With an increasingly skeptical society to pesticides it is important that scientists and non-specialists (farmers and neighbours) meet and discuss their ideas about insecticide use and risks. This is necessary because the public’s perception of risks may well diverge significantly from that of specialists. In the periurban areas (the urban fringe) these problems and divergent opinions are likely to be more pronounced than in the rural areas. This review paper is also discussing the insect pest migrations and trap cropping with a view to find out whether insecticide application in field crops (e.g. oilseed rape) affects pest density in the adjacent garden crops (e.g. radish). Preface This introductory paper is a review based on references from libraries, internet and personal communication. -

The mite fauna from ‘Jóia 4’, ‘Ouromel 3’, ‘Regis’ and ‘Rei da conserva’ cultivars over the rootstock Okinawa were determined from December 2002 to February 2006. Samples composed by 72 leaves were collected fortnightly from upper, middle and lower third of each tree and four trees per cultivar. -

AN ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE COCCINELLID (COLEOPTERA COCCINELLIDAE) INTRODUCTIONS AND ESTABLISHMENTS IN HAWAII: 1885 to 2015 JOHN R. LEEPER PO Box 13086 Las Cruces, NM USA, 88013 [email protected] [1] Abstract. Blackburn & Sharp (1885: 146 & 147) described the first coccinellids found in Hawaii. The first documented introduction and successful establishment was of Rodolia cardinalis from Australia in 1890 (Swezey, 1923b: 300). This paper documents 167 coccinellid species as having been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands with forty-six (46) species considered established based on unpublished Hawaii State Department of Agriculture records and literature published in Hawaii. The paper also provides nomenclatural and taxonomic changes that have occurred in the Hawaiian records through time. INTRODUCTION The Coccinellidae comprise a large family in the Coleoptera with about 490 genera and 4200 species (Sasaji, 1971). The majority of coccinellid species introduced into Hawaii are predacious on insects and/or mites. Exceptions to this are two mycophagous coccinellids, Calvia decimguttata (Linnaeus) and Psyllobora vigintimaculata (Say). Of these, only P. vigintimaculata (Say) appears to be established, see discussion associated with that species’ listing. The members of the phytophagous subfamily Epilachninae are pests themselves and, to date, are not known to be established in Hawaii. None of the Coccinellidae in Hawaii are thought to be either endemic or indigenous. All have been either accidentally or purposely introduced. Three species, Scymnus discendens (= Diomus debilis LeConte), Scymnus ocellatus (=Scymnobius galapagoensis (Waterhouse)) and Scymnus vividus (= Scymnus (Pullus) loewii Mulsant) were described by Sharp (Blackburn & Sharp, 1885: 146 & 147) from specimens collected in the islands. There are, however, no records of introduction for these species prior to Sharp’s descriptions. -

They belong to family Coccinellidae of order Akhtar Ali Khan Coleoptera. The family has been subdivided into six subfamilies: Sticholotidinae, Chilochorinae, Division of Entomology, Scymninae, Coccidulinae, Coccinellinae and Epilachninae. These are universal predators and occupy Sher-e-Kashmir University of important place in biological control. REPRODUCTIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY OF GONATOCERUS ASHMEADI, AN EGG PARASITOID OF THE GLASSY-WINGED SHARPSHOOTER Project leader: Cooperator: Mark Hoddle Leigh Pilkington Dept. of Entomology Dept. of Entomology University of California University of California Riverside, CA 92521 Riverside, CA 92521 Reporting period: The results reported here are from work conducted from April 2004 to October 2004. ABSTRACT The reproductive and developmental biology of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a self-introduced parasitoid of the glassy- winged sharpshooter (GWSS) Homalodisca coagulata Say, was determined at five constant temperatures in the laboratory; 15; 20; 25; 30; and 33°C. Wasps at each experimental temperature were given, on average, between 10 and 15 GWSS eggs per day for its natural life for oviposition. At 30°C, immature G. ashmeadi sustained the highest mortality rates as adult emergence was lowest at this temperature. The largest proportion of female offspring was produced at 25°C and lifetime fecundity was greatest at 25°C. The development time was greatest at 15°C and lowest at 30°C. Mean adult longevity was inversely related to temperature with a maximum of approximately 30 days at 15°C to a minimum of approximately two days at 33°C. [email protected]. RESUMEN. El Psilido Asiático de los Cítricos actualmente es la principal plaga de la citricultura en el mundo por ser vector de la bacteria Candidatus liberobacter que ocasiona el Huanglongbing. Tanto adultos como ninfas de cuarto y quinto instar pueden ser vectores de esta enfermedad por lo que su control es básico para minimizar este problema. Se realizó esta investigación para conocer el comportamiento de los estados inmaduros de la plaga a varias alternativas químicas de control. El análisis de los datos de mortalidad muestra que las poblaciones de Diaphorina tratadas con: clorpirifós, dimetoato, clotianidin, dinotefurán, thiametoxan, endosulfán, imidacloprid, lambdacialotrina, zetacipermetrina, y lambdacialotrina registraron mortalidades superiores al 85%. Por otra parte, las poblaciones tratadas con: pymetrozine (pyridine azomethines) y spirotetramat (regulador de crecimiento de la síntesis de lípidos) a las dosis evaluadas no presentaron efecto tóxico por contacto o efecto fumigante sobre la población antes mencionada. The Asian Citrus Psyllid, vector of Candidatus Liberobacter, bacteria that causes Huanglongbing disease, is currently the major pest of citrus in the world. Both, adults and nymphs of fourth and fifth instar can be vectors this pathogen, and therefore their control is essential to prevent increase and spread of disease. This research was carried out to evaluate the biological response of the immature stages of the pest to several chemical alternatives. -

Species in the genus Carpophilus are the most commonly encountered and are considered nuisance pests around pineapple fields and canneries (Illingworth, 1929; Schmidt, 1935; Hinton, 1945). The remaining species are less frequently encountered and are not considered to be impor- tant pests. We report 2 new state records, 5 new island records, and 4 taxonomic changes for the adventive sap beetles in Hawai`i. With the exception of Stelidota chontalensis Sharp, all of the species reported are widely distributed outside Hawai`i.
