From the dust jacket: ‘“Combat over Spain” is one of the few first-hand accounts of the Spanish Civil War, and is the only one published in England to be written from the Nationalist point of view’. Lerma was a bomber and fighter pilot for the duration of the war, flying 278 missions. Aitken, the son of Lord Beaverbrook, joined the RAFVR in 1935, and flew Blenheims and Hurricanes, shooting down 14 enemy aircraft. Dust jacket just creased at the head and tail of the spine. STORIA DEGLI ASSI DELL'AVIAZIONE ITALIANA 1940-1945 di Alberto Rosselli Reggiane RE2001 Il 10 giugno 1940, la Regia Aviazione Italiana disponeva complessivamente di 594 velivoli da caccia- assalto: 177 anziani biplani Fiat CR32 (serie Ter e Quater); 202 più moderni Fiat CR42; 89 caccia monoplani Fiat G50; 77 Macchi MC200; 7 idrovolanti biplani Ro44; 12 Breda Ba 65 e 30 bimotori Breda Ba 88. Di questi pochi aerei gli unici ad essere in grado di svolgere con efficacia il ruolo di intercettatori risultavano essere i caccia delle famiglie Fiat e Macchi. Gran parte dei piloti della Regia Aeronautica che nel corso della guerra si distinsero nel ruolo di cacciatori ebbero quindi modo di iniziare la loro difficile carriera essenzialmente ai comandi di quattro tipi di macchine (i biplani CR32 e CR42 e i monoplani MC200 e G50): aerei che a causa della loro bassa forza motrice (i decrepiti CR32 avevano un motore in linea da 600 hp, mentre i più moderni CR42 ne avevano uno stellare da 840 hp, i G50 uno anch'esso stellare da 840 hp e i MC200 uno, egualmente stellare, ma da 860 hp) e del loro limitato armamento di lancio (tutti e quattro i modelli ebbero in dotazione due mitragliere Breda Safat da 12,7 millimetri disposte nel muso, con eccezione degli ultimi modelli del CR32 e del MC200 che ebbero entrambi montate sulle ali anche due mitragliatrici leggere Breda da 7,7 millimetri), risultavano sostanzialmente inferiori a quasi tutti gli altri caccia messi in campo nel medesimo periodo da Francia e Inghilterra. Nel giugno del 1940, la Francia, sebbene vicina al collasso militare, poteva fare conto su un buon numero di solidi intercettatori Morane-Saulnier MS406 e di più avanzati Dewoitine D520. -

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 2 - SPRING 2003 EDITORIAL Firstly, thanks to those Members who sent me contributions. Don't worry if they aren't included in this issue; they will be used later. Meanwhile, please keep sending in your news, views, suggestions, anecdotes, memories and questions. The Association has got off to a good start with some 250 paid-up Members, 80 of whom attended the Inaugural Meeting on the 8th February, an encouraging turn out. The Programme of Events, below, is also growing nicely with plenty of Members willing to give talks. A particular treat is a visit to the Tangmere Museum, with Neville Duke present, to mark the 50th anniversary of his World Speed Record in Hunter Mk 3 WB188, flown from Tangmere and now on display there. With such enthusiasm being displayed so early in the life of the Association it really looks as if it has a great future - but it all depends on you Members continuing to participate actively and letting the Committee know just what you want. During the celebrated Schneider Trophy races, both R. J. Mitchell and Dr Mario Castoldi would design two of the most impressive aircraft the world has ever seen. Powered by the Rolls-Royce R engine, Mitchell’s Supermarine S 6B would claim the prize for Britain once and for all on The Spitfire’s ancestry can be traced directly to the Supermarine S 6B Schneider Trophy winner of 1931. Creating the seaplane, powered by a Rolls-Royce R engine, provided both Supermarine and Rolls- Royce with a sound grounding for the future development of both the Spitfire and the Merlin engine. This particular example, S1596 (the second S 6B built), broke the world air speed record on 29 September 1931 when Flt Lt George Stainforth reached 407.5mph whilst at the controls. 4 (Crown Copyright) © Osprey Publishing • www.ospreypublishing.com 13 September 1931 when the floatplane achieved a top speed of 380mph.
