The JNF is an agency of the Keren Kayemeth L'Israel (KKL), the world federation based in Jerusalem, Israel. The KKL was founded on Dec. 29, 1901 at the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland. The objective of the JNF is land redemption and reclamation in the State of Israel. The JNF began its Canadian activities in 1906 under the aegis of the Federation of Zionist Societies of Canada (FZSC), est. 1898, precursor to the Zionist Organization of Canada (ZOC). At the time it was the only practical instrument for the redemption of the Jewish homeland. Much of the monetary support raised for Palestine from the Canadian Jewish community at the time was channelled into various land redemption and afforestation projects undertaken by the KKL in pioneering Palestine. In 1910-1912, the Canadian Zionist Convention raised $10,000.00 to redeem land in Palestine. In 1913, the FZSC in Canada redeemed 800 dunams of land in the Kastinia Colony in the Negev Region near the city of Hebron. The JNF's activities expanded greatly in July 1927 when the Zionist Convention which was held in Winnipeg, adopted a resolution to reclaim 30,000 dunams at Emek Hefer near the city of Netanya. In 1922, the JNF in Canada was officially formed as a separate department of the ZOC. The JNF's activities were carried on by volunteers with assistance from the ZOC staff. In 1940, the JNF was reorganized on a firmer basis with the appointment of an executive director and a National Chairman to co-ordinate its fund-raising activities throughout Canada, although it remained officially part of and reported to the ZOC. Prior to November 9th, 1961, the JNF in Canada was still technically a department of the ZOC. It received its budget from annual campaigns organized by the ZOC and received income from blue box collections. On November 9, 1961, it applied for Federal Letters Patent which were granted on March 14, 1962. On July 1, 1963 the JNF became an independent corporation. With the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, support for the JNF intensified amongst Canada's Jews. In that year a new form of communal expression of support came into being with creation of the Negev Dinner. The first one was held in Montreal in 1948. The annual Negev Dinner, which is sponsored by the JNF in Canadian cities, has been a tradition for more than forty years. Annual fund-raising dinners were first introduced into Canada in the early 1940's for special JNF projects such as the Soldiers' Land Fund as well as the establishment of a colony located at Emek Hefer which was named in honour of A.J. Freiman (1880-1944), of Ottawa. These events proved to be excellent fund-raisers and very popular. In the larger cities a testimonial dinner is organized each year in honour of a leading citizen and the proceeds of the dinner are used to establish a JNF project in Israel in the name of the guest of honour. Traditionally, prominent community leaders such as Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut are honoured at these dinners as well as non-Jewish friends of Israel including former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, former Premier of Ontario William Davis and John Bassett. A nearly complete set of Negev Dinner Souvenir Programmes is found in the collection. The records for many of the major large-scale projects undertaken by the JNF in Israel are found in the collection. These include: the Canada Forest (near Ein Kerem), the Canadian Centennial Forest (near Amatzya in the Lachish region), the Canadian Friendship Forest (near Nashua), Canada Park ( a 7,500 acre project located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem), the town of Ilot (situated in the Negev region), the Guardians of the Arava, Garden of the Rebuilders of Jerusalem and Galil Canada ( a settlement of fourteen villages in the northern Galilee. Other traditional fund-raising activities include tree sales, Golden Book inscriptions, Sefer Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Sefer Hayeled, High Holy Day campaign appeals across the country, Tu B'Shevat telethons and Blue Boxes. The JNF maintains offices in most of the major Canadian cities and is administered by a Board of Directors, headed by the National President. The executive vice-president, who is based in the Montreal head office, co-ordinates the work of the entire country, and serves as a liaison with the parent Keren Kayemeth L'Israel in Jerusalem. Other collections which contain JNF related material include the Bernard Bloomfield Papers (MG 31 H 24) and the Eric Exton Papers (MG 31 H 116) JEWISH NATIONAL FUND OF CANADA MG 28, V 57 Vol. File Subject Date MINUTE BOOKS and MINUTES OF ANNUAL MEETINGS 1 1 JNF - National Minutes (Bound volume) 1941-1951 1 2 JNF - Montreal Minutes (Bound volume) 1941-1951 1 3 JNF - Minutes and Reports (Bound volume) 1952-1953 1 4 JNF - Minutes and Reports (Bound volume) 1954-1956 1 5 JNF - Minutes and Reports (Bound volume) 1956-1958 1 6 JNF - Minutes and Reports (Bound volume) 1959-1961 1 7 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, May 1964 25, 1964: Booklet of Reports 1 8 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1965 24, 1965: Booklet of Reports 1 9 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1966 20, 1966: Booklet of Reports 1 10 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1967 11, 1967: Booklet of Reports 1 11 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1968 17, 1968: Booklet of Reports 1 12 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1968 17, 1968: General correspondence 1 13 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1969 22, 1969: Booklet of Reports 2 JEWISH NATIONAL FUND OF CANADA MG 28, V 57 Vol. File Subject Date 2 1 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1969 22, 1969: General correspondence 2 2 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1970 15, 1970: Agenda items 2 3 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1970 15, 1970: Booklet of Reports 2 4 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1970 15, 1970: General correspondence 2 5 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, June 1970 15, 1970: General correspondence 2 6 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1971 13, 1971: Booklet of Reports 2 7 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1971 13, 1971: General correspondence 2 8 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, June 1971 13, 1971 - National, Regional and Local Officers: Correspondence and lists 2 9 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, April 1972 16, 1972: General correspondence 2 10 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, 1973 March 18, 1973: Booklet of Reports 2 11 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, 1973 March 18, 1973: General correspondence 2 12 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1974 12, 1974 2 13 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1974 12, 1974: General correspondence 2 14 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1974 12, 1974 - Lists of National, Regional and Local officers 2 15 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, April 1975 6, 1975: Booklet of Reports 2 16 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, April 1975 6, 1975: General Correspondence MG 28, V 57 JEWISH NATIONAL FUND OF CANADA 3 Vol. File Subject Date 2 17 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, April 1975 6, 1975 - National, Regional & Local Officers 2 18 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Montreal, April 1975 6, 1975 - Material for 1975 annual booklet and annual minutes 2 19 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1976 14, 1976: Booklet of Reports 2 20 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1976 14, 1976: General correspondence 2 21 Annual Meeting of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, Toronto, March 1976 14, 1976 - National, Regional & Local Officers, presidential
