Lerma was a bomber and fighter pilot for the duration of the war, flying 278 missions. Tiger James weighed in at 5lbs 12 oz and is growing well! And congratulations too to Denise and Vinny Brown who on 16th January became proud parents of Lucas Charles. Lucas weighed in at 7lb 13oz! Unfortunately illness meant that our President, Air Marshal Cliff Spink and his wife Caroline were unable to join us this year. Cliff was going to tell those present about his Spitfire (pictured below). It is a Mk XVI with a clear view canopy. It was built in 1944 and is very much original, still with the same wings for example. It is powered by a Rolls Royce/Packard Merlin of 1600hp. The aircraft didn‟t see active service but did serve on several RAF squadrons including the RAuxAF. It is painted in the scheme of the 2nd Tactical Air Force which was worn between D Day and the advanced into Germany. -

Squadron Leader Roger Joyce Bushell Roger Bushell is famously remembered as “Big X”, the mastermind and driving force behind what is arguably the most audacious prisoner of war escape of the Second World War. The story of the breakout later became immortalized on film in “The Great Escape”, based on the best-selling book of the same name by fellow prisoner, Paul Brickhill. This has largely overshadowed other aspects of his life, his pre-war flying experiences and his, albeit, short wartime role within the RAF. Roger Joyce Bushell was born in 1910 in South Africa to an English gold- mining engineer. At the age of 10 he was sent to boarding school at Wellington in England. Following this he spent time at Grenoble University, becoming a proficient linguist in French and German before going to Cambridge in 1929. Whilst there, he indulged in his non-academic passions including acting, rugby and skiing. It was also whilst at Cambridge that Bushell took up his other great passion: flying. In 1932 he joined 601 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force as a Pilot Officer. 601 Squadron was otherwise known as “The Millionaires’ Squadron” because most of its members were wealthy young men, paying their way to learn how to fly at the weekend. Many of these men were also fellow skiers, such as Max Aitken, who joined the squadron in 1934 following some encouragement from Bushell. Bushell won his wings in June 1933 and was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer 8 months later. On graduating from Cambridge with a law degree, Bushell was called to the Bar in 1934. -

Large print guide BATTLE OF BRITAIN Ops Block Battle of Britain: Ops Block This Operations Block (Ops Block) was the most important building on the airfield during the Battle of Britain in 1940. From here, Duxford’s fighter squadrons were directed into battle against the Luftwaffe. Inside, you will meet the people who worked in these rooms and helped to win the battle. Begin your visit in the cinema. Step into the cinema to watch a short film about the Battle of Britain. Duration: approximately 4 minutes DUXFORD ROOM Duxford’s Role The Battle of Britain was the first time that the Second World War was experienced by the British population. During the battle, Duxford supported the defence of London. Several squadrons flew out of this airfield. They were part of Fighter Command, which was responsible for defending Britain from the air. To coordinate defence, the Royal Air Force (RAF) divided Britain into geographical ‘groups’, subdivided into ‘sectors.’ Each sector had an airfield known as a ‘sector station’ with an Operations Room (Ops Room) that controlled its aircraft. Information about the location and number of enemy aircraft was communicated directly to each Ops Room. This innovative system became known as the Dowding System, named after its creator, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of Fighter Command. The Dowding System’s success was vital to winning the Battle of Britain. Fighter Command Group Layout August 1940 Duxford was located within ‘G’ sector, which was part of 12 Group. This group was primarily responsible for defending the industrial Midlands and the north of England, but also assisted with the defence of the southeast as required. -

Despite this he was well-respected by his pilots for both his flying and leading abilities, and had served in Palestine and Iraq prior to taking over. He shaped the men for combat – reading every situation and knowing when and how to attack, but also when to back out of a fight – helping them to hone their skills. This couldn’t have been more in contrast to No. 1 Sqn’s sister in 67 Wing, No. 73 Sqn, led by ‘Cobber’ Kain, who the No. 1 Sqn boys thought of as a “split-arse pilot”. -
