    Deliver Us to Cinema: The Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts Kadii Lott Introduction There is a pervasive Hollywood culture of appropriating and commodifying biblical concepts and imagery into films that do not explicitly address the Abrahamic belief systems that consider the Old and New Testaments as sacred texts. Many such films received mixed reviews. Christian and Jewish groups have heavily criticised particular adaptations of scriptural stories, including Life of Brian,1 The Last Temptation of Christ,2 The Passion of Christ,3 and Noah,4 for their blasphemous or ill-intentioned treatment of biblical figures.     Greenberg (2011) “You like me so much more than you think you do.” Major Credits: Director: Noah Baumbach Screenplay: Noah Baumbach, from a story by Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh Cinematography: Harris Savides Music: James Murphy Principal Cast: Ben Stiller (Roger Greenberg), Greta Gerwig (Florence), Rhys Ifans (Ivan), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Beth) Production Background: Baumbach, the son of two prominent New York writers whose divorce he chronicled in his earlier feature The Squid and the Whale (2005), co-wrote the screenplay with his then-wife, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who plays the role of Greenberg’s former girlfriend. His friend and sometime collaborator (they wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou together), Wes Anderson, co-produced Greenberg with Leigh. Most of Baumbach’s films to date deal with characters who are disappointed in their lives, which do not conform to their ideal conceptions of themselves. At whatever age—a father in his 40s, his pretentious teenage son (The Squid and the Whale), a college graduate in her late twenties (Frances Ha, 2012)—they struggle to act like grownups. The casting of Greta Gerwig developed into an enduring romantic and creative partnership: Gerwig co-wrote and starred in his next two films, Frances Ha and Mistress America (2015). Screenplay: Like the work of one of his favorite filmmakers, Woody Allen, Baumbach’s dramedy combines literate observation (“All the men dress up as children and the children dress as superheroes”) and bitter commentary (“Life is wasted on… people”) with poignant confession (“It’s huge to finally embrace the life you never planned on”).

As of November, the market share for Korean films in the domestic market stood at 55 percent, which indicates that the yearly market share of Korean films will be over 50 percent for the third year in a row. In the international arena as well, Korean films were invited to major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastian and received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It is often said that the current prosperity of Korean cinema is due to the strong commitment and policies introduced by the KIM Dae-joong government in 1999 to promote Korean films.

Usually it’s motivated by the opportunity to hold aloft a small gold-plated statue, but there are plenty memorable occasions where Hollywood’s elite pulled this trope off fantastically. Think Charlize Theron in Monster. Maybe Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine? Or Heath Ledger as Joker. These performances often come to dominate award season. Directors wrenching a truly transformative rendition out of their leads can be the difference between a potential big winner fading into obscurity, or being written into history. The class of 2019 appears particularly full of these turns. There might well be as much intrigue in figuring out which will be remembered, as in watching the performances themselves. ‘Unrecognisable as’ awards could go out to Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I in Mary Queen Of Scots; Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?; Nicole Kidman in Destroyer; Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in Vice. Others of course have been down this road before. Steve Carell has come a long, long way since Michael Scott and he looks tremendous in Beautiful Boy. And Matt Dillon, who we’ll see in The House That Jack Built, has always had a penchant for the slightly off-colour. There’s probably no one more off-colour than Lars von Trier. The ​ ​ ​ ​ 22nd Nantucket Film Festival (NFF) will take place June 21-26, 2017, and celebrates the art of screenwriting and storytelling in cinema and television. The 2017 Screenwriters Tribute Award will be presented to screenwriter/director Tom McCarthy. McCarthy's most recent film Spotlight was awarded the Oscar for Best Picture and won him (and ​ ​ his co-writer Josh Singer) an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. McCarthy began his career as a working actor until he burst onto the filmmaking scene with his critically acclaimed first feature The Station Agent, starring Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson, Bobby Cannavale, and Michelle ​ Williams. McCarthy followed this with the equally acclaimed film The Visitor, for which he won the ​ ​ Spirit Award for Best Director. He also shared story credit with Pete Docter and Bob Peterson on the award-winning animated feature Up. Previous recipients of the Screenwriters Tribute Award ​ ​ include Oliver Stone, David O. Russell, Judd Apatow, Paul Haggis, Aaron Sorkin, Nancy Meyers and Steve Martin, among others.
