users.

Your Facebook Profile

In order for those who visit your Facebook page to know who you are, or even to give your friends information about yourself that they may not already know, filling out your profile can be helpful.

1. Once you have logged into Facebook and are on your homepage, click the edit link next to Profile at the top of the page.

2. Fill in the information that you would like to share with friends on your Facebook page. You will find more information to share in each of the tabs across the top of the page, including a picture that represents you on Facebook.

3. Once you have filled in all the information you would like to share on your profile, click the Save Changes button at the bottom.

Finding and Adding Friends: MySpace

Although you had the option to add friends to your MySpace account during the sign up process, you may want to search for new friends once your account is made or once you have had a chance to update your profile information or add some style to your profile. The following section will show you how to find friends on MySpace.

1. Once you are logged into MySpace, place your cursor over the Friends button located at the top of the page. A drop down menu will appear. Click on the Find Friends option.

2. There are several ways to locate friends on the page that appears. In the first area, titled Find a Friend, select the radio button for All, Name, Display Name, or Email to locate a friend by any of these criteria. Enter your search words into the field provided and click the Find button. You may also find people with similar interests or similar career interests on this page.

3. You will receive a list of MySpace users based on your search criteria. Once you have identified a friend you would like to add on MySpace, click on their name or MySpace URL to navigate to their profile.

4. Each page will be styled differently, but most all pages will contain a button to Add to Friends, usually on the left side of the page, underneath the profile picture. Click on this button and confirm to add your friend to your MySpace page.

5. Some users will have settings that allow you to add them automatically as a friend. You will find that some users have adjusted their settings so that they must approve your friendship on MySpace before you can add them.

Finding and Adding Friends: Facebook

You may want to search for new friends once your Facebook account is made or once you have had a chance to update your profile information or add some style to your profile. The following section will show you how to find friends on Facebook.

1. At the top of the page, click on the small arrow on the right side of the Friends button. A drop down menu will appear. Click on the Find Friends option at the bottom of the menu.

2. There are several ways to locate friends on the page that appears. In the first section, you can enter your email address to have Facebook look through your address book and locate email addresses attached to accounts on Facebook. Enter your email address and password, then click the Find Friends button to use this option.

3. At the bottom of the page, you will see options for searching for friends with specific email addresses, or by searching your AIM and Windows Live contacts. You can also search for friends in specific networks on Facebook. Networks are many times based on city, workplace, school, or region.

[Note: To add yourself to a Network, click on the account link from the top right of the page, click the Networks tab, then enter a city, workplace, school, or region in the field provided and click the Join Network button.]

4. You will receive a list of Facebook users based on your search criteria. Once you have identified a friend you would like to add on Facebook, click on the Add as Friend link located to the right of the friend’s name and image. A message will be sent to that friend, with a request to be added. Once your request is approved, your friend will appear in your friend’s list on Facebook.

Privacy on MySpace

1. MySpace offers some basic privacy features. Overall settings for your privacy are made by clicking on the My Account link at the top right of the page.

2. Choose the Privacy option on the page that appears. Here you have the option to allow people to see when you are online on MySpace, show your birthdate to everyone or just your friends, set your profile to be visible to everyone or only to friends, allow your photos to be shared and emailed, or block specific users on MySpace.

3. Once you have made the selections you would like, click the Save All Changes button.

Privacy on Facebook

4. Facebook also allows you the ability to screen who sees particular information and photos that you place on your page. Overall settings for your privacy are made by clicking on the privacy link at the top right of the page.

5. From the privacy page, you can edit who [on your friends list and outside of your friends list] is able to see items in your profile, who can search for you on Facebook, what are published to your profile in the “mini-feed”, and what information is available to applications you use within Facebook. You may also block specific Facebook users on this page.

6. To make more detailed information available or not available to specific people on your friends list, you can create “Lists”. Lists are groups of friends you create. You then define what items on your profile that particular list of people can see. To create a new list click the Friends link at the top of the page, then click the Make a New List button on the right side of the page.

7. Name your list in the area provided. [To change the name of a list once you have added it, click the edit link next to the list name.]

8. Select your new list on the left, then begin to type in a friend’s name in the area provided. Your friend’s name will appear below where you are typing. Click on their name to add them to the new list.

9. Once you have added all of the friends you would like to a list, you can send a message to everyone on list by clicking the Message this list link at the bottom of the page. You may also delete a list here by clicking the Delete this list link. This does NOT delete the friends on the list, only the list itself.

10. Once you have lists created, you can use them in any of the privacy areas on Facebook. You can block a specific list from seeing certain information in your profile, certain albums of photos, and more. When you add a new friend to Facebook, you have the option of immediately adding them to a specific list.
