Another Start

I'm sure you were busy during the last semester. Each of you would have spent summer vacation in your own way. What have you done during the last two months? It could have felt like it was a long time, or a short period to you, I think. Maybe you went on a trip to soothe your tired mind and body, studied, or spent some time volunteering at the swimming championships held at Chosun University. You didn’t have to achieve a grand goal. If you had a good time, that’s enough. It would have been a rewarding vacation.

The second semester is just getting started. As the saying goes, "the beginning is half.” Let's make another start, even if nothing has been accomplished. Why don’t you spend this semester with Chosun World?

We are preparing for various events starting in September. First of all, we will hold our annual English essay contest. It will help you improve your English composition skills by expressing thoughts in English. Prize money will be also provided, so pay attention to our event. Also during the second semester, we will be recruiting new reporters for Chosun World. Anyone who wants to join us should check our notice! Thank you!

FINA Comes to Chosun University

High diving, a popular event for the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships, was held with great success. It was held from July 22 to 24 at a temporary stadium in the center of the Chosun University campus. Not only locals but also many tourists from all over the world were in attendance. Chosun University sent volunteers and held various side events to ensure the successful hosting of the swimming competition.

During this period, volunteers welcomed international guests well. In particular, the competition's organizing committee signed an agreement with Chosun University's Department of Foreign Language in March to provide interpretation services at the event. As a result, about 300 university student volunteers were deployed to various venues for interpretation services and guidance.

The university also operated a promotional booth from July 22 to 24 while the high diving competition took place. It was manned by three ambassadors and the public relations team from Chosun University. In addition, on the 24th, the Youngshinwon Youth Invitation Event entitled “Dive Into Dream!” was held at Haeoreum Hall.

Further details will be covered at page 6.

THE 18TH FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS GWANGJU 2019 (Dive Into Peace)

The 18th World Championships Gwangju 2019 was held from July 12 to 28 during some very hot summer days. The contest was held in Gwangju and Jeonnam Yeosu. In total, 194 countries participated in the competition, and a total of six competitive events were conducted including swimming, water polo, diving, artistry swimming, open water swimming and high diving. Chosun University hosted the high diving competition from July 22 to 24. With Mudeung Mountain as the backdrop to the stadium, the event got positive reviews from visitors, and the contest was able to be successfully wrapped up.

High diving requires athletes to dive from 27 meters, higher than a 10-floor apartment. High diving, which is a very rare and special sport because there are fewer than 100 athletes competing, was officially adopted as an event by FINA in the 2013 Spain games. High diving is one of the most dangerous sports, and requires athletes with extreme concentration skills. Unlike normal divers who dive into water head first, high divers need to dive into water feet first in order to not experience shocking pain. Even for an experienced athlete, emergencies and unexpected situations can occur if the chest or abdomen of the player hits the water first. Therefore, during this contest, there were always safety spotters looking out for the players’ well-being. They were prepared with first aid equipment for any possible emergency situations.

Unfortunately, there were no Korean participants in high diving. Nevertheless, it was the most popular game in 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019. It was very difficult to get tickets on the spot because among the six games of the championship, tickets for high diving were sold out first. Many spectators who visited the stadium to watch the high diving game but couldn’t get a ticket watched the event from outside the venue.

“It was really a pity that the Korean players didn’t participate,” said an anonymous Chosun University female student who watched the final game in person. “But it was thrilling thing just to watch the players diving from the high diving board. There was nothing but admiration for the players throughout the whole game. Regardless of the results of contest, the sight of all the athletes diving was art itself. It was really fantastic and magnificent. I was so grateful to all players for doing their best. And I really hope that high diving in Korea becomes more advanced and then many Korean players can participate in the next FINA World Championships. I hope that Korea’s swimming community grows further and a good swimming environment will be created in Korea to train the talented players who can shine a light on Korea around the world like Park Tae Hwan.”

It was really a successful 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019. As the student said, we need to make many developments in Korean swimming and it needs a lot of support from the country and the public. Why don’t you take a little more interest in swimming for the development Korea?

