Brief-Biography of Bhimarao Ramji Ambedkar

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on the 14th April, 1891 at Mhow (Army Headquarter of War) in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. His father, Ramjirao was a Subedar in the army. His grandfather, Maloji was also in military service. His father got retirement from the military service in 1891 with a pension of rupees fifty per month and left Mhow. Ambedkar's father had fourteen children and Ambedkar was the youngest one. Bhimabai was the mother of Bhimrao, who died in 1896. His aunt Mirabai took care of him and filled the gap of mother. His father was an admirer of Mahatma Phooley and Sufi Sant Kabir. After attaining the age of five, Bhimrao was sent to Maratha School in Depoli. His father got re-employment at Depoli from where he was transfered to Satara. In the year 1900 Bhimrao got admission in Govt. High School, Satara. His school name was Bhimrao Ramji Ambavadekar. Bhimrao too Ambedkar title from his teacher, whose name was Ambedkar. In 1904, his father's service was terminated. He shifted to Bombay. Ambedkar was in the fourth standard at that time. He took admission in Elphinston Government High School, Bombay. Ambedkar got married to Ramabai, when he was fourteen years old and was studying in the fifth standard. In 1907, he passed his Matriculation examination. At that time a congratiulatory meeting was arranged by the leaders of Satya Shodhak Movement. They presented him a book on the life of Gautama Buddha. Ambedkar impressed Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda, who awarded him a scholarship of rupees twentyfive per month. In 1912, his son Yashwant was born. Ambedkar passed his B.A. Examination in 1913. On the 2nd February, 1913 his father expired. It was a major shock to Ambedkar, as his father had sacrificed a lot to provide him with education and had to incur debts. ( xii )

On the 4th June, 1913, a service agreement between Ambedkar and Maharaja Sayajirao was signed with the stipulation that he would serve the Baroda State after his study. In the third week of July, 1913, he left India and joined Columbia University, U.S.A. with the Gaekwad scholarship. He was the first Mahar untouchable to study in a foreign University. He was very studious. It is said, he used to study sixteen hours a day. In June, 1915 Ambedkar obtained his M.A. degree on his thesis entitled 'Ancient Indian Commerce'. In May, 1916 he presented a paper on 'The Castes in India, Thier Mechanism, Genesis and Develop- ment' in the Anthropology seminar of Golden Weiser. According to him endogamy is the essence of castes. In June, 1916 he submitted his thesis for the degree of Ph.D., entitled 'National Divident for India: A Historical and Analytical Study'. It was published eight years later under the title, 'The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India'. After submission of his Ph.D. thesis, he left Columbia University to join London School of Eco-nomics and Political Science. In October, 1916 he got admission in the Gray's Inn for Law. Due to the expiry of the Maharaja Sayarirao scholarship, he returned home after spending a year in London working on a thesis for M.Sc. (Eco.) degree. In July 1917, Ambedkar was appointed Military Secretary to the Maharaja of Baroda. He saw the ugly practice of caste system in its fullest operation. He was not allowed even to have drinking water in the office. He left Baroda on account of the ill-treatment meted out to him. He returned to Bombay in November 1917. In November 1918, he got Lecturership of Political Economy in Sydeneham College, Bombay. The high-caste Teachers objected to his drinking water from the pot reserved for the professional staff. He remained in the College from 11th November, 1918 to 11th November, 1920 and resigned from his post to resume his studies in Law and Economics in London. He attended the Depressed Classes Conferences which were held at Nagpur in 1918 and at Kolhapur on March 21, 1920 under the Presidentship of Sahu Maharaja. In September, 1920 Ambedkar rejoined the London School of Economics and Political Science. He qualified for the degree of Barister-at-law from the Gray's Inn, London. He refused the proposal of Sahu Maharaja regarding protection and maintenace of Ramabai, but, however, he accepted the assistance from him. In June, 1921 he got the degree of M.Sc. (Economics) on the thesis entitled 'Provincial Centralization of Imperial Finance in British India'. In March, 1923 he was awarded D.Sc. (Eco-nomics) degree on 