The Reviews - An Oscar Special

True Grit - Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld. Written and Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

'Following the murder of her father, the stubborn young woman gets help from a tough U.S. Marshal to track down her father's murderer'.

"When asked to write a review of a remake, especially a remake of a classic John Wayne western, i was dubious to say the least. I say dubious because it seems with every Hollywood remake the word 'Fail' follows shortly afterwards. Having watched the Award Winning 1969 version it will take some fine acting to fill the 'Dukes' boots and spurs, lets just hope this remake is more True Grit than absolute shit.

One thing is clear about this updated version, it doesn't just sit there and let its predecessor shine on through, oh no, not at all. With its beautiful attention to detail in its costume, language and 'jaw dropping' landscapes. We also have an eerie time struck score, combined with the excellent direction. The talented brothers have clearly used a Narrator at points in the film to keep it at a steady pace, missing out any uneccessary scenes.

With this remake comes a fine cast in Jeff Bridges as 'Rooster Cogburn', who's portrayal is every bit as belligerent and cantankerous as Wayne's original. To spur him along we have a young starlet in Hailee Steinfeld who as 'Mattie Ross' excels and steals many of the scene's she is in. Unfortunately Matt Damon's 'LaBoeuf' is lacking substance somewhat, coming off wooden and almost missable in a film rich with characters and tense dialogue.

Personally i'd say there's just enough 'Grit' in this version to make it stand apart from the original. It leaves you with a great feeling of authenticity, with a few subtle changes from the John Wayne version, the Coen brothers have crafted a wonderful classic western for our time. From the growling Jeff Bridges as 'Rooster' to the innocent, but very stubborn, Hailee Steinfeld as 'Mattie Ross' this film left me feeling more than satisfied and deserves its place amongst the other great westerns such as 'Once upton a time in a west', 'Dances with wolves' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'.

Martyn Cunningham

Black Swan - , , and . Written by and Andres Heinz. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.

'A ballet dancer wins the lead in "" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odette's evil sister, Odile, the Black Swan'. imdb

"A heterosexual man walks into a cinema to watch a film about Ballet. No this isn't the start of a joke this is my life, sat slouched in F6 thinking about how i know nothing about this film and picking at popcorn that does not offer the hangover brunch i'd hoped for. But we're away with the flapping arms of a feather covered Natalie Portman whose beauty and perfection for both her performance and character role glide you towards the fact that she is inevitably mental. I don't mean irons her pants mental, i mean self harming, hallucinating, imaginary lesbian sex with your co-star mental; the co-star being Mila Kunis who i've always known as the voice of Meg in Family Guy.

Anyway, Portman's deranged character Nina must embrace her darkside in order for her to dance better because if she doesn't she'll cry more and that will make everybody sad. Far better to keep them unnerved at the sight of skin tearing and constant arguements with a picture painting, nail clipping, control freak of a mother who also used to dance and cry herself but quit dancing to concentrate on crying... oh and having her daughter.

That said when the credits started to roll, rather than rushing off, i had to reassess all of my initial thoughts due to the words on screen that read 'Directed by Darren Aronofsky'. Consider the eerie lighting, continual claustrophobic shots, rapid gritty edits, not to mention the use of tense sharp sound and classical music. The man who brought us the intriguingly sinister 'Pi' and the horrifically brutal ''; films that offer little enjoyment per se but are without doubt two phenomenal pieces of critically acclaimed cinema. Begging the question would I watch it again? Probably not, but would I recommend it? Yes, and have been doing so to absolutely everyone. As a regular at the cinema I found it refreshing, the cinematography alone held my attention and adjoined with solid casting it’s far from just a film about dancing. If searching for intriguing , never doubt Mr Aronofsky".

Chris Munro

The Fighter - , Amy Adams, and ..... Marky Mark. Written by and Paul Tamasy. Directed by David O. Russell.

