Another Start <Editorial> Lee Eun-Sol / Editor-in-Chief / [email protected] Another Start I'm sure you were busy during the last semester. Each of you would have spent summer vacation in your own way. What have you done during the last two months? It could have felt like it was a long time, or a short period to you, I think. Maybe you went on a trip to soothe your tired mind and body, studied, or spent some time volunteering at the swimming championships held at Chosun University. You didn’t have to achieve a grand goal. If you had a good time, that’s enough. It would have been a rewarding vacation. The second semester is just getting started. As the saying goes, "the beginning is half.” Let's make another start, even if nothing has been accomplished. Why don’t you spend this semester with Chosun World? We are preparing for various events starting in September. First of all, we will hold our annual English essay contest. It will help you improve your English composition skills by expressing thoughts in English. Prize money will be also provided, so pay attention to our event. Also during the second semester, we will be recruiting new reporters for Chosun World. Anyone who wants to join us should check our notice! Thank you! <Campus News> Lee Eun-Sol / Editor-in-Chief / [email protected] FINA Comes to Chosun University High diving, a popular event for the 2019 Gwangju World Swimming Championships, was held with great success. It was held from July 22 to 24 at a temporary stadium in the center of the Chosun University campus. Not only locals but also many tourists from all over the world were in attendance. Chosun University sent volunteers and held various side events to ensure the successful hosting of the swimming competition. During this period, volunteers welcomed international guests well. In particular, the competition's organizing committee signed an agreement with Chosun University's Department of Foreign Language in March to provide interpretation services at the event. As a result, about 300 university student volunteers were deployed to various venues for interpretation services and guidance. The university also operated a promotional booth from July 22 to 24 while the high diving competition took place. It was manned by three ambassadors and the public relations team from Chosun University. In addition, on the 24th, the Youngshinwon Youth Invitation Event entitled “Dive Into Dream!” was held at Haeoreum Hall. Further details will be covered at page 6. <Campus News> Lee Eun-Sol / Editor-in-Chief / [email protected] Chosun University Held ASEAN Student Presentation A presentation and closing ceremony for the invited students of ASEAN were held at Chosun University from August 12 to 13. These students were chosen for their excellence in science and technology. The training program was organized by the National Institute of International Education of the Ministry of Education, which invited outstanding science and engineering college students from ASEAN countries to Korea. It was held to let the students experience and learn more about science and engineering studies and culture. A presentation of research results was held on the fourth floor of Seoseok Hall at Chosun University at 2:30 p.m. on August 12. A closing ceremony was held at the same venue at 11:30 a.m. the next day, August 13. The presentation was attended by more than 220 participants, including a total of 36 teams from six universities, 197 trainees and university officials. Kim Young-gon, president of the National Institute of International Education, participated in the presentation of the research results and gave awards for outstanding research results. The International Cooperation Team of Chosun University's Ministry of Foreign Cooperation hosted the opening ceremony entitled “Invited Training for Students of Excellence in Science and Engineering of ASEAN Countries” on the second floor of the International Pavilion on July 11. The training was held until August 14, and a total of 38 students from eight Southeast Asian countries participated in the event. The event is aimed at expanding exchanges of students between ASEAN countries and friendship between Korean universities and universities from Southeast Asian countries. If this kind of exchange increases, they will have more to learn from each other. <Hot Issue> Yang Si-Eun / reporter / [email protected] THE 18TH FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS GWANGJU 2019 (Dive Into Peace) The 18th World Championships Gwangju 2019 was held from July 12 to 28 during some very hot summer days. The contest was held in Gwangju and Jeonnam Yeosu. In total, 194 countries participated in the competition, and a total of six competitive events were conducted including swimming, water polo, diving, artistry swimming, open water swimming and high diving. Chosun University hosted the high diving competition from July 22 to 24. With Mudeung Mountain as the backdrop to the stadium, the event got positive reviews from visitors, and the contest was able to be successfully wrapped up. High diving requires athletes to dive from 27 meters, higher than a 10-floor apartment. High diving, which is a very rare and special sport because there are fewer than 100 athletes competing, was officially adopted as an event by FINA in the 2013 Spain games. High diving is one of the most dangerous sports, and requires athletes with extreme concentration skills. Unlike normal divers who dive into water head first, high divers need to dive into water feet first in order to not experience shocking pain. Even for an experienced athlete, emergencies and unexpected situations can occur if the chest or abdomen of the player hits the water first. Therefore, during this contest, there were always safety spotters looking out for the players’ well-being. They were prepared with first aid equipment for any possible emergency situations. Unfortunately, there were no Korean participants in high diving. Nevertheless, it was the most popular game in 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019. It was very difficult to get tickets on the spot because among the six games of the championship, tickets for high diving were sold out first. Many spectators who visited the stadium to watch the high diving game but couldn’t get a ticket watched the event from outside the venue. “It was really a pity that the Korean players didn’t participate,” said an anonymous Chosun University female student who watched the final