Some objectives of the program are: (1) To help pupils appreciate that language is the basis of all culture;(2) To provide opportunities in a natural setting for the practice of communication skills which will promote desirable human relationships and effective group participation; and (3) To teach pupils to listen attentively and analytically and to evaluate what they hear. The program introduces adolescents to literary, linguistic, and rhetorical traditions and forms; it also caters to students, interests, and uses, as much as possible, contemporary materials and ideas. The program encourages student involvement in all its aspects and emphasizes learning through all the senses so that learning is total rather than merely verbal. The program presents major units for each grade, 7-9. There are avariety of types of unitsin each grade, e.g., at least one unit that emphasizes a particular literary genre, one thatis thematically organized, and another that emphasizes the continuity of a particularliterary tradition or motif. The work on these bulletins was begun during the school year 1967 by a team of three teachers (Mrs. Marian Sibley, Mrs. Margaret Park, and Miss Patricia Gardner) and supervisors (Mrs. Stella Johnston, Miss Jean Sisk, and Mrs. Louella Nbodward). The importance of the task was explicitly recognized by the Board of Education and the Superintendentts Staff in their willingness to release the three teachers full time during the school year, February to June, in order to set up a sequence of units and a general guide for the summer workshop committee that finally produced the units presented in this publication. The units were experimental in the sense that they were tried out during the school year 1967-1968 add revised in a more permanent form during the summer of 1968.The framework of the program as a whole, however, is flexible enough to provide a more permanent curricular base, one capable of change and adaptation for a number of years. Because the junior high school program is not a revision of former courses of study in English, it reflects many of the most innovative ideas in the teaching of secandary English as well as the soundest and most successful methods and content of the past. Above all; it represents a pioneering attempt to establish a deliberately articulated sequence of progression in language skills, concepts, and attitudes for students of junior high school and middle school age. A Journal of Literary Translation 22–23 (2009/2010): 33–55 doi:10.4467/16891864ePC.13.002.0856 Monika Woźniak ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A PUSS IN BOOTS: Hanna Januszewska’s POLISH TRANSLATION AND ADAPTATION OF CHARLES Perrault’s FAIRY TALES Abstract: This article opens with an overview of the Polish reception of fairy tales, Perrault’s in particular, since 1700. The introductory section investigates the long- established preference for adaptation rather than translation of this genre in Poland and provides the framework for an in-depth comparative analysis of the first Polish translation of Mother Goose Tales by Hanna Januszewska, published in 1961, as well as her adaptation of Perrault’s tales ten years later. The examination focuses on two questions: first, the cultural distance between the original French text and Polish fairy- tales, which causes objective translation difficulties; second, the cultural, stylistic and linguistic shifts introduced by Januszewska in the process of transforming her earlier translation into a free adaptation of Perrault’s work. These questions lead not only to comparing the originality or literary value of Januszewska’s two proposals, but also to examining the reasons for the enormous popularity of the adapted version. The faithful translation, by all means a good text in itself, did not gain wide recognition and, if not exactly a failure, it was nevertheless an unsuccessful attempt to introduce Polish readers to the original spirit of Mother Goose Tales.     ‘LOVE, AGAIN’ CAST BIOS TERI POLO (Chloe Baker) – Teri Polo is best known for her role as Robert De Niro’s daughter, Pam Byrnes, in the “Meet the Parents” feature films. She recently starred in “The Little Fockers,” the third installment of the movie franchise and completed production on the feature “Beyond” opposite Jon Voight. Polo has also recently filmed the Lifetime movie “We Have Your Husband” and had a recurring role on “Law & Order: Los Angeles.” She played the character of Casey Winters, wife of Detective Rex Winters, played by Skeet Ulrich. In 2011, Polo starred in the ABC series “Man Up.” Polo’s other recent credits include the feature film “The Hole,” directed by Joe Dante and the NBC miniseries “The Storm,” both released in 2010. Polo’s film credits include “Beyond Borders” co-starring Angelina Jolie, the suspense thriller “The Unsaid” opposite Andy Garcia and “Domestic Disturbance” opposite John Travolta and Vince Vaughn. She co-starred opposite De Niro and Stiller in “Meet the Parents,” for which she won a People’s Choice Award and its sequel “Meet the Fockers.” Originally from Dover, Delaware, Polo began her performing career as a dancer. By age 13, she was attending New York’s School of Ballet. Craig, Dean, College of Arts and Sciences ii CHAPTER ONE Lucy Sullivan first noticed she was disappearing on Monday morning as she prepared to return to work at the Field Museum. This was two weeks after Sean had died, at the peak of Chicago’s worst heat wave in history, and two weeks after she had asked, politely, for time and space alone. The apartment smelled of the worn-out sympathies of friends. Baskets of shriveled oranges and pears and wilting lilies and roses moldered on the coffee table and mantle above the fireplace in the living room and anywhere else Lucy had found room to place them. She was certain there were even more baskets waiting for her outside the door of the apartment. She hadn’t opened the door during her seclusion, hadn’t touched the fruit or watered the plants. The idea that a dozen oranges or a clichéd peace plant would alleviate her grief brought on such an unreasonable rage that she’d decided it was best to ignore the whole lot. Outside it was pitch black, except for the sickly yellow-white pools of light illuminating the empty, elevated train tracks above North Sedgwick Avenue.