', is a drama about boxer "Irish" Micky Ward's unlikely road to the world title welterweight title. His Rocky-like rise was shepherded by half- brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO'd by drugs and crime'. Imdb

"I want to start with explaining the intrepidation i felt walking into the cinema to watch this film. I have to say i was looking forward to it. Now, in the red corner (did you like that?), you have one of the finest actors of our or any generation. Also, i think you will agree, a clear and deserved winner of the Best Supporting Actor statue. And in the blue corner you have er.... Mark Wahlberg. I read in a fine film magazine that Mr Wahlberg with his massive influence at HBO and his very lucrative production company, cheaply and easily acquired the use of the vast array of cameras and techniques at the studio's disposal. The final product was fantastic i have to say but the sacrifice, yes the sacrifice in my opinion, was not well made.

Bale brought the familiar genius, method and preparation that i think he should be and is famous for. He investigated his character with his usual vigour and detail as the real Dicky Ecklund stated after watching his performance in an early screening. Truly one of those acting master classes only a few actors are capable of. Marky Mark did not disappoint either. Except for a short 2 minute period half way through, it was the dryest, monotoned and most wooden performance you will see this year, or any year. Like i said Marky Mark did not disappoint either. Unfortunately this has become his trademark and i am still left thinking the important words 'Why the F..K is he in this film'. Roll on the next series of Entourage, keep him out of the movie business for a while longer.

As far as the Oscars are concerned this was one of their loved gems i think. The battle of good versus evil, that underdog will prevail attitude that everyone, especially Hollywood, loves. As the whole world and i thought Best Supporting Actor, sorry, Actor in a supporting role, was Bale's. Best supporting Actress, while the fighter had 2 very good bets, the girlfriend and mother, the supreme Miss Leo won through. The girlfriend, Amy Adams puts in a feisty, quite sexy and very capable performance. Watch out for this lady in the future, although Amy Adams has been around a while now this is by far the performance of her career. Then there was the mother, Melissa Leo who is no stranger to these oscar antics. Her Ma Parker, Bad Mama like contribution was a joy to behold. Melissa Leo won the prestigous award ahead of Hailie Steinfeld's mesmorising display in True Grit".

A LOOK AT THE INFAMOUS 72. THE FILMS WHICH WERE AT THE CENTRE OF THE 1980'S OUTCRY REGARDING DECENCY AND THE PORTRAYAL OF VIOLENCE, HAVE BEEN TERMED 'VIDEO NASTIES'.

"CANNIBAL APOCOLYPSE - THE ONE THAT ISN'T SPENT ENTIRELY ON LOCATION IN SOME FAR OFF LAND. GOOD POTENTIAL FOR A REMAKE. THE WORST OF THE THREE I THINK, ABOUT A MAN HELD IN A VIETNAM PRISON CAMP FEEDING OFF VARIOUS 'CHARLIE' AND SUCH, HE CHOMPS ON A FELLOW AMERICAN AND BOTH COME BACK TO THE GOOD U.S OF ‘A’ WITH A CONTAGIOUS VIRUS WHICH, IF BITTEN, INFECTS YOU WITH ..... WAIT FOR IT.... CANNIBALISM. IT DOES HAVE JOHN SAXON IN FROM ENTER THE DRAGON HOWEVER .... ROPER!!! CLASSIC".

OVERALL MP RATING - 2 OUT OF 5 BANWORTHY – NO

"CANNIBAL FEROX - I ENJOYED THIS ONE. THIS IS WHAT I EXPECTED FROM THIS SORT OF FILM. I WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE BEEN LEFT SLIGHTLY MORE SHOCKED IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE FACT I'D SEEN CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST SOME YEARS PREVIOUS (AN UNCUT VERSION, BUT NOT THE FULLY UNCUT VERSION). A GROUP OF AMERICANS GO TO THE JUNGLE TO PROVE CANNIBALISM DOES NOT EXIST. THEY MEET 2 MEN RUNNING FROM THE CANNIBALS THEY TORTURED AND ENSLAVED TO FIND EMERALDS (WHAT?). NOW THE TRIBE IS OUT FOR REVENGE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS BABY IS QUITE GRAPHIC, WATCH OUT FOR THE CUTTING OF THE GENITALS WITH THE MACHETE, NICE".