International School: Is It Okay?

These days it is hard to live like a frog in a well, and we should keep up with the pace of change in society. If you make an effort to go beyond your own environment and reach out to the world, you will be close to success. In Korea, progress is also being made in the field of education to follow global changes. An example of that is the emergence of international schools. International school is a school where students of various nationalities are taught a different curriculum from general public school curriculum by teachers who are experts in various fields. In the past, special-purpose high schools were popular, but now people are paying attention to international schools. The main purpose of establishing an international school was first to educate the children of local diplomats and international business representatives. Now, many international schools allow regular students admittance. There are many basic conditions. Applicants must submit documents from the school they are attending before being admitted to the international school. A letter of recommendation is also required. The letter of recommendation should include the student's suitability to enter the international school. Applicants should prove their academic excellence. The most important things are passing the entrance examination and English proficiency. Many international schools have their own entrance exams in English. So the key is how well you can speak English. Therefore, private tutoring is needed to meet these entry requirements. Education is moving in a way that does not match the first purpose of establishing an international school. In addition, the curriculum learned in international schools differs from the general public school curriculum. While the general public school curriculum is directed toward only studying, international school curriculum focuses on education as well as a variety of other activities. To enter international school, students must have a variety of skills. This is another war for entrance exams in Korea. There are quite a lot of different international schools in Korea. There are both positive and negative aspects of international schools. On the positive side, international schools can help students cultivate talents to reach the world. However, there are also social concerns that this approach to education highlights the gap between rich and poor in international schools. Schools offering classes that fit the term "international school" are accredited by educational councils and associations, mainly WASC. In Korea, however, it is difficult to formally confirm whether accredited training is still in progress. Meanwhile, more international schools are springing up in this unregulated environment. We need to think about fundamentally improving education. Is it okay for the direction of education to change radically in a society where globalization is taken for granted? It is good to lead society in a more progressive direction, but we should be careful about the pace of change. Jung Seungeun / reporter / [email protected]

Join Hands with the World Chosun University International Cooperation Leading University Project International Cooperation Advancement and Support Project Group

In summer, the days are hot and monsoon rains fall unexpectedly. In order to complete the first semester and move on to the next semester, students in each grade will be preparing for the semester differently. Despite the vacation, Chosun University has been inundated with a number of notable events, including hosting the high diving competition at the World Swimming Championships, Kang's reappointment controversy, and calls for the university to switch from a private to a public institution. Also during the summer, a team from Chosun flew to Mongolia, the country of Genghis Khan, and conducted an international health program at Chosun University. This program is the Chosun University International Cooperation Advancement and Support Project Group. Chosun University was selected as the first a university in the Honam region to be promoted by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Research Foundation, receiving 400 million won in annual support since 2017. For a total of four years, the program promised to help Mongolian nursing departments strengthen their educational capabilities and to provide support for families of terminal cancer patients in the community. Professor Kim Jin-hee, who is in charge of nursing at Chosun University, established a cooperative group with Mongolia's leading private university, Mongolian National University (MNU), which signed an exchange agreement in 2014.

Currently, the group is carrying out its third year project and has three professors, three researchers and a local PM in Mongolia working together to introduce a performance-oriented nursing curriculum to students at Mongolian National University, provide support to strengthen teaching, expand educational infrastructure, and support programs for the internationalization of professors and students. They secured space for educational and practice rooms during the first and second year of the project and developed teaching materials and practical guidelines for students and teachers. Furthermore, they developed a video about basic nursing technology to explain how to practically apply the new curriculum and achieved considerable achievements such as the Korea-Mongolia Joint Academic Conference and Student-centered Mongolian Medical Service.

Chosun University's international cooperation also held programs that focused on leadership, prevention and management of metabolic syndrome, and safe sex from for five nights and six days from March 30 to May 5 in Mongolia’s Dondogobi area. The program was led by eight students from the Chosun University Nursing Department and four students from the Mongolian National University Department, as well as, nursing professors Kim Jin-hee, Yoo Jae-yong and a nursing professor from Mongolian National University. They were praised by local students for their multi-faceted programs such as sex education training and recreational activities. In addition to providing educational and medical services, they visited a local university, university hospital in Mongolia and an international health cooperation institution to strengthen the international partnership between Chosun University and Mongolian National University.

