  • Running Head: AMERICAN CHILDREN's TV & FOREIGNERS 1
Running head: AMERICAN CHILDREN’S TV & FOREIGNERS 1 Representations of Non-American “Foreigners” in American Children’s Television Meryl Alper University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Presented at ICA 2011 Boston, MA Top Student Paper Children, Adolescents, and the Media Division Running head: AMERICAN CHILDREN’S TV & FOREIGNERS 2 Abstract This study expands upon the discussion of diversity in American children’s television to include depictions of non-American foreigners. This project evaluated 53 episodes of the children’s television programs highest rated among American children ages 6-11 during the 2004-2005 season on broadcast and cable television. Quantitatively, there were 21 foreign characters among the 282 characters identified in the sample. Fourteen percent of foreign characters were parodies of famous people. In terms of personality traits, foreign characters were more bad, aggressive, and uncultured than non-foreign characters. While 84% of non-foreign characters were in the opening credits or were primary characters, only 52% of foreign characters had leading roles. Qualitatively, two distinct themes emerge: parodies of Central and Eastern Europeans and the negative framing of foreign children and exchange students. The results suggest that American children’s television is not preparing children for citizenship in a global society by presenting narrow and negative depictions of foreigners. Keywords: television characters, foreigners, children’s television, American television Running head: AMERICAN CHILDREN’S TV & FOREIGNERS 3 Representations of Non-American Foreigners in American Children’s Television Mass media have the potential to shape a more informed citizenry, and in turn, to strengthen local, national, and global communities.

  • The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: a Survey and Analysis
The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: A Survey and Analysis STEPHEN E. TABACHNICK University of Memphis OWING TO A LARGE NUMBER of excellent adaptations, it is now possible to read and to teach a good deal ot the Transition period litera- ture with the aid of graphic, or comic book, novels. The graphic novei is an extended comic book, written by adults for adults, which treats important content in a serious artistic way and makes use of high- quality paper and production techniques not available to the creators of the Sunday comics and traditional comic books. This flourishing new genre can be traced to Belgian artist Frans Masereel's wordless wood- cut novel. Passionate Journey (1919), but the form really took off in the 1960s and 1970s when creators in a number of countries began to employ both words and pictures. Despite the fictional implication of graphic "novel," the genre does not limit itself to fiction and includes numerous works of autobiography, biography, travel, history, reportage and even poetry, including a brilliant parody of T. S. Eliot's Waste Land by Martin Rowson (New York: Harper and Row, 1990) which perfectly captures the spirit of the original. However, most of the adaptations of 1880-1920 British literature that have been published to date (and of which I am aware) have been limited to fiction, and because of space considerations, only some of them can be examined bere. In addition to works now in print, I will include a few out-of-print graphic novel adap- tations of 1880-1920 literature hecause they are particularly interest- ing and hopefully may return to print one day, since graphic novels, like traditional comics, go in and out of print with alarming frequency.

  • The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals By
Comics Aren’t Just For Fun Anymore: The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals by David Recine A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in TESOL _________________________________________ Adviser Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2013 Comics, in the form of comic strips, comic books, and single panel cartoons are ubiquitous in classroom materials for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While comics material is widely accepted as a teaching aid in TESOL, there is relatively little research into why comics are popular as a teaching instrument and how the effectiveness of comics can be maximized in TESOL. This thesis is designed to bridge the gap between conventional wisdom on the use of comics in ESL/EFL instruction and research related to visual aids in learning and language acquisition. The hidden science behind comics use in TESOL is examined to reveal the nature of comics, the psychological impact of the medium on learners, the qualities that make some comics more educational than others, and the most empirically sound ways to use comics in education. The definition of the comics medium itself is explored; characterizations of comics created by TESOL professionals, comic scholars, and psychologists are indexed and analyzed. This definition is followed by a look at the current role of comics in society at large, the teaching community in general, and TESOL specifically. From there, this paper explores the psycholinguistic concepts of construction of meaning and the language faculty.

  • Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I Want To
Sandman, Aesthetics and Canonisation Today I want to examine the ways in which Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has used narrative, format and aesthetic to move ever closer to the notion of the literary text. Particularly going to consider how it exploits the author function and enacts the struggle for cultural worth that comics seem consistently engaged in. Sandman is an epic series rewriting a golden-age superhero into an immortal deity. It is best remembered for its mythological content and literary references, and these elements have allowed it to claim its place as a canonised graphic novel (despite not actually being a singular GN but a maxi-series across multiple trade paperbacks!). Neil Gaiman’s authorship and authority dominate the text and epitomise Michel Foucault’s author function. But Sandman also draws heavily on mixed media and artistic variation and these aspects are less often discussed. Far from supporting a singular author function, Sandman’s visual style is multiple and varied. But despite this, in paratexts the artistic contributions are frequently subsumed into Gaiman’s authorship. However, a closer reading demonstrates that in fact this artistic variety destabilises clear-cut authorship and enacts the particular status struggles of comics as a collaborative medium struggling against the graphic novel branding. Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.
