The object of this paper is two-fold: first, to show that contrary to what seem to have become a widely accepted view among historians of biology, the famous 1953 first Nature paper of Watson and Crick on the structure of DNA was widely cited – as compared to the average paper of the time – on a continuous basis from the very year of its publication and over the period 1953–1970 and that the citations came from a wide array of scientific journals. A systematic analysis of the bibliometric data thus shows that Watson’s and Crick’s paper did in fact have immediate and long term impact if we define ‘‘impact’’ in terms of comparative citations with other papers of the time. In this precise sense it did not fall into ‘‘relative oblivion’’ in the scientific community. The second aim of this paper is to show, using the case of the reception of the Watson–Crick and Jacob–Monod papers as concrete examples, how large scale bibliometric data can be used in a sophisticated manner to provide information about the dynamic of the scientific field as a whole instead of limiting the analysis to a few major actors and generalizing the result to the whole community without further ado. -

AFter receiving a PhD degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry From the University oF Graz in 1961, he did postdoctoral work in Vienna and New York and emigrated to the USA in 1968 where he accepted a proFessorship at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Six years later he moved to what was then the recently established Biozentrum oF the University oF Basel which he chaired From 1985 to 1987. From 1984 until 1989, ProFessor Schatz was Secretary General oF the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). AFter receiving the emeritus status in 2000, he served as President oF the Swiss Science and Technology Council For Four years. Gottfried Schatz is the author oF more than two hundred publications and several books and For more than two decades played a leading role in elucidating the biogenesis oF mitochondria and was a co-discoverer of mitochondrial DNA. Her ability to ‘see’ molecules such as cholesterol, penicillin, vitamin B and insulin transformed her field. 2014 sees the fiftieth anniversary of Professor Hodgkin’s Nobel prize. It is also the International Year of Crystallography, marking the 100th anniversary of Max von Laue’s Nobel Prize for Physics, awarded for his discovery that X-rays could be diffracted by crystals. That discovery underpinned Dorothy Hodgkin’s work. We are proud that Somerville supported her at a time when there was widespread opposition to married women pursuing academic careers. -

Sir Hans Kornberg, FRS Hans Kornberg was born in Germany in 1928 to Jewish parents. Following the advent of Hitler, the life of the family became increasingly dangerous and in 1939 Hans was sent to live with an uncle in England. Hans was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield and left at 17 to work as a laboratory assistant at the University of Sheffield under the supervision of Hans Krebs. The latter encouraged him to study further, which led to a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Biochemistry at Sheffield where Hans carried out ground-breaking work on urea metabolism. Postdoctoral work encompassed a period in America on a Harkness Fellowship, followed by a very productive few years at the MRC Metabolism Research Unit at Oxford during which he and Krebs (by now Sir Hans Krebs and a Nobel Laureate) elucidated the glyoxylate cycle, an important process in bacterial metabolism. In 1960 Hans was appointed to a Chair at the University of Leicester with the remit to set up a new Department of Biochemistry. In July 1961 Hans and several colleagues set off from Oxford to visit the Department for the first time. Having lunched well en route, it was late afternoon by the time they arrived in Leicester. As it was during the long vacation the University was closed and they were forced to enter the Department, which in those days was located in the Fielding Johnson Building, via an open toilet window. Hans’ first year as Professor was largely taken up with appointing staff and converting the old chemistry teaching laboratories into accommodation suitable for biochemistry research and teaching.