I actually participated in this international health program created by Chosun University's International Cooperation and Advancement College, and I was able to see the results of support from Chosun University during a field trip to the nursing department and practice room at Mongolian National University. Each college at Chosun University is moving toward global programs, and it is the students who should support and participate in such programs. We should all remember that enthusiastic support and attention from students is the driving force behind the school's development.

Growing YouTube Gives Birth to a Variety of Creators

Do you have YouTube on your smart phone? Maybe most people who are reading this article have YouTube, and many of them probably use it a lot. In fact, according to the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and a statistical application, more smartphones are being used than TVs. Also, the amount of time the average YouTube user spends on the site has grown faster than other websites . There are many reasons why YouTube is so popular. Vlogs that allow people to share their daily lives with others are becoming popular, and these days, people often search for ASMR if they cannot sleep well because of stress. Short but interesting videos that can be easily viewed without pressure, such as web dramas and web entertainment are becoming a hit with busy people. It is also used to relive memories by watching old dramas or movies that were popular in the past. YouTube isn't just a site to watch and upload videos. YouTube is a way to show your unique personality. People who gain popularity by starting their own YouTube channels are called YouTube creators. Why don't you join me and meet various creators?

The first creator I will introduce is Park Mak-rye, also known as “Korean Grandma.” As of July 4, she had more than 950,000 subscribers. She works with her granddaughter on YouTube. No one thinks she's too old. That's because age doesn't matter, as she says, when it comes to making your dreams come true. She usually uploads videos about her daily life. Her achievements have been highly praised and have impressed Google and YouTube CEOs. The video I recommend watching is her bibimguksu recipe. This is a video that shows her easy-going personality and long experience cooking. Everybody who's seen this video says it makes them hungry.

The second creator that I will introduce is “Honey Kki.” As of July 4, she had more than 1.8 million subscribers. She mainly uploads cooking videos. The dishes are made in a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. I recommend watching her videos on Korean street food toast and Korean BBQ samgyupsal video. The mere sight of this video will make your mouth water.

The third creator to introduce is “ASMR Soupe.” As of July 4, she had more than 380,000 people subscribers. She makes ASMR from a variety of materials. Her most popular video is Harry Potter ASMR. I'm sure many students have seen it once during test week. She records the sounds of places by herself or creates a background and then combines sounds that match the background. I recommend her Harry Potter ASMR series. As you watch and listen to the video, you'll feel like you've really become a dormitory student at Hogwarts. The last creator to introduce is the “Korean Englishman.” As of July 4, more than 3.2 million people have subscribed to him. He may be more aware of and interested in Korea than we are. This is because his affection for Korea is overflowing so much that it has a good influence on the people around him. He invites famous actors or singers from abroad to introduce them to Korean food and culture, so they can make many good memories in Korea. I recommend his video of Avengers actors trying Korean food.

So far, we've met a variety of creators. Don't you think it is great to show your own individuality through video? There's no limit to how you can express yourself. I hope you don't hesitate to express yourself.

Where to Go in September

Finally, the heat is over and the wind is blowing. The green leaves slowly change to yellow. Yes, September has come. September is another start. We don't want to start classes, but the campus in September is exciting and enjoyable. Lectures have begun. However, our youthful desire for adventure cannot be stopped.

I would like to recommend four domestic festivals and travel destinations in the fall to help college students forget the stressful beginning of school and have a pleasant and happy September. In September, many festivals will be held in , including the Sinchon Beer Festival, Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market and Namdaemun 3GO Night Market. In addition, special night views will be held at Gyeongbok Palace, Changdeok Palace and Changgyeong Palace. It is also recommended to participate in palace events as each palace has various events such as the Gyeongbokgung Palace Suragan Food Tour and the Moonlight Tour at Changdeokgung Palace. And since there is no entrance fee to the palaces if you wear a hanbok, you should wear a pretty hanbok and take a nice picture at a beautiful palace this fall.

