La evolución de la narrativa en el videojuego Trabajo final de grado Curso 2018/2019 Javier M. García González Beneharo Mesa Peña Grado en Periodismo Profesor tutor: Dr. Benigno León Felipe Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y de la Comunicación Trabajo final de grado RESUMEN En este trabajo se pretende mostrar los mecanismos y funcionamientos narrativos dentro de la industria lúdica del videojuego, comentando los primeros títulos que fueron creados y la posterior evolución de la narración de sus historias. Asimismo, se analizarán las particularidades entre las mecánicas del videojuego y cómo estas se ajustan a la narrativa a cada género, señalando cuáles son los más populares, cuáles incurren más en disonancias, juegos de autor, así como aquellos títulos que han sentado precedentes a la hora de crear historias en los videojuegos. Como conclusión final, se tratará de mostrar las particularidades y complejidades de un medio que, si bien es menos longevo que el cine, música o la literatura, genera más beneficio que los anteriores en su conjunto. Por otro lado, aunque en sus inicios el videojuego tuviera unos objetivos más limitados, a lo largo de su evolución se ha acercado al lenguaje literario y cinematográfico, creando así una retroalimentación entre estas tres modalidades artísticas. Despite the renewed competition from Nintendo and with Microsoft coming up with the Xbox One X, Sony’s console proved once again why it has been the undisputed leader of this generation. While earlier years saw quite a few remarkable games on the system, 2018 in particular witnessed a slew of breathtaking gaming experiences that transcended the console itself. From a Greek god in Norse lands to a mature superhero giving his all in the Big Apple, the PS4 established a new standard for the exclusives it houses. As with the other year-end best games of lists, preference in rank has been given to the exclusives, even if a third-party game has been arguably better. Interestingly, the list contains just two such games, the rest being exclusives, a testament to Sony’s commitment to the console five years down the line. Bluepoint Games retained the feel of the PS2 classic while vastly improving the graphics and controls, making it a technical marvel, and more importantly, a sheer joy to play. REDMOND DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Isabel Molina Professor Antoinette Burton Professor Paula Treichler, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes two best-selling videogames, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) and Square Enix' Final Fantasy 12 (2006), as sites of contestation between commercial media corporations on the one hand, and communities of artists, consumers and non-commercial digital users on the other. I argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 rewrites the stealth espionage thriller into a critique of neoliberalism's financial speculations and neocolonial wars, while Final Fantasy 12 rewrites the fantasy role-playing videogame into a critique of the colonial and neocolonial legacies of fantasy and role-playing fiction. Using the tools of critical communications theory, postcolonial media studies, and digital media scholarship, I argue that these videogames narrate the struggle between neoliberalism (i.e. the ideology of late 20 th century market fundamentalism which exerted global hegemony during the thirty years from 1975 to 2005) and a wide range of anti-neoliberal social movements, developmental states (especially those of the BRIC nations, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China), and non-commercial networks of digital production, distribution and consumption. I also argue that these videogames frame the politics of transnational media production and transnational audience reception in productive ways. -

Questo videogame, apparentemente innocuo, avrebbe provocato casi di allucinazioni, follia e amnesie varie, il suo gameplay si presenterebbe come una sorta diSpace Invaders, con forme geometriche tridimensionali dinamiche che ipnotizzavano il giocatore; a intervalli regolari faceva la comparsa inoltre trasparenza un messaggio subliminale che recitava “Suicide Yourself”. Dopo appena un mese dalla sua uscita, e una serie di casi sospetti,Polybius sarebbe scomparso da tutte le sale giochi, e i cabinati sarebbero stati sequestrati da misteriosi “men in black”. Molti sono i dubbi sull’esistenza di un simile gioco maledetto, creato dalla Central Intelligence Agency per condurre un esperimento sul controllo mentale, ma è certo che di recente il visionario Jeff Minter ne ha fatto una realtà, realizzandone una versione in VR, ripresa perfino dai Nine Inch Nails per il videoclip di Less Than. La prima volta di Yoshida su God of War L’ultima fatica di Santa Monica Studio non ha certo bisogno di presentazioni: sfondata la soglia delle 5 milioni di unità vendute in un mese, acclamato da critica e pubblico, per molti potrebbe persino essere uno dei giochi migliori di questo decennio; insomma, quei cinque lunghi anni di sviluppo sono davvero valsi la candela. Anni che però non sono stati tutti rose e fiori: quando si stava ancora lavorando a una prima versione funzionante, ha raccontato Cory Barlog (creative director del gioco) durante il Devcom di Colonia, il team di sviluppo stava costruendo l’engine e gli strumenti di base, le meccaniche, i livelli, tutto contemporaneamente, e il risultato non stava piacendo né a lui, né a loro. Durante una sessione di testing uno dei partecipanti minacciò persino di abbandonare il progetto, perché a detta suasi stava rovinando il personaggio di Kratos. Una reazione simile, stavolta da parte del pubblico, si ebbe durante l’E3 del 2016, quando quel trailer lasciò dubbiosi molti fan della serie riguardo a cosa l’ormai ex dio della guerra stesse diventando. Nemmeno il presidente di Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida rimase soddisfatto da ciò che vide, quando per la prima volta provò il gioco. Da quando prese il controller in mano a quando andò via dalla stanza non proferì parola, ma da come scuoteva la testa e alzava le spalle, era evidente che ciò che vedeva non gli stava piacendo. Il suo giudizio fu noto solo qualche giorno dopo, mentre parlava con un amico di Barlog. -
