Michael Woodcock 3 The constant and fundamental desire God has for all of us A LETTER FROM MICHAEL WOODCOCK Dear friends, We don‘t like having to wait, do we? Everything these days is designed to make life work as quickly as possible, so when it doesn‘t, we don‘t like it. Which is the shortest queue at the supermarket, and it turns out to be the wrong one. All the other lanes are moving faster on the motorway; shall I swap? If only I‘d chosen the other lane, now I‘ve got to wait. ―Buy now, pay later‖….. Mmm that sounds appealing…… Online shopping allows us to buy what we want when we want, and we can grow incredibly frustrated if it doesn‘t arrive the next day when they said it would. Food is no longer seasonal… we no longer have to wait. But ―good things come to those who wait‖, don‘t they? Perhaps waiting is a bit counter- cultural these days, but it might still be good for us. If we never learn patience and the rewards of waiting, we can slip into a life of superficiality, that is only ever satisfied if everything happens now, immediately. The Story of Exodus is a lesson in waiting. It‘s how God led the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. They had to get from Egypt to Judah on foot; a journey that might have taken a week or so. It took them forty years, a whole generation! Not because they kept losing their way, but because God wanted them to wait. During that time of waiting he was forming them, molding them into a People who would be more ready for what lay ahead of them. Have we lost the art of patience? Do we lose something in our modern-day obsession with immediacy? Waiting might feel frustrating, but sometimes it can be a blessing as we are protected from rushing into things, making rash decisions, avoiding regret. We may also find that we learn to appreciate that bit more what we have been waiting for. O gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate upon you, and a life to proclaim you, through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord. St. Benedict yours in friendship, Rev. Michael Woodcock, The Vicarage, Crosthwaite. 4 Wedding 22nd February Gavin Sharpe and Lauren Thorburn at St. Catherine‘s, Crook Funerals 27th February John Williams (79) Funeral & Burial at St. Paul‘s, Witherslack 6th March Pauline Mills (97) Funeral & Burial at St. Paul‘s, Witherslack 14th March Raymond Jackson (81) Funeral Service at Beetham Crematorium CALLING ALL VILLAGES CELEBRATIONS at ALL SAINTS Between Easter and the autumn we will be celebrating 150 years of the present church building dedicated to All Saints, and at least 450 years of churches on the site in Underbarrow.
