Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Maid Of Orleans Hintergründe von S. Radic Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc) ist ein Lied der britischen Synthie-Pop-Band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (kurz „OMD“) aus dem Jahre 1982. Es war nach Souvenir und Joan of Arc die dritte Single-Auskopplung aus dem Studio-Album Architecture & Morality. Um Verwechselungen mit der Single Joan of Arc zu vermeiden, wählten OMD den Titel Maid of Orleans. Es ist im deutschsprachigen Raum die bis heute erfolgreichste Single der Band. Architecture & Morality ist das dritte Studio- album der britischen Pop-Band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Es wurde im und Paul Humphreys eine der besten Elektropop-Bands November 1981 veröf- der 80er Jahre heranreifen würde. 18 Hits später zieht fentlicht. das Duo aus Liverpool Bilanz, und die Songs funkeln wie eh und je: die vornehme "Maid Of Orleans" ebenso wie die stürmischen "Tesla Girls". Am meisten fällt in dieser hochkarätigen Umgebung die letzte Single "Dreaming" ab - doch zum Trost gibt's auf CD vier Hintergrund. Der Text wurde von Andy McCluskey Stücke mehr, darunter "We Love You" und "La Femme geschrieben und handelt von der französischen Accident" im vorzüglichen Maxi-Mix. Nationalheldin Jeanne d’Arc. Ursprünglich wurde das © Stereoplay Lied zum 550. Todestag von Jeanne d’Arc, den 30. Mai 1981, geschrieben. Here, the noise of the traffic recedes and the street’s charms surge subtly into focus: fashion boutiques and indie cafés tucked into the ground floors of 19th Century Altbauten, the elegantly run-down Kino Babylon and the dark and seductive cocktail bar Würgeengel, the “exterminating angel”, a name borrowed from a surrealist film by luis Buñuel. It all looked very different in the 80s of course, when the Berlin Wall stood just under a kilometre away and the façades of these houses – now expensively renovated and worth a pretty penny – were still pockmarked by World War Two bulletholes. Mostly devoid of baths, the interiors heated by coal, their inhabitants – mostly Turkish immigrants – shivered and shuffled their way through the Berlin winter. 12 13 It was during this pre-Wende milieu that a tall, skinny and largely unknown Australian musician named Nicholas Edward Cave moved into no. 11. Aside from brief spells in apartments on naumannstraße (Schöneberg), yorckstraße, and nearby Oranienstraße, Cave spent the bulk of his seven on-and-off years in Berlin living in a tiny apartment alongside filmmaker and musician Christoph Dreher, founder of local outfit Die Haut. It was in this house that Cave wrote the lyrics and music for several Birthday Party and Bad Seeds albums, penned his debut novel (And The Ass Saw The Angel) and wielded a sizeable influence over Kreuzberg’s burgeoning post-punk scene. -

It is hard to tell whether the ramshackle stage is inside or outside but it appears to be set up against a wall made of corrugated metal. All else is black. The camera cuts to a close-up of the curtains, which are parted to reveal a pale young man with crow’s nest hair wearing a sequined tuxedo and a skewed bow tie. The man holds a lit cigarette and behind him, overseeing proceedings, is a large statue of the Virgin Mary. As the man with the crow’s nest hair walks fully through the arch he opens his mouth and sings the words ‘As the snow flies, on a cold and grey Chicago morn another little baby child is born…’. The song continues with the singer alternately shuffling as if embarrassed by the attention of the camera and then holding his arms aloft in declamation or fixing the viewer with a steely gaze. -
