REDMOND DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Angharad Valdivia, Chair Professor Isabel Molina Professor Antoinette Burton Professor Paula Treichler, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes two best-selling videogames, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 (2008) and Square Enix' Final Fantasy 12 (2006), as sites of contestation between commercial media corporations on the one hand, and communities of artists, consumers and non-commercial digital users on the other. I argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 rewrites the stealth espionage thriller into a critique of neoliberalism's financial speculations and neocolonial wars, while Final Fantasy 12 rewrites the fantasy role-playing videogame into a critique of the colonial and neocolonial legacies of fantasy and role-playing fiction. Using the tools of critical communications theory, postcolonial media studies, and digital media scholarship, I argue that these videogames narrate the struggle between neoliberalism (i.e. the ideology of late 20 th century market fundamentalism which exerted global hegemony during the thirty years from 1975 to 2005) and a wide range of anti-neoliberal social movements, developmental states (especially those of the BRIC nations, i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China), and non-commercial networks of digital production, distribution and consumption. I also argue that these videogames frame the politics of transnational media production and transnational audience reception in productive ways. -

God of War: Vita E Morte Di Un Deicida
God of War: Vita e Morte di un Deicida L‘ira incontrollabile, la sete di vendetta e il sacrificio, sono tre delle innumerevoli sfaccettature di Kratos, la personificazione della potenza e della rabbia, protagonista di una delle saghe che è entrata con prepotenza nell’Olimpo dei videogiochi. In questo articolo ripercorreremo le vicende del “fu” Dio della Guerra, dai concept sino all’imminente God of War su PlayStation 4. Attenzione a possibili spoiler. Sviluppato da Sony Santa Monica, God of War ebbe una gestazione particolare e il cui successo fu del tutto inaspettato. God of War non fu il primo progetto di Santa Monica: tutto iniziò con un gioco meno ambizioso ma capace di dare i primi asset ed esperienza al team che avrebbe realizzato il noto titolo d’ambientazione mitologia, Kinetica. Fu proprio uno degli sviluppatori diKinetica , David Jaffe, a divenire capo del nuovo team che, ispirandosi a titoli comeIco e Devil May Cry volle portare sulla nuova console Sony qualcosa che non si era mai visto e dal tono epico. Due aspetti erano fondamentali: il contesto e il protagonista. L’ambientazione scelta fu quella della antica Grecia, con quell’immancabile epica che permetteva di prendere innumerevoli spunti sia dal punto vista dei nemici, della trama e delle sezioni platform. Se questa fu relativamente semplice, la scelta del protagonista non lo fu altrettanto: il team di sviluppo era deciso a creare un personaggio originale, carismatico e brutale ma lontano dagli stilemi dell’epica classica. Furono passati in rassegna diversi modelli, come soldati con maschere ma abbastanza anonimi, guerrieri dalla spiccata vena africana fino a un personaggio che portava sulle spalle un bimbo o un cane, ma anche qui nulla di fatto, grazie a Zeus.