Muju is a popular tourist destination in fall. Everyone knows it as a ski resort in Deokyu, but Muju is beautiful even in autumn! Did you ever hear crickets and see fireflies at your grandmother's house on an autumn night when you were young? If you go to the Muju Firefly Festival, you can recall those moments on a country autumn night!

If you want to feel like you’re traveling overseas travel while staying in Korea, I recommend going to Namhae German Village. The German Village has been selected as the “100th Line of Korean Tourism” for the sixth consecutive year. German-style houses line the streets, so you feel like you’re walking through pictures in a storybook. The village boasts beautiful natural scenery along with German cultural experiences, the Paddock Exhibition Hall and the Horticultural Arts Village. Namhae Village also holds Oktoberfest on September 3 through 5. The festival is big and was chosen as a government-designated Culture and Tourism Festival in 2018. I think it would be good to enjoy German culture through the beer festival!

Reed beds come to mind in autumn and of course Suncheonman Bay! Every November, Suncheonman Reed Festival is held in the Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve. It’s a golden opportunity to see the wild reeds in the autumn wind! Suncheon is not only close to Gwangju, but there are many things to see around Suncheon Bay such as Suncheonman Bay National Garden, the set of Suncheon Drama, and more. Take a fun day trip there and have fun!

During the semester, I have to do lots of things, submit lots of assignments, and take lots of exams, so there is little time to do what I want to do. Why don't you take the time to heal and recharge with a short trip and festival when you're tired of your studies? You need to rest to run. Get out there and enjoy your youth!

Canada: Such a Wonderful Country

Hello, seniors and juniors! Did you enjoy your summer vacation and spend it meaningfully? We participated in a short-term language training program with our school and stayed about one month in Vancouver, Canada. When you think of Canada, what comes to mind? Most of you may think of maple leaves, the 2010 Olympics, the Rocky Mountains and maple syrup. In addition to the above, we want to introduce you to things we learned by living in and experiencing Vancouver. There are many differences between Korea and Vancouver. Among them, we will tell you about geographical, social and cultural differences.

Part One: Geographical Differences The first is the difference in their location. As you know, Canada is located in the northern part of North America and Korea is located in East Asia. Furthermore, Korea is to the right of the prime meridian, and Vancouver is on its left. Due to longitudinal differences, Korea’s time zone is ahead of Vancouver’s by 16 hours.

Secondly, there is the difference in population density. Canada is the world’s second-largest country with an area of about 990 million hectares, while the area of Korea is about 10 million hectares and is ranked 107th in the world. Canada is 99 times bigger than Korea. In contrast, Canada has a population of 37 million and Korea has a population of 51 million. So, when we compare their population densities, Korea’s is much higher.

Thirdly, weather and the time of sunsets in summer are different. The average low temperature in Vancouver during July is 13 degrees Celsius and the average high temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. In addition, the air is dry, so people don’t sweat much, and if they are in the shade, it’s cool. On the other hand, summer in Korea is very hot and humid, so it’s easy to sweat. Next is about the time of sunsets in summer. In Vancouver, the sun doesn’t set until 9 p.m. It was one of the most surprising things I experienced.

Part Two: Social and Cultural Differences Next, let’s look at social and cultural aspects of Vancouver. The first is the difference in transportation. The most common means of transportation in Vancouver are the Sky Train, SeaBus, and city bus. The Sky Train is a streetcar that looks similar to Korea’s subway and is driven automatically without a driver. The Sea Bus is a passenger-only ferry service and crosses Burrard Inlet to connect the cities of Vancouver and North Vancouver.

With regard to buses, there were also many differences. In Korea, bus drivers try to fill the bus with as many people as possible, but bus drivers in Vancouver seem to receive passengers to the point where people feel comfortable. In addition, it is hard to get on a bus in Korea if a person has a bicycle, but we were surprised that there is a place on Vancouver buses where people can put their bicycles. And, whereas in Korea it is common to press a bell when a passenger wants to get off the bus, in Vancouver passengers pull strings.

