Feature Film Program Alumni FEATURE FILM PROGRAM ALUMNI Since 1981, the Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program has supported over 450 independent filmmakers whose distinctive, singular work has engaged audiences worldwide. Program staff fully embrace the unique vision of each filmmaker, encouraging a rigorous creative process with a focus on original and deeply personal storytelling. Each year, up to 25 emerging filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world participate in a year-round continuum of support which includes the Screenwriters and Directors Labs, Film Composers Lab, Creative Producing Summit, ongoing creative and strategic advice, significant production and post-production resources, the Rough-Cut Screening Initiative, a Screenplay Reading Series, and direct financial support through project-specific grants and artist fellowships. In many cases, the Institute has helped the filmmakers attach producers and talent, secure financing, and assemble other significant resources to move their projects toward production and presentation. Ten films supported by the Feature Film Program premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, including AMREEKA, written and directed by Cherien Dabis; BARKING WATER, written and directed by Sterlin Harjo; THE CLONE RETURNS HOME, written and directed by Kanji Nakajima; COLD SOULS, written and directed by Sophie Barthes; DON'T LET ME DROWN, co-written by Cruz Angeles and Maria Topete and directed by Cruz Angeles; LYMELIFE, co-written by Derick and Steven Martini and directed by Derick Martini; POMEGRANATES AND MYRRH, written and directed by Najwa Najjar; SIN NOMBRE, written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga; VICTORIA DAY, written and directed by David Bezmozgis; and ZION AND HIS BROTHER, written and directed by Eran Merav. • Deliver Us to Cinema: the Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts
Deliver Us to Cinema: The Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts Kadii Lott Introduction There is a pervasive Hollywood culture of appropriating and commodifying biblical concepts and imagery into films that do not explicitly address the Abrahamic belief systems that consider the Old and New Testaments as sacred texts. Many such films received mixed reviews. Christian and Jewish groups have heavily criticised particular adaptations of scriptural stories, including Life of Brian,1 The Last Temptation of Christ,2 The Passion of Christ,3 and Noah,4 for their blasphemous or ill-intentioned treatment of biblical figures. Despite the protectiveness of religious people Kadii Lott received First Class Honours in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney in 2020. 1 The 1979 religious satire reimagined the fictional life of a man named Brian who gets mistaken for Jesus. The film was considered blasphemous by some Christians who protested against the release and the film was banned in many countries upon its release, including in Ireland and Norway. See Ben Dowell, ‘BBC to dramatise unholy row over Monty Python’s Life of Brian’, The Guardian (21 June 2011), https://www.theguardian.com/media/ 2011/jun/21/bbc-monty-python-life-of-brian. Accessed 13 July 2020. 2 Scorsese’s depicted Jesus Christ dealing with worldly temptations like everyone else. This caused outrage amongst some Christian groups, even leading to an incident in Paris where a theatre showing the film was set on fire. See Steven Greenhouse, ‘Police Suspect Arson In Fire at Paris Theater’, The New York Times (25 October 1988), p.

  • Makers: Women in Hollywood
WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD OVERVIEW: MAKERS: Women In Hollywood showcases the women of showbiz, from the earliest pioneers to present-day power players, as they influence the creation of one of the country’s biggest commodities: entertainment. In the silent movie era of Hollywood, women wrote, directed and produced, plus there were over twenty independent film companies run by women. That changed when Hollywood became a profitable industry. The absence of women behind the camera affected the women who appeared in front of the lens. Because men controlled the content, they created female characters based on classic archetypes: the good girl and the fallen woman, the virgin and the whore. The women’s movement helped loosen some barriers in Hollywood. A few women, like 20th century Fox President Sherry Lansing, were able to rise to the top. Especially in television, where the financial stakes were lower and advertisers eager to court female viewers, strong female characters began to emerge. Premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime allowed edgy shows like Sex in the City and Girls , which dealt frankly with sex from a woman’s perspective, to thrive. One way women were able to gain clout was to use their stardom to become producers, like Jane Fonda, who had a breakout hit when she produced 9 to 5 . But despite the fact that 9 to 5 was a smash hit that appealed to broad audiences, it was still viewed as a “chick flick”. In Hollywood, movies like Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games , with strong female characters at their center and strong women behind the scenes, have indisputably proven that women centered content can be big at the box office.
