2020 Middle School All-County Band Director Mrs. Mary Kathryn Bowman Choat

Mrs. Mary Kathryn Bowman Choat is in her eighth year as the director of bands at Hanes Magnet School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mrs. Choat grew up in Winston-Salem and first began her musical career at Hanes Magnet School many years ago. Mrs. Choat received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Appalachian State University where she played on the ASU Women’s Varsity Golf Team. She received her Master of Music degree in Performance from the University of Texas under the instruction of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens. While at the University of Texas, she traveled with UT Trombone Choir to Paris to perform in the 2012 International Trombone Festival. Since her return to Hanes in 2012, Mrs. Choat’s bands have consistently earned Superior ratings in grade III and IV at the Northwest North Carolina District Music Performance Adjudication and the West Region Jazz Music Performance Adjudication. Mrs. Choat has created a culture of high-performance standards at Hanes as evidenced by the notably large number of students placed in auditioned honors ensembles each year including All-County, All-District, All-State Honors, West-Region Jazz, and All-State Jazz Bands. Mrs. Choat has received numerous awards throughout her years at Hanes including the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) Encore Award in 2016, "Band Director of the Year" for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 2017, and the “Outstanding Jazz Educator Award” for the West Region Jazz section of NC in 2019. She frequently serves as a guest clinician for honors ensembles throughout the state. In addition to her position at Hanes Magnet School, Mrs. Choat performs regularly throughout North Carolina in many professional ensembles including Winston-Salem's only "" - Camel City Jazz Orchestra, the Piedmont Wind Symphony, and the North Carolina Brass Band. Mrs. Choat and her husband, Colin, live in downtown Winston-Salem. In her spare time, she is an avid marathon runner and triathlete. She also coaches the girls golf team at Reagan High School who won the state championships in the fall of 2018.

2020 High School All-County Band Director Dr. Carson Vermillion

Dr. Carson Vermillion serves as Director of Bands at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, TN. His duties include the direction of the Hilltopper Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the oversight of the operations of the Science Hill Band Department.

Dr. Vermillion holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Appalachian State University and the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a conducting student of Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo. Before joining the SHHS faculty, Dr. Vermillion served as Associate Director of Bands at Northern Arizona University where he also served as the director of the Curry Summer Music Camp.

Originally from Lenoir, NC, Dr. Vermillion enjoyed a successful career as a middle school and high school band director for several years. Under his direction, ensembles consistently received superior ratings at state and regional concert and marching festivals. Dr. Vermillion’s professional affiliations include the American School Band Directors Association, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Kappa Kappa Psi.

2020 Senior High School All-County Band Director Mr. Lafe Cook

Lafe Cook has been a high school band director for twenty-eight years and is in his twenty-third year as the Director of the Dobyns-Bennett Band Program in Kingsport, Tennessee. Mr. Cook is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he was drum major of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band and a graduate assistant with the music department. He taught at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia for six years prior to coming to Dobyns-Bennett. The Dobyns-Bennett Symphonic Band under Mr. Cook's direction has performed at numerous conventions including the College Band Directors National Association and National Band Association Southern Regional Convention in 2002, the Tennessee Music Education Association Conference in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016, the Bands of America’s National Concert Band Festival in 2006, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2002 and 2009. The Dobyns-Bennett Symphonic Band was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s 2005 Sudler Flag of Honor recognizing international excellence in concert band and the 2015 Sudler Shield for international excellence in marching band. Dobyns-Bennett is one of only 16 schools nationally to achieve both awards. Most recently the band received an invitation to perform at the 2017 American Bandmaster’s Association and performed a sold-out concert in 2018 in Carnegie Hall with internationally known Irish tenor Emmet Cahill. Under Mr. Cook’s direction, the Dobyns- Bennett Marching Band has appeared in four Tournament of Roses Parades, two Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, The Lord Mayor of London’s Parade, the Fiesta Bowl Parade, and the Presidential Inaugural Parade. The marching band is a sixtime Bands of America Regional Champion and has been a Band’s of America Grand Nationals Finalist three times, winning the AAA National Class Championship in 2018. Mr. Cook is a past state band chair for the Tennessee Music Education Association, a past president of the Tennessee Bandmasters Association, a past president of the East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, is a former two term member of the Board of Directors for the National Band Association, and is currently the President of the Tennessee Music Education Association. Mr. Cook is a six-time recipient of the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence and was honored by the John Philip Sousa Foundation as a Sudler Flag of Honor Laureate. He was named “Aide de Camp” to the Governor of the State of Tennessee in 2005. His professional and honorary affiliations include the National Band Association, Tennessee Music Education Association, East Tennessee Band and Orchestra Association, National Education Association, Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Cook was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 2009 and at the time was the organization’s youngest member and one of only thirty high school band directors in the 300-member organization.

Students in the 2020 All-County Band were selected by audition. There were 320 students that auditioned from the middle schools and 91 were selected for the Middle School All-County Band. There were 327 students that auditioned from the high schools and 86 students were selected for the High School All-County Band and 86 for the Senior High All-County Band. This event gives talented and motivated instrumental students an opportunity to work together under the direction of outstanding guest conductors.

We would like to thank the staff of North Buncombe Middle and High School for their assistance in hosting the clinic and concert. Thanks to Charles D. Owen Middle School for hosting the auditions and many thanks to our family and community members for supporting the Arts.