Next is tipping culture and sales tax, which are hard to find in Korea. In North America, it is common for people to tip when they receive service. There is no fixed amount for tips, but in general, people pay between 15 and 20 percent of the payment. In Canada, in addition to tips, people have to pay a sales tax when they buy things. In British Columbia, which includes Vancouver, 12% of the price of goods is taxed.

Part Three: Recommendation of Attractions Canada has lots of tourist attractions where we can see beautiful nature. One of the most popular spots to see nature is the Canadian Parliament building on Victoria Island. That building is so gorgeous that many people take plenty of photos in front of it. If you buy a ticket to get in, you can go inside of it and get a tour. Fisherman's Wharf is where shops and houses are along a wooden boardwalk that follows a river. Those buildings are really colorful and impressive. Butchart Garden has various kinds of flowers where you can rest and enjoy the landscape while you are walking around. If you want to go to Victoria Island, you have to take a ferry to get there. It takes more than three hours to get to Victoria Island, so we recommend you spend two days on the island. If you do so, you can also see the nightscape of Parliament.

In addition, you can enjoy many gardens in Vancouver. One of them is VanDusen Botanical Garden. There you can enjoy lots of things such as garden mazes and a big red chair for taking pictures. Another interesting garden is Queen Elizabeth Park, which is free, really large and has a nice view of nature. You can also enjoy several beaches such as Ambleside Park, English Bay, Kitsilano Beach, and Wreck Beach. Wreck Beach is the most unique beach because it is a kind of nude beach and is nearby UBC. Not everyone is nude, so you don't have to be nude.

Grouse Mountain is called “the peak” of Vancouver, and is in North Vancouver. The mountain is 1250 meters high which is 63 meters higher than Mudeung Mountain. You can climb the mountain or take a cable car, which takes five to ten minutes to get the top. The mountain is so steep that there is a sign near the top of the mountain that warns climbers not to travel beyond that point because it is dangerous. You can check the estimated time for hiking trails. In fact, many people do that activity. When you get to the top of the mountain, you can do lots of things. You can pay for a helicopter ride to look around the mountain, see two grizzly bears, and watch lots of shows such as the Birds In Motion demonstration and Lumberjack Show.

Joffree Lake is three hours away from Vancouver. You can see sudden changes of weather. The lake is located in a nature preserve, so there is nothing nearby, not even a restaurant. If you go there, you can see three turquoise lakes, which makes you calm and relaxed.

Capilano Cliff is another popular attraction in North Vancouver. It has well-maintained trails, so it is easy to walk around. There is a long suspension bridge where you can have a unique experience.

Part Four: Inconveniences For such a beautiful country, there are some negative things about Canada. In Canada, you can see more homeless people than in Korea. At first, we thought those people had no job. However, we got to know that some of them may have more than two part-time jobs, but they can't rent apartments because of the high price. The extremely high price of housing is one of Vancouver's problems. Furthermore, there is still racial discrimination. While we were in Canada for language study abroad, more than four people said they were racially discriminated against. In spite of this, there were still lots of things were enjoyed about Canada. If you want to experience nature and enhance your English skills, we really recommend that you go to Canada. It will be a very valuable and memorable time for you.

In 1982, Korean professional baseball was founded with six clubs. The birth of pro baseball in Korea is also related to our city of Gwangju. After the 1980 pro-democracy movement in Gwangju, baseball was a part of Chun Doo-hwan administration’s 3S policy (screen, sex, and sports) initiated to divert the public's political attention away from the protests and atrocities. Starting this way, Korean professional baseball, known as the KBO league, has become a popular sport in the country. The sport has even led to a cheering culture. The Protests in Hong Kong, Explained

In 2019, the world is focused on East Asian news. North Korea is still ambiguous about giving up nuclear weapons, and Japan and have started to engage in a trade war. Also, as Chinese influence has started to expand, China has had big and small conflicts with several countries near its border. Outside of the North Korean threat to a peaceful world, one of the biggest international news stories is Hong Kong. Hong Kong has had several conflicts with China in the past, but the atmosphere of the conflict this year is quite different from the earlier ones. While many South Korean citizens are completely caught up in Japanese economic sanctions, the growing movement in Hong Kong is the main issue in Asia.

