It consists of eight weeks of programming (the average summer program) but can be adapted to be a year’s worth of programming if a library so desires. Hammond The University of Kansas t he challenges facing contemporary boys are complex, highlighting the importance of positive paternal influence for young men to achieve success. this study examines the father-son relationships of 10 prominent gifted men of achievement to identify factors influencing talent development. through biographical analysis, 6 significant themes were identified: unconditional belief in son, strong work ethic, encouragement and guidance, maintaining high expectations and fostering determination, pride in son’s accomplishments, and mutual admiration and respect. implications for parents and educators of high-achieving gifted males are discussed. “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it.” —Clarence Kelland (Lyons & Lyons, 2002, p. 44) It is a challenging time to be a boy in this country. Such is the mes- sage heralded in today’s popular press (Sommers, 2000a; Tyre, 2006), and bookstore shelves are resplendent with recently published books calling attention to the plight of the young American male (e.g., Neu & Weinfeld, 2007). Questionnaire respondents were mainly parents of children ages 2 -6; mothers outnumbered fathers -9:1. Results included the findings that children watched TV an average of three hours a day; this varied little throughout the country and between those viewing Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and those .watching commercial programs. Younger children preferred the former, older the latter. Parents gave overwhelming support to PBS, especially to Sesame Street, Mister Rogers and Electric Company, rating these superior to their commercial competitors. Ninety-six percent of the parents favored changing practices regarding commercials on children's TV, with 40% wanting their elimination, 25% a reduction, and 25% a clustering of commercials at the end of .programs. Annoyance was expressed over toy commercials and the quality of the toys themselves. Most parents felt TV was influential; they thought TV, especially PBS, taught communication skills, enhanced ,social learning and broadened interests. They also felt TV. had too much violence and materialism and that certain programs could foster passivity and anti-social behavior.
