Smith Rum-bah Brian West Temple of Ka Uka Ralph Ford 2020 Middle School All-County Band Director Mrs. Mary Kathryn Bowman Choat Mrs. Mary Kathryn Bowman Choat is in her eighth year as the director of bands at Hanes Magnet School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mrs. Choat grew up in Winston-Salem and first began her musical career at Hanes Magnet School many years ago. Mrs. Choat received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Appalachian State University where she played on the ASU Women’s Varsity Golf Team. She received her Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from the University of Texas under the instruction of Dr. Nathaniel Brickens. While at the University of Texas, she traveled with UT Trombone Choir to Paris to perform in the 2012 International Trombone Festival. Since her return to Hanes in 2012, Mrs. Choat’s bands have consistently earned Superior ratings in grade III and IV at the Northwest North Carolina District Music Performance Adjudication and the West Region Jazz Music Performance Adjudication. Mrs. Choat has created a culture of high-performance standards at Hanes as evidenced by the notably large number of students placed in auditioned honors ensembles each year including All-County, All-District, All-State Honors, West-Region Jazz, and All-State Jazz Bands. Mrs. Choat has received numerous awards throughout her years at Hanes including the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA) Encore Award in 2016, "Band Director of the Year" for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 2017, and the “Outstanding Jazz Educator Award” for the West Region Jazz section of NC in 2019. She frequently serves as a guest clinician for honors ensembles throughout the state. In addition to her position at Hanes Magnet School, Mrs. Choat performs regularly throughout North Carolina in many professional ensembles including Winston-Salem's only "big band" - Camel City Jazz Orchestra, the Piedmont Wind Symphony, and the North Carolina Brass Band. Mrs. Choat and her husband, Colin, live in downtown Winston-Salem. In her spare time, she is an avid marathon runner and triathlete. Walter Beeler Longford Longford Legend Robert Sheldon Khan Julie Giroux They Shall Run and Be Free Brant Karrick Beau Ideal John Philip Sousa 2020 High School All-County Band Director Dr. Carson Vermillion Dr. Carson Vermillion serves as Director of Bands at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, TN. His duties include the direction of the Hilltopper Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the oversight of the operations of the Science Hill Band Department. Dr. Vermillion holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Appalachian State University and the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a conducting student of Dr. Thomas V. Fraschillo. Before joining the SHHS faculty, Dr. Vermillion served as Associate Director of Bands at Northern Arizona University where he also served as the director of the Curry Summer Music Camp. Originally from Lenoir, NC, Dr. Vermillion enjoyed a successful career as a middle school and high school band director for several years. Under his direction, ensembles consistently received superior ratings at state and regional concert and marching festivals. Larry Daehn 2020 Senior High School All-County Band Director Mr. Lafe Cook Lafe Cook has been a high school band director for twenty-eight years and is in his twenty-third year as the Director of the Dobyns-Bennett Band Program in Kingsport, Tennessee. Mr. Cook is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he was drum major of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band and a graduate assistant with the music department. He taught at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia for six years prior to coming to Dobyns-Bennett. The Dobyns-Bennett Symphonic Band under Mr. Cook's direction has performed at numerous conventions including the College Band Directors National Association and National Band Association Southern Regional Convention in 2002, the Tennessee Music Education Association Conference in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016, the Bands of America’s National Concert Band Festival in 2006, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2002 and 2009.