OVERALL MP RATING - 3 OUT OF 5 BANWORTHY - MAYBE

"CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST - THIS, WHEN I SAW IT FOR THE FIRST TIME, WAS TRULY SHOCKING. I LATER HEARD A FRIEND SAY HE FIRST WATCHED THIS IN ITS UNCUT ENTIRETY FOR A 1ST YEAR FILM STUDIES LECTURE. I'D LIKE TO HAVE HAD A BEER WITH THAT LECTURER AND ASK HIM HIS VIEWS ON CURRENT CURRICULUM TEACHINGS. A VIDEO IS SERCHED FOR AND FOUND SHOWING FOOTAGE OF A LOST DOCUMENTARY TEAM FILMING CANNIBAL TRIBES. WHAT THEY ACTUALLY FIND IS ONE OF THE MOST MANIPULATIVE, SAVAGE THINGS THEY AND I HAVE EVER SEEN. THE GORE, SHOCK FACTOR AND SICKNESS IN THIS FILM IS SECOND TO NONE. THE TWIST, WHICH I REALLY, REALLY LOVE, IS STILL ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC IN ANY FILM I HAVE EVER SEEN. I OFTEN DISCUSS THE START WITH MY FELLOW EDITOR KRIS PEARSHOUSE AND I ALWAYS COMMENT HOW NICE AND GENTLE IT FEELS WITH AN ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC THEME TUNE (TRULY EERY ONCE YOU HAVE SEEN THE FILM), KRIS SOMETIMES SAYS, SIMILAR TO ..... FLIPPER.... MAYBE. A TRUE DEPICTION OF THE DEGRADATION FOUND IN SOME OF THESE CLASSIC TITLES FROM 70'S AND 80'S AMERICAN CINEMA. MAKE SURE YOU HUNT FOR THE COMPLETE UNCUT VERSION, GO WATCH IT".

OVERALL MP RATING - 4 OUT OF 5 BANWORTHY - YES

The Editor's Choice - Un Prophete - Tahr Rahim, Niels Arestrup. Written and Directed by Jacques Audiard

'A young Arab man is sent to a French prison where he becomes a mafia kingpin'. Imdb

The Prophet always leaves me with slight anger at its treatment in the 2010 Oscars. It was up for the foreign language film statue. It was, by some distance, the best film of its category. In fact, some influential people who know what they are talking about, said it should revolutionise the Oscars completely. The Film was to open the doors for some, if not all, foreign language films to enter in every category. It lost out, however, to the Argentinian film 'The Secret in their Eyes', which is a good film in its own right but not in the same league as Un Prophete. It was voted in a very popular poll the best prison thriller of all time, which is some statement, a true statement, but bold nevertheless. Especially when up against, one of my favourites, 'Cool Hand Luke' and the people’s choice, 'Shawshank Redemption' to name but a few. This really is a great film.

In my life i have seen my fair share and like to think (remember i said like to think) i am experienced in every, if not most . This was and still is my favourite film, yes my favourite film of all time, without a Jawa in sight. (i know what i am watching tonight). I shall endevour to explain why.

The writer/director Jacques Audiard made sure he used relative unknowns for this film, a common trait these days it seems. He was very concious of the authenticity of his gritty prison thriller. Mr Audiard used former convicts as advisors and extras to ensure the realism; In fact he decided to make the film because of the harsh environment he witnessed when screening a previous project in a maximum security prison. Tahar Rahim is the lead and what a lead he is.

Meeting the director by chance he hugely impressed in his first audition, the rest is truly a piece of casting genius. The performances and characters are so good, especially Tahar who commands the most immense empathy during the film. It reminded me of the feeling i had for Andrew Garfield's character in 'Boy - A', although a very, very different film. In conclusion, Il profeta, the much loved Italian title, is arguably the best film i have ever seen.
