The constant and fundamental desire God has for all of us A LETTER FROM MICHAEL WOODCOCK

Dear friends,

We don‘t like having to wait, do we? Everything these days is designed to make life work as quickly as possible, so when it doesn‘t, we don‘t like it. Which is the shortest queue at the supermarket, and it turns out to be the wrong one. All the other lanes are moving faster on the motorway; shall I swap? If only I‘d chosen the other lane, now I‘ve got to wait. ―Buy now, pay later‖….. Mmm that sounds appealing……

Online shopping allows us to buy what we want when we want, and we can grow incredibly frustrated if it doesn‘t arrive the next day when they said it would. Food is no longer seasonal… we no longer have to wait.

But ―good things come to those who wait‖, don‘t they? Perhaps waiting is a bit counter- cultural these days, but it might still be good for us. If we never learn patience and the rewards of waiting, we can slip into a life of superficiality, that is only ever satisfied if everything happens now, immediately.

The Story of Exodus is a lesson in waiting. It‘s how God led the Hebrew people out of slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land. They had to get from Egypt to Judah on foot; a journey that might have taken a week or so. It took them forty years, a whole generation! Not because they kept losing their way, but because God wanted them to wait. During that time of waiting he was forming them, molding them into a People who would be more ready for what lay ahead of them.

Have we lost the art of patience? Do we lose something in our modern-day obsession with immediacy? Waiting might feel frustrating, but sometimes it can be a blessing as we are protected from rushing into things, making rash decisions, avoiding regret. We may also find that we learn to appreciate that bit more what we have been waiting for.

O gracious and holy Father, give us wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate upon you, and a life to proclaim you, through the power of the Spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord. St. Benedict

yours in friendship, Rev. Michael Woodcock, The Vicarage, Crosthwaite.

Underbarrow Plant Stall Have you got Gaps in your Borders? Visit my Plant Stall in Thorns Lane Underbarrow in Aid of The Winterberg Trust School in Rural South Africa As some of you will know I set up a plant stall at my garden gate last summer at Rockyfield, Thorns Lane, Underbarrow to raise money for the Winterberg Trust Community School http://winterbergschool.org in a remote and rural part of Eastern Cape. The stall is running again and there will be new plants on the stall throughout the growing season. About the Winterberg Trust School My daughter Amy, who is the Chair of the Trustees has written an article about the school; you can read the highlights below or click the link to see the whole article: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/help-build-better-future-children-rural-south- africa-bryant-curl-?articleId=6309344055016898561 “The Winterberg region is a remote and rural part of South Africa's Eastern Cape. Historically, some of the most disadvantaged people in South African society, those with the least prospects, were rural farm workers’ children in remote and isolated areas. The Winterberg farmers set up an independent Trust and a School to significantly improve the prospects of farm workers’ children. I have been amazed at the positive impact that the Winterberg School Trust has had on the lives of the poorest children that live here. The school offers classes for up to 9 years old, serving 65 pupils. That’s over 95% of the farm workers’ children of suitable age. The school offers young children an alternative to attending a school in town, where they would need to stay away from home or travel up to 80km each day on dangerous dirt roads. The school enables families to stay together, so providing children with a safe environment at home and at school and provides a quality education to improve the opportunities open to the underprivileged children in the community. The school costs the equivalent of £110,000 each year to run. As an independent charitable school, we have to raise this money each year. We are supported by a combination of corporates, charities and individuals and as a community we are doing all we can to continue this amazing project." Despite all these efforts there is an ongoing shortfall to finance the school, so I decided I could raise a modest amount by selling plants to support this good cause. So thank you for your support and do call by at Rockyfield to see what is on the stall. And if you would like to have a look around the garden to spot varieties that you would like, please do give me a call on  07789 515 868.

Mellitus: First Bishop of London

In the month when Easter falls I usually write on some aspect of Holy Week or Easter. This year I‘m departing from custom in writing instead about Mellitus, the first Bishop of London, who is commemorated, as you will see, from the Calendar of Common Worship, on 24th April. My particular prompt for writing about him this year was the fact that we are coming up to the anniversary of Sarah Mullaley‘s consecration as the first female Bishop of London, and that made me think of Mellitus as London‘s original ‗first‘. Her cathedral is, of course, St Paul‘s, the dedication of the London cathedral which goes back to the time of Mellitus in the early seventh century.