game in person. “But it was thrilling thing just to watch the players diving from the high diving board. There was nothing but admiration for the players throughout the whole game. Regardless of the results of contest, the sight of all the athletes diving was art itself. It was really fantastic and magnificent. I was so grateful to all players for doing their best. And I really hope that high diving in Korea becomes more advanced and then many Korean players can participate in the next FINA World Championships. I hope that Korea’s swimming community grows further and a good swimming environment will be created in Korea to train the talented players who can shine a light on Korea around the world like Park Tae Hwan.” It was really a successful 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019. As the student said, we need to make many developments in Korean swimming and it needs a lot of support from the country and the public. Why don’t you take a little more interest in swimming for the development Korea? <Cover Story> Sun Min-Jeong / reporter / [email protected] International School: Is It Okay? These days it is hard to live like a frog in a well, and we should keep up with the pace of change in society. If you make an effort to go beyond your own environment and reach out to the world, you will be close to success. In Korea, progress is also being made in the field of education to follow global changes. An example of that is the emergence of international schools. International school is a school where students of various nationalities are taught a different curriculum from general public school curriculum by teachers who are experts in various fields. In the past, special-purpose high schools were popular, but now people are paying attention to international schools. The main purpose of establishing an international school was first to educate the children of local diplomats and international business representatives. Now, many international schools allow regular students admittance. There are many basic conditions. Applicants must submit documents from the school they are attending before being admitted to the international school. A letter of recommendation is also required. The letter of recommendation should include the student's suitability to enter the international school. Applicants should prove their academic excellence. The most important things are passing the entrance examination and English proficiency. Many international schools have their own entrance exams in English. So the key is how well you can speak English. Therefore, private tutoring is needed to meet these entry requirements. Education is moving in a way that does not match the first purpose of establishing an international school. In addition, the curriculum learned in international schools differs from the general public school curriculum. While the general public school curriculum is directed toward only studying, international school curriculum focuses on education as well as a variety of other activities. To enter international school, students must have a variety of skills. This is another war for entrance exams in Korea. There are quite a lot of different international schools in Korea. There are both positive and negative aspects of international schools. On the positive side, international schools can help students cultivate talents to reach the world.

In 1985, the Sammi Superstars became known as the Cheongbo Pintos. The next year, 1986, saw some major changes, with the OB Bears moving from Daejeon to share the Seoul's Jamsil Baseball Stadium with MBC Chungyong in Seoul. A new franchise, the Binggrae Eagles, joined to replace vacancy of Daejeon by OB's moving and expanding the league to seven franchises. 1988 saw the Cheongbo Pintos change ownership again, becoming the Pacific Dolphins. In 1990, MBC Chungyong became the LG Twins and an eighth franchise was added, the Ssangbangwool Raiders who represented the Jeollabuk-do region. There was little change in the 90's except for a few major sponsors: 1993 saw the Binggrae Eagles become the Hanwha Eagles, in 1995 the Pacific Dolphins became the Hyundai Unicorns and the OB Bears in 1999 became the Doosan Bears. Bigger changes were affected in 2000 when the Hyundai Unicorns moved from Incheon to Suwon, and a new franchise, the SK Wyverns took their place in Incheon. The Ssangbangwool Raiders became defunct. In 2001, the Haitai Tigers became the Kia Tigers. In 2008, the Hyundai Unicorns franchise was sold, renamed the Woori Heroes and moved to Mok-dong in Seoul, after a disappointing season in 2007 both on and off the field.

Differently from the original TTP, in which the total travel distance of all the participants is the objective function to minimize, we instead seek to maximize the fairness of the round robin tournament schedule of the Korean Baseball League. The standard deviation of the travel distances of teams is defined as the energy function, and the Metropolis Monte-Carlo method combined with the simulated annealing technique is applied to find the ground state configuration. The resulting tournament schedule is found to satisfy all the constraint rules set by the Korean Baseball Organization, but with drastically increased fairness in traveling distances. Abstract Despite the growing popularity of professional baseball in South Korea, academic literature lacks much quantitative analysis of its fans. The main purposes of this current study were two-fold. Firstly, it was to identify if fan attitudes and expenditures are associated with and different by demographic variables. Secondly, it was to find out if fan attitudes and expenditure positively predict and explain the variance of future propensity to spend on products and service. A total of 1612 fans who attended Korean baseball games voluntarily participated in this study. The survey questionnaire consists of five sections of demographics information, sport fandom, satisfaction of social media service, satisfaction of the baseball stadium, and future propensity to spend on products and service at the ballparks. An exploratory analysis found that fan attitudes and expenditures differed by demographic variables (e.g., gender, education, age). Second, fan attitudes about the baseball team, satisfaction with baseball stadium, satisfaction with team media social media services, and current venue expenditures proved to bepositive predictors of future propensity to spend on team products and service (FPSPS).
