Round Square - Prep to Year 12 Wellbeing Program

What is Round Square?

Round Square is a network of over 200 schools that share a holistic approach to learning, focusing on the six ideals of renowned educationalist, Kurt Hahn. Kurt Hahn’s philosophy was based on respect for adolescents. He believed that young people should be given an opportunity through leadership and service to help others, and that they could learn and make a difference in the real world. Programs such as Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh Award grew from Kurt Hahn’s philosophies.

Why Round Square?

Ipswich Grammar School believes that our students will benefit holistically from the teachings and directions of the values of Round Square. The IDEALS of Round Square align to the Ipswich Grammar School Strategic Plan as they will challenge the boys to become exceptional performers and support our boys journey to manhood.

Objectives of Round Square?

Round Square is based on six IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service

How will the IDEALS of Round Square be demonstrated to my son?

Ipswich Grammar incorporates the IDEALS of Round Square in the day-to-day running of the school. From Junior and Secondary adventure camps, designated Wellbeing classes covering key topics such as anti- bullying strategies; service projects such as our attendance at multiple ANZAC Day events; feeding the disadvantaged; participating in the big sleepout; to raising funds for kids in remote parts of Africa. The IDEALS of Round Square are also demonstrated with student run committees to discuss school projects, international student and staff visits by schools from China, Vietnam and Japan, to student mentoring programs across the school. Our boys also benefit from a number of student exchange programs both regionally and internationally.

Our boys will have the opportunity to experience the IDEALS of Round Square in action over their schooling journey.

School Song

We’ve a song to sing, When football we play, May its echoes ring On a bright winter’s day, From the Gulf to the Southern Bight; Tis the game of all games for a boy; We’ve a School to praise, Then its “willow the King”, Which in former days, Makes the echoes ring, Has seen many a struggle and fight; And naught can our pleasure alloy; We follow the rules, We swim and we run, Of the ancient schools, Recreation is fun, Who have done so much for the world, And important for whatever we do, May our deeds be known, As rivals in sport, And our work be shown, Though our times may be short, Wherever the flag is unfurled. We learn honour and manliness too.

CHORUS: CHORUS:

Then together we’ll work, Yet to each comes a day, and together we’ll play, When our work and our play, And welcome each chance of a holiday; Our school days forever are done; Though our tasks may be long, When sadly we part We are brave, we are strong, With love in our heart, In the Ipswich Grammar School. from the school where our laurels were won; In the classroom work, As onward we go, When in years we grow, We will never shirk, and learn life’s great sorrows and joys; Though irksome our tasks may be ever, Whate’er may befall, Let us ever recall, To History or Science The school where we battled as boys. We’ll bid defiance, Till we conquer by earnest endeavour; When exams are near, Written by Mr B. G. Lawrance We’ll face without fear, The question so deep in design, We’ve prizes to gain Or a place to retain, so to duty ourselves we resign.

CHORUS:

15 Tuckshop

Ordering of lunches and snacks from the Tuckshop for Morning Tea and Lunch is completed by following the online ordering system provided at the school via www.flexischools.com.au

Just prior to the release of students for the break, these orders are delivered to the Junior School eating areas in covered boxes. Staff on duty in the eating areas check and distribute every order.

Should a student have misplaced their lunch, measures are taken to check the situation prior to contacting parents and seeking permission for a simple replacement meal to be purchased from the tuckshop. An invoice for this meal is then forwarded to parents.

Snacks such as chips or iceblocks are available through the same system. However, students are requested to present their order bag to the tuckshop in order to collect any frozen purchases. This prevents excessive melting before collection.

Year 7 - 12 students are free to attend the tuckshop during break times to purchase meals. Alternatively parents can order online via the Flexischools website and students collect at the beginning of the designated break.

16 Appendix 1

CODE OF CONDUCT (Prep to Year 12)

One of the aims of Ipswich Grammar School is to continue the training in decency and good manners received by boys at home from their parents; and, to further this training so that a boy’s character is readily recognisable as that of a gentleman.

Accordingly, rules and regulations are defined to ensure: a) That a boy’s conduct, through self control and moderation, reflects credit on the boy himself, his parents and on this School; and b) That the comfort, rights and safety of all School members be protected. Day boys are reminded that they are subject to School discipline from the time they leave home to attend School or a School function until the time they return to their homes at the expiration of the School Day or the School function.

Boarders are reminded that they are subject to School discipline at all times other than when they are under the direct control of their parents or guardians.

The following regulations apply to all students attending this School:

1. Boys will, at all times, respect and comply with the lawful authority vested in Staff, Prefects and Monitors. 2. A boy’s personal appearance will be beyond reproach at all times. He will conform to the standard of dress and personal grooming prescribed; and, those boys who shave must always appear clean- shaven. 3. No boy is permitted to smoke or to drink alcohol liquor on school premises, when wearing School uniform, or when attending a function as a member of the School. At no time is he to use, or have in his possession, drugs other than those prescribed for his use by a medical practitioner. Boarders are not to have in their possession any tablets, medicine or drugs of any description. 4. The theft of or the wilful damage or destruction of any item of private, public or School property will be severely dealt with. 5. Matches, cigarette lighters, knives, firearms, fireworks, aerosol cans and pornographic material, as well as the instructions for preparation, or the actual preparation, of explosives, are strictly forbidden. Any form of substance abuse will be treated as an extremely serious offence. 6. Any form of bullying will not be tolerated. 7. Boys are expressly forbidden to play games near or loiter in the vicinity of motor cars belonging to visitors or to any member of the School’s academic, administrative or ancillary staff. 8. Boys may drive motorcars to and from School only by complying with the regulations laid down. For further directions on this matter they will report to the Head of Year 12. 9. Boys may not go beyond the School boundaries without the express consent of the Headmaster, Deputy Headmaster, Heads of Year, Dean of Students. 10. Each boy must attend as a spectator or participate at two of the three GPS Championship events (Swimming, Cross Country, Track and Field). 11. Cheating is regarded as a very serious offence and will be dealt with accordingly.

Our main aim in discipline is to ensure boys exhibit behaviours that identify them as young gentlemen and that no boy interferes with the right of another to learn. To achieve this, a wide variety of deterrents exist. These include: lunchtime detentions, loss of privileges, letters of apology, behaviour contracts, work cards, conduct cards, suspension and expulsion.