When Pope Gregory the Great sent a mission to convert the old Roman province of Britannia in 597, it was headed by Augustine, who established his headquarters in Canterbury, near where he first landed. Gregory intended that there should be two archbishoprics, one in London, and one in York, reflecting the importance of these two towns when Britannia was a unified Roman province — information that was still known in Rome in Gregory‘s day. What he did not know, however, was that sixth-century ‗Britannia‘ () was no longer organised as a single entity but was made up of several small kingdoms, which of course complicated the mission enormously .An archbishopric was eventually established in York in the 730s, in the Kingdom of Northumbria (although there were bishops in the kingdom before that). But the archbishopric in the south remains to this day in Canterbury, honouring what local circumstances brought about under Augustine. Conversion of the people and the setting up of churches needed royal support. London was often contested territory between the various kingdoms in the south -east, but Canterbury was at the heart of the Kingdom of Kent, where Augustine received the necessary support to establish his mission.

As he and the monks who came with him laboured on, Augustine maintained a close correspondence with Pope Gregory, and in 601 Gregory sent reinforcements. We know the names of several in this second wave of Roman missionaries: Mellitus was one of them. In 604, the year that Augustine died, Mellitus was consecrated as the first bishop of the East Saxons, a kingdom lying just to the north of the Kingdom of Kent. There, without a fixed see, he set about extending the conversion. Later, when good progress had been made, the King of Kent, the most powerful king in the area at the time, built a church for Mellitus in London. It was dedicated to St Paul. However, when the king died in 616, Mellitus lost his protection and he and Bishop Justus of Rochester, who had also arrived in England in 601 as a member of the second wave of missionaries, withdrew to Gaul, leaving only Laurentius - a member of Augustine‘s original party of monks, and his successor as Archbishop - in charge of the English church. Fortunately Laurentius was able to win over the new king to Christianity, and so Mellitus and Justus returned. Justus went back to Rochester, but the Londoners refused to receive Mellitus, perhaps because they resented the interference of the King of Kent. However, the question of what should become of Mellitus was quickly resolved: Laurentius died, on 2nd February 619, and Mellitus became the third Archbishop of Canterbury. He died on 24th April 624. CROSTHWAITE & LYTH PARISH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Following the open Parish meeting on 5th September 2018 where a motion was passed to develop a Neighbourhood Plan the Parish Council appointed a Steering Group to develop the Plan. WHY DO WE NEED ONE? District Council and the National Park are preparing proposals for future housing, employment and conservation in our Parish as part of a larger County- wide study. In response, the Parish has voted to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan which will help guide future development decisions. A Neighbourhood Plan is a way of helping local communities, like ours, to influence the planning in the area which we live and work. It can be used to:  Develop a shared vision for our neighbourhood.  Choose where new homes, shops, employment opportunities, and other development could be built and what they might look like.  Identify and protect important local green spaces. While the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group guide the process, it is important that Residents of the Parish are consulted and that their views and opinions are included. WHAT NEXT? In the coming weeks a document will be dropping through your letter box. This is the first stage of the process of developing a shared future vision for the Parish. To stimulate your ideas the Steering Group have suggested three possible ways the Parish could develop but we think everyone will have their own ideas and variations. Please read and respond to this document so the Steering Group are able to build a shared Community Vision for the Parish. This is only the first stage of the process and your views will help shape the Neighbourhood Plan and the future of our Parish for many years to come.

CROSTHWAITE & LYTH JUBILEE WOOD I wish to make a correction to the Crosthwaite section of the Community News in the 7th March edition of the Westmorland Gazette. The trees in the Jubilee Wood were planted by the villagers and not by me, but I arranged the project and have looked after the wood since then. The Woodland Trust gifted the trees to the village. John Walker and John Grindley put the posts in prior to our joint planting day. I was very grateful to everyone who helped to make that day a great success. St. Paul‘s church restoration update We held a recent meeting with our Architects who are in the process of finalising a Schedule of Works for ―Phase 1‖ of our restoration project, which will include all the repairs needed for the Tower. We will then need to gain planning permission from the Diocese (known as a Faculty) and will soon be seeking to raise the funds needed (we have around £30,000, but will need to raise well over £100,000 to be able to complete Phase 1). A longer term aspiration of the PCC is to rebuild the present cellar boiler house at ground level (to match the existing vestry extension) to accommodate a new boiler, small kitchen and disabled toilet facility to make the church much more user friendly, and it would make sense to undertake such an extension in conjunction with the tower restoration if adequate funds could be raised in time. We will be finding a specialist Fund-raising company to help us with this. We hope that over the next few weeks and months the preparations for this major restoration will begin to gain momentum. If the Tower is to be prepared for re-rendering in lime mortar, then it is best done in the Spring and then given a few weeks to dry out before the render is applied in the Summer. This means we are looking at 2020 to do this work, as we will need to have raised the money to pay for it before then. We will endeavour to keep the parish informed of this progress and will be seeking further support as time goes by. As St. Paul‘s church will be 350 years old in 2021, we have the aim to have completed Phase 1 of our restoration by the end of 2020 in time for this momentous anniversary. There is a growing determination across the village that we will succeed in this project. 16

