The Baptist Church was nearest to where we lived; I could see it from my bedroom window. The Church of England church was about a mile away. I went to Nursery School at the Baptist Church; Sunday School at the C of E; Boys’ Brigade at the Baptist; Choir at the C of E; Youth Club at the Baptist; then a bigger Youth Club at the C of E. What eventually drew me to settle in the Church of England was the parish structure; the fact that each local parish church is here for everyone in that parish, regardless of whether people have a strong faith or not. I still find this an attractive dimension to my ministry. Here in the Two Valleys there are no other worshipping denominations, so the only active churches are from the C of E. This places an extra responsibility on us to ensure every person feels welcome in our churches and can feel they belong in some way; whether from a Baptist, Methodist, Roman Catholic or agnostic background. I would hope we could also help those of other faiths to feel welcome as well, even if we may not share quite the same beliefs. With this in mind, it’s good to be reminded that the pastoral ministry our local C of E churches can offer extends to anyone in our parishes who would value it. This means we can come to you when you may need that bit of extra support (even if you are someone who does not attend church – no one need feel guilty about this). What can we offer? Most often in our relatively small parishes, it can be the local vicar who makes these more specialized ministry visits, but it may also be other authorized lay people who can take the presence of the church out into the community. If you are in Hospital I can try and visit. Someone would need to let me know, as often people are in and out of hospital quite quickly these days and I may not get to hear about it. I can visit anyone at home who may be poorly, recently bereaved, or in another kind of pastoral4 need, and offer a listening ear and prayers of support. I can bring Holy Communion to those at home who may be incapacitated. It can be a great comfort to still feel connected to the wider Christian family by continuing to receive Communion. Sometimes others can come along as well, so that people can still feel connected to their local congregation. I can offer prayers of Blessing over a new House or a new Job and set of circumstances. I do try to visit former residents who are in local Care Homes whenever I can. I still find it a huge privilege to live in rural communities such as these and to offer these ministries to any who would welcome them. The point being made is that we are here for everyone in our parishes and we want to continue offering this pastoral care and support wherever it may be needed. Please don’t hesitate to contact either me or your other key parish contacts (See p. 20 of the Magazine) if you have any kind of need and would value some support. • Folk Song in Cumbria: a Distinctive Regional
FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one.

TWO VALLEYS PARISH NEWS www.crosthwaiteandlyth.co.uk/twovalleys Serving the parishes of Cartmel Fell, Crook, Crosthwaite, Helsington, Underbarrow, Winster, & Witherslack April 2018 70p Holme Crag Garden Party INTRIGUINGLY beautiful gardens which took over 30 years to nurture from rock and rugged land are open on Sunday, May 20th in Witherslack. Featured in Tim Longville’s acclaimed “Gardens of the Lake District”, Holme Crag is opening its gates as a fund-raiser for St. Paul’s Parish Church. Appearing on television, loved my many who have visited the magical place, the garden is testimony to the late Jack Watson’s vision of ‘merely cultivating ecology’. A magnet for birds, wild animals and insects, this where a lovely, untamed landscape meets decades of graft, and Jack's passion for planting, to create a unique and beguiling spectacle. By late spring, pond-side astilbes and hostas may be pushing through, rhododendrons still flowering and Holme Crag’s Candelabra primulas in their first ascent. Many of the plants and trees were established to encourage wildlife and the garden is noted for a rich variety of birds. Please join us for cream teas, raffles, plants, cakes, white elephant, a selection of stalls and, of course, the garden exploration. Running from 2 to 5pm, entrance is £3, children free. Please follow parking guidelines. • Jubilee Digest Briefing Note for Cartmel and Furness
Furness Peninsula Department of History, Lancaster University Victoria County History: Cumbria Project ‘Jubilee Digests’ Briefing Note for Furness Peninsula In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Queen has decided to re-dedicate the VCH. To mark this occasion, we aim to have produced a set of historical data for every community in Cumbria by the end of 2012. These summaries, which we are calling ‘Jubilee Digests’, will be posted on the Cumbria County History Trust’s website where they will form an important resource as a quick reference guide for all interested in the county’s history. We hope that all VCH volunteers will wish to get involved and to contribute to this. What we need volunteers to do is gather a set of historical facts for each of the places for which separate VCH articles will eventually be written: that’s around 315 parishes/townships in Cumberland and Westmorland, a further 30 in Furness and Cartmel, together with three more for Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent. The data included in the digests, which will be essential to writing future VCH parish/township articles, will be gathered from a limited set of specified sources. In this way, the Digests will build on the substantial progress volunteers have already made during 2011 in gathering specific information about institutions in parishes and townships throughout Cumberland and Westmorland. As with all VCH work, high standards of accuracy and systematic research are vital. Each ‘Jubilee Digest’ will contain the following and will cover a community’s history from the earliest times to the present day: Name of place: status (i.e.

In 2008 English Heritage published its first register of Heritage at Risk – a region-by-region list of all the Grade I and II* listed buildings (and Grade II listed buildings in London), structural scheduled monuments, registered battlefields and protected wreck sites in England known to be ‘at risk’.
