CLAREMONT McKENNA COLLEGE FILM REVIEW AGGREGATORS AND THEIR EFFECT ON SUSTAINED BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCE SUBMITTED TO PROFESSOR DARREN FILSON AND DEAN GREGORY HESS BY NICHOLAS KRISHNAMURTHY FOR SENIOR THESIS FALL / 2011 November 28, 2011 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my parents for their constant support of my academic and career endeavors, my brother for his advice throughout college, and my friends for always helping to keep things in perspective. I would also like to thank Professor Filson for his help and support during the development and execution of this thesis. Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings.

  • Guess the Movie - Linking Facebook Pages to Imdb Movies
Guess the movie - Linking Facebook pages to IMDb movies Paolo Fornacciari1, Barbara Guidi2, Monica Mordonini1, Jacopo Orlandini1, Laura Sani1, and Michele Tomaiuolo1 1 Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Architettura - Universit`adi Parma (Italy) 2 Dipartimento di Informatica - Universit`adi Pisa (Italy) Abstract. In Facebook, the set of pages liked by some users represents an important knowledge about their real life tastes. However, the process of classification, which is already hard when dealing with dozens of classes and genres, is made even more difficult by the very coarse information of Facebook pages. Our work originates from a large dataset of pages liked by users of a Facebook app. To overcome the limitations of multilabel automatic classification of free-form user-generated pages, we acquire data also from IMDb, a large public database about movies. We use it to associate with high accuracy a given cinema-related page on Facebook to the corresponding record on IMDb, which includes plenty of metadata in addition to genres. To this aim, we compare different approaches. The obtained results demonstrate that the highest accuracy is obtained by the combined use of different methods and metrics. Keywords: Online Social Networks, Data Mining, Information Retrieval, Text Similarity 1 Introduction Nowadays, Online Social Networks (OSNs) are the most popular applications in Internet. They changed the way of how people communicate and interact. Struc- tural properties of OSNs and, in particular, understanding users' behavior when they connect to OSNs is crucial for designing user-centered systems. In particu- lar, analysing every aspect of the online social life of users, we could be able to build a kind of system, as a distributed system [9], to model a current Online Social Network, as Facebook.

Polansky Onbeyond LLC, Fairfax, California Stanton A. Glantz, PhD University of California, San Francisco ___________________________ University of California, San Francisco This publication is available at www.escholarship.org/uc/item/7kd981j3 July 2016 Tobacco product placement and its reporting to the FTC | 2 Summary of findings The historical record strongly suggests that asking tobacco companies to report their product placement activities and expenditures did not capture all activity in this area. This report compares expenditures for product placement described in internal documents from American Tobacco, Brown & Williamson, Liggett & Myers, Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds tobacco companies with reports the companies were required to submit to the US Federal Trade Commission in the “endorsements and testimonials” category of cigarette promotion and advertising. During that time, in their internal documents, American Tobacco, Brown & Williamson, Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, or their contracted product placement agents, listed 750 motion pictures as engaged for product placement, 600 of which were released widely to theaters (Appendix). Substantial discrepancies exist between product placement spending described in the internal industry records and the spending reported to the Federal Trade Commission in the “endorsements and testimonials” category. Nearly half (47 percent; $2.3 million of about $5 million) of spending for on-screen product placement described in internal industry records between 1978 and 1994 was not reported in to the FTC in the “endorsements and testimonials” category.
