SUBJECT: Phone calls for Commission on Jewish Education in North America

During the last week of June (the date varied) Art Naparstek, Director of the Commission, wrote to a list of people who have agreed to serve as commissioners asking them to send information which we could use in preparing a brief biographical sketch on each person. In order to prepare the necessary papers, we need a resume by Wed., July 2(J, at the latest. Would you please call the people listed below (a conversation with their secretaries is probably best) and ask them to send that material to Art Naparstek at Premier Industrial Foundation, 4500 Euclid Ave., by July 24P. If they ask, tell them that details about the August 1 meeting are in the mail. 1/ti-l ,4,h-f 7/&,s/~P'e: Tfu;··/_ -f-1. O< ✓

Mr . Arthur J . Naparstek Premier Industrial Foundation 4500 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44103 Dear Mr . Naparstek:

Thank you for your letter of July 12.

This is the first I hear of a Monday, August 1 meeting , and I am afraid I will not be able to make it as we are away on vacation at that time. Mort Mandel and I have been trying unsuccessfully to reach one another on the phone for some time and I fear it is about this meeting. My regrets for not being able to attend. I certainly do hope to attend regularly in the future and hope that you will be able to set up meetings with significant advance notice in order to make that possible.

I enclose both a brief bio and a vita as you requested. I look forward to hearing of the results of the August 1 meet ing and to seeing you in the near future.

Mr. Arthur J. Naparstek Premier Industrial Foundation 4500 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, OH 44103

Dear Mr. Naparstek:

Thank you for your letter of welcome to the newly established commission. In responding to your request for biographical information, I am including both my official curriculum vita and a more informal narrative containing personal data . Si nce you will use some universal format for the biographical sketches, I leave it to you to integrate the two elements.

I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and during high school and college, I was involved with a Zionist youth movement, . This involvement had a great influence on the development of my personal Jewish identity. During college I spent a year at the Institute for Jewish Youth Leaders from Abroad in Jerusalem. The "Machon" included academic study in Judaica as wll as leadership training. Upon my return I became involved in Jewish teaching, youth work and Jewish camping as I completed my studies at Radcliffe ' college. In 1954 I married David A. Lee, a fellow Young Judaean, who was then a medical student at Boston University. His trai ning in surgery and service in the Air Force took us to many locations before we settled in Los Angeles. We had three children - Aviva, Joseph and Joshua . In spite of the tragedy of my husband's sudden death in 1974, all of them have shaped lives of achievement and Jewish involvement. All three had extensive Jewish educations, spent a year of study in Israel and completed their academic courses of study. Aviva, who is married (also to a fellow Young Judaean) and has a five year old son, just received her M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine in May 1988. Joseph holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and has done graduate work in Cinema at the University of Southern California. Joshua graduated with his B. A. from Harvard University thi s month, June 1988. Mr. Arthur Naparstek June 24 , 1988 Page two My many activities as a lay leader particularly in Hadassah, the Heschel Day School and my synagogue - have certainly shaped my perceptions as a professional in Jewish life and my vision for the training of Jewish educators. One of the great challenges is the preparation of professionals to be full partners in the leadership of the Jewish community and Jewish institutions. At the same time I believe lay leaders must be educated to view Jewish professionals as their natural partners in insuring the viability of Jewish life in North America. I am sure these personal notes are far more than what you need, but I wanted to give you some sense of the "person" behind the curriculum vita. I very much look forward to our working relationship in the context of the Commission. Sincerely, oJv~c1-C4~ Saras. Lee, Director 1 Rhea Hirsch School of Education --· ~------~

Attached are drafts of biographical summaries for Ronald Appleby and Lionel Schipper, the two additions to our list of commissioners since the earlier set of bios was prepared. Also attached is a proposed new biographical summary for Florence Melton, who was unhappy with what she considered the "brevity and superficiality" of the earlier bio. The attached is an abbreviation of what she asked me to include. She wishes to review it before we finalize it.

I would appreciate your comments and suggestions on all three as soon as possible .