INSTITUTES

CARTMEL FELL WI We had an enjoyable meeting at Hare Hill. Steve Cottam (with his wife Dawn) described their trip on a Royal Ensign Motor bike from Kathmandu to Kendal. They were raising funds for a school they support in Nepal. It involved 12 hours on a bike which seemed quite challenging to many of us! They made many friends along the way (8000 miles+). They still go out every year with the money they have raised for the school. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, April 3rd at 7.30pm back in the Parish hall. The speaker is Margaret Watkins on yesterday‘s fashion memorabilia. Guests most welcome.

BRIGSTEER WI Sixteen members and several guests came along to our March Open Meeting, when fellow Brigsteer resident Alan Davies told us all about the restoration of the Coniston Hydro Electric Scheme during his time at Gilkes. Alan told us there are many HEP schemes in the Lake District but like this one, they are completely unobtrusive. He showed us many slides before and after the scheme was commissioned by the local landowner, and told how it produces enough electricity per day to power around 315 homes, and takes around ten years for the investment to be repaid. He then showed us some old photos from the Gilkes plant when the canal came to the centre of Kendal. Penny and Dorothy are once again taking part in the Reading Aloud competition at on Monday - good luck ladies! Sue Harrison had written to thank our volunteers who baked cupcakes for her very successful charity fundraising Valentines evening where they raised over £300 for the village hall and defibrillator fund. Next month we have Sally Lister giving us an introduction to felting on 10th April at 7.30 in the Village Hall. New members and visitors very welcome.

CROOK WI At our March meeting we were delighted to welcome back Andy Lowe who spoke to us on Lakeland Villages. Before retirement Andy was the Buildings Conservation Officer for the National Park and he has a wealth of knowledge about how buildings and special areas have evolved. He is an excellent and enthusiastic communicator. As we visit familiar places in the future we will be looking for smaller details of interest in the houses and surrounding area. The speaker at our meeting in April will be Joanne Halliwell with her presentation of ―Betsy the Scullery Maid‖. Visitors are always welcome.

CROSTHWAITE & LYTH WI At its February meeting, members noted that C&L WI as a group will do as much as possible to raise ‗green‘ issues and identify resources. Each member received a ‗green heart‘ to take home. The results of Members‘ votes at the January meeting for the national WI 2019 Resolution were discussed; improving plant biosecurity in the UK was Members‘ preferred choice to be put forward for adoption. Members also received an update on the Spring Craft Day which Crosthwaite and Lyth WI will host as part of the national ―Get Creative‖ week (11-19/5/2019). The Craft Day is planned for 18th May 2019 in Crosthwaite School between 10.30 am and 4.30 pm, at which time a wide range of craft activities will be on offer. Admission will be free but some activities may incur a small charge to cover the cost of materials. Sessions will be held either on a ‗drop-in‘ basis or at scheduled time slots. Date of Next Meetings: Wednesday 17th April 2019 at 7.30 pm. Speaker will be Dr Sarah Watson who will talk about her experience as a medical volunteer in Nepal and Peru. Visitors welcome. Wednesday 15th May 2019 at 7.30 pm. This will be an Open Meeting, at which Adrian Lees will give a talk on ―Picturesque: The Crosthwaite Connection”.

UNDERBARROW No report submitted at the time of publication

WITHERSLACK WI Members braved the weather for the meeting on 12th March 2019 and enjoyed the talk by our speaker, Theresa Woell on the subject of “The World of Executive Jet”. Later this month, the Lyth Valley group meeting will be hosted by Witherslack WI on 28th March when Tom Atwood will be talking on gardens for bees. Our next ordinary meeting will be on April 9th when we will venture “Inside the Lakeland Farmhouse” with Andy Lowe. All visitors welcome.

Help Needed: A valuable bronze statue has been stolen from our garden in The Howe, in the Lyth Valley. The statue has huge sentimental value to us and we are offering a substantial reward for information leading to its safe return (£10,000). The theft is thought to have happened a couple of weeks ago, but it was only noticed and reported on Monday (February 25th) because we were not present.