'The Problem of the Rupee'. In May, 1947 the book was published under the title, 'History of Indian Currency and Banking', Vol. I. In April, 1923 he met E.S.Montague, Secretary of State for India and Vithalbhai Patel and discussed the grievances of the untouchables in India. In June, 1923 Ambedkar started legal practice in the High Cour of Jiudicature, Bombay. Subsequently he left the practice and became the Lecturer of Mercantile Law at Batliboi's Account-ancy Institute on part-time basis for three years. On the 9th March, 1924 he organized a meeting at the Damodar Hall, Bombay to discuss the problems of depressed classes. On the 2nd July, 1924 he formed a Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha to spread education, improve economic conditions and air the grievances of the depressed classes. On the 3rd April, 1927 he started a newspaper named 'Bahishkrit Bharat'. He launched a Satyagraha at Mahad for temple entry. In 1926, he gave evidence before the Royal Commission on Currency and Finance. In 1927, he was nominated to the Bombay Legislative Council alongwith Dr. Solanki. In the Second Round Table Conference which was held in London from August 1931 to December 1931, Gandhi claimed the leadership of the untouchables which Ambedkar opposed. In August 1932, Ramsay Macdonald published his communal award giving seperate electorate to the untouchables. Gandhi opposed it and launched a fast unto death to get it stopped. Consequently on the 24th September, 1932 Ambedkar signed the 'Poona-Pact' with Gandhi. Ambedkar became a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Constitutional Reforms in 1932 and remained in that capacity till 1934. He attended the Third Round Table Conference in London in 1932-33. In June, 1935 Ambedkar was appointed Principal and Perry Professor of Jurisprudence in the Government Law College, Bombay. On October 13, 1935 a provincial conference of the depressed classes was held at Yeola, Nasik under the President-ship of Ambedkar, in which he declared that he was born as a Hindu, but he would not die a Hindu. In December, 1935 the Jat-Pat Todak Mandal of Lahore invited him to preside over their annual conference. In January 1936, Jagjivan Ram alongwith some prominent workers met Ambedkar for the first time in Bombay on the issue of religious conversion. On the 30th May, 1936 he addressed the Bombay Presidency Mahar Conference and advocated renunciation of Hinduism. He was nominated to Bombay Legislature by the Governor. Ambedkar formed Independent Labour Party under the Government of India Act, 1935. The party contested 17 seats for Bombay Legislature and secured 15 seats. In August, 1937 he introduced Kholi and Abolition of Mahad Watan Bill. In 1938, the Congress Party introduced a Bill, whereby they wanted to change the untouchables' nomenclature to 'Harijan'. Ambedkar opposed the Bill. In July, 1942 he was appointed as a Labour member to the Executive Council of the Governor General of India and continued in that capacity till July 1946. In August, 1947 Ambedkar was elected Chairman of the Drafting Committee for the preparation of the Constitution of India. On the 15th August, 1947 India got the independence and Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister. Ambedkar joined the Cabinet as Minister of Law. On the 25th September, 1951 Ambedkar resigned from the Nehru Cabinet on the issue of government apathy towards the Scheduled Castes and on the differences with the Cabinet on India's Foreign Policy and the Hindu Code Bill. In 1948, Ambedkar got married with Dr. Sharada of Bombay who came to be known as Savita Ambedkar later. On the 27th November, 1949 Ambedkar presented the Constitution of India to the Government. On June 5, 1949 Columbia University from where he had got Ph.D. degree 35 years earlier, conferred the degree of LL.D. on Ambedkar at its special convocation. The same year (1949), he addressed the World Buddhist Conference in Kathmandu, Nepal on 'Marxism versus Buddhism'. In December, 1950 he again attended the World Buddhist Conference in Sri Lanka. In July, 1951 he formed the Bharatiya Bauddha Janasangha. In September, 1951 he compiled a Buddhist Prayer Book named Upasana Path. He was nominated as a delegate to the World Buddhist Conference, Rangoon in 1954. In May, 1955 he founded the Bharatiya Bauddha Mahasabha. On the 14th October, 1956 Ambedkar embraced Buddhism at a historic ceremony in Nagpur. More than half a million people followed him on the same occasion and millions koined his movement subsequently.