Hong Kong’s protests started on June 9, the last day of a Hong Kong holiday. The protests were held to block the passage of a bill that would allow the extradition of Hong Kong citizens to mainland China. The bill was first proposed in February of this year due to the case of a murder that took place in Taiwan. However, since there was no treaty allowing extradition and arrests between Taiwan and Hong Kong, there was no way to detain the murderer. China does not recognize Taiwanese sovereignty, so in order to punish those criminals, mainland China proposed this amendment to the law. The point is, the bill that the Chinese government ultimately wants to pass will persecute people who are involved in political activism. There are many activists in Hong Kong who insist that China has been dominating the sovereignty of Hong Kong and of course, those protesters are a nuisance to China.

About 1 million people gathered on the first day of demonstrations and more than 2 million people wearing black clothes are estimated to have gathered on June 16. Considering Hong Kong has a population of 7.4 million, those crowds were excessively large. Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, apologized for the chaos, but she also stated there would be no withdrawal of the bill. On July 1, demonstrators successfully stormed the parliament building and waved Hong Kong and UK flags. Carrie Lam declared the bill dead on July 9. The expression – death – seemed vague and lacking authority, so protesters did not accept Lam’s proclamation. On July 21, unidentified people wearing white shirts recklessly committed acts of violence against protesters. The police didn’t interfere. Even some gangsters passed by the police. It is suspected that those people were backed by the Chinese Communist Party.

The ongoing protest is also related to the independence of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is partially autonomous under the “one country, two systems” policy instated after its return to China in 1997. Hong Kong has its own laws and democratic political system, but more than half of the lawmakers in parliament are friendly to China. Mainland Chinese money is slowly transforming Hong Kong’s media outlets. It is thought that China wants to control Hong Kong’s government while benefiting from the economic freedom that Hong Kong enjoys as financial Asian hub. These series of protests have forced several financial firms to flee to Singapore, another safe financial hub in Asia. Because South Koreans have seen success with two democratic revolutions, including the revision of the constitution in 1987 and the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye in 2017, many citizens sincerely support the protests in Hong Kong for freedom.

Kim Jae Wan Department of Chinese Culture : sophomore < How Do You Like My Jacket?> Whenever I went to school, I didn’t pay much attention to other department students before. I can distinguish them now by this article. I think all the contents and arrangements in this issue were good.

Kim Seon Joon Department of Computer Statistics : sophomore The article related to the Gwangju Job Fair was the most impressive. I thought of the experience that I visited this fair. It was a meaningful time for me that it gave so many students a job description and an opportunity to join. This issue was nice to explain the various contents well. It was very informative to get a lot of information about things that I didn't know, about e Sport, as well as articles related to this job fair. I also felt it is very important to see around me and look closely at school news. In the next issue, I would like you to deal with export regulations in Japan.

Seo Ji Su Department of Physics : sophomore < Welcome to Yangnim-dong!> I read it carefully because I was interested in Yanglim-dong, since it was about the villiage I visited once before. I had never thought exactly about what was in Yanglim- dong because I had just been to a cafe with my friend and a restaurant. That was all for the first visit to Yangnim-dong. By the way, I learned the origin and features about the Yangrim Penguin Village and the History and Culture Village. I also realized that the village was full of historical values after learning that it had been reborn with the will and sincerity of the people. The next time I have a change to visit this place, I’ll look around it in a new sight in the future. In the next issue, I hope you to write articles about good attractions and festivals to visit in September.

Lee Hyo Won Department of English and Literature : junior < How Do You Like My Jacket?> I saw posted pictures of jackets in each college. Before, I didn't know which department student wears particular jackets, but I've solved my question. It was a really interesting article. I also want you to explain about the swimming championships that will be held in the playground of Chosun University.
