The Khanpur Azad Gram Unnayan Samity (KAGUS) is a Non- Governmental Organization established in the year 1987. The Vision – Mission statement of the organization is as follows:

OUR VISION The vision of the organization is to empower women, child and adolescents, youths, deprived communities, especially minorities and backward classes and common people in rural & urban areas.

OUR MISSION To ensure that women, child and adolescents, youths, deprived communities, especially minorities and backward classes and common people in rural areas are empowered through inputs in education, health and hygiene, vocational training, games and sports and environmental sustainability with active participation of the rural people.

KAGUS HISTORY

Beginning with a KAGUS is a well-recognized Non small group of Governmental Organization (NGO) in committed people, Malda, West Bengal and has various KHANPUR AZAD donations related permissions. The activities reach out to poor and marginalized women, adolescents and disadvantaged and marginalized children from rural areas of Malda district. KAGUS journey owes much to the unflagging support of a large number of friends, supporters and well-wishers of Chanchal II Block, Malda district.

Malda is a district covering area of 3733 sq Km with Bihar and Uttar Dinajpur at North , Murshidabad at South , Bangladesh at east , and Jharkhand and Bihar at West. It shares 165.5 km international border with Bangladesh. Having a central location it is an important junction and entry point to from South Bengal. The river Ganga makes its first entry in West Bengal near Manikchak of Malda. As it is a low lying basin, it is prone to flood. The gateway of North Bengal, Malda, once the capital of Gour-Banga with its 3456 sq kms lay of the land classified into Tal, Diara, and Barind awaits the advent of tourists and people of archeological interest with its wealth to be enjoyed and its huge potential to be explored. This portion of the Earth is washed by the waves of the rivers Ganges, Mahananda, Fulahar, Kalindri and had been the witness of different empires raised, flourished and cast down near oblivion by a successor kingdom built up on the relics of its predecessor. ● To collaborate and converge with the different service providers and with extension agencies, Panchayet Raj Institutions, Voluntary agencies, Industrial and Business houses, Central & State Govt. and International development activities. ● Identify the priority areas of vulnerable target community minorities, SC, ST, backward classes, Dalits and other underprivileged for immediate interventions. ● Awareness, training and capacity building activities, ● Livelihood development activities related to socio-economic development, ● To pursue the educational activities related to child, adult-both formal systems, ● To establish Quality Standards of Childcare units-institution, homes, orphanages for the vulnerable children. ● To strengthen community oriented non-institutional services like adoption, foster care, day care, night shelter, crèche, sponsorship, family counseling, and other community centers. ● To pursue the community health related activities, sanitation, prevention and care units for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria and life cycle approach of RCH (Reproductive &Child Health) services. ● Activities to promote cultural status uplifting the indigenous cultural status and local folks, ● To establish programme for relinquished children, establish home and rehabilitation units. ● To work for the prevention of cruelty to animals by establishing the animal care unit, ambulance for animals and necessary centers for the same. ● To establish different programmes and helpline services for women and children in difficult circumstances and work for the rehabilitation of child labours by opening special school. ● To establish drug de-addiction centers, ● To open charitable dispensaries, maternity home, Children’s clinics, Orphanage, family planning centers. ● To encourage and impart education of science and technology, in cultivation. PLAN OF ACTIONS Identify the priority areas of vulnerable target community especially minorities, backward classes, Dalit and other underprivileged for immediate intervention. ● Evolve orientation and training modules for sensitization, awareness generations, and capacity building of various target community and service providers who have impact over the vulnerable target groups. ● Prepare and maintain data base and conduct situational analysis on the magnitude of problem and available existence services. ● Undertake rural development activities through SHGs in close collaboration with Panchyet involving different other stake holders with a measure of sustenance towards alleviation of poverty ● Develop a resource bank on the target areas as per the prioritized needs towards making convergences of the existing service providers-specially to create linkage and networks amongst govt. ● Development of rural people through formation of rural infrastructures and other resource development. ● Protection and redemption Child Rights specially for the children in need of care and protection, rehabilitation and social integration of children, setting standard of institution care and protection of children. ● Promotion of livelihood, service providing in community health, improvement of educational and cultural aspects of vulnerable community towards optimizing social changes. ● Care and protection of the environmental issues, prevention of cruelty to Animals and Plants ● Interventions with the vulnerable community to prevent HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other communicable and non-communicable diseases. TARGET COMMUNITIES AND SOCIAL ISSUES OF EXCLUSION THEY FACE

The target communities women, child and adolescents, youths, deprived communities like Muslim Minority, SC and ST of the above mentioned blocks are faced many problems due to lack of awareness on their education, health & hygiene, income generation. In this area thus have resulted in total ignorance of the rights and entitlements and has resulted in discrimination and exploitation of the target Communities. ● Socially and economically deprived from their rights and entitlements due to belonging to excluded community (Almost 80% - 90% target community belong to Muslim Minority, SC & ST); ● Food and income insecurity due to drought prone area, low soil fertility, insufficient irrigation facilities, under productivity, ignorance about scientific farming practices, support from service providers; [Type text]Page 6

● Bonded labour or forced migration (45%/50% Migrate labours) giving rise to social issues like trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of women and adolescents, HIV Aids, etc. ● Low Literacy rate due to poverty, ignorance, poor infrastructure, and services ● High rate (90%) of child marriage due to poverty, social taboos and illiteracy; ● Low health status of women, child and adolescents due to lack of awareness, poor infrastructures ​ and delivery services as well as social and religious taboos. ● Malnutrition among children and women due to lack of sufficient ICDS centres, its proper services and lack of awareness. (Immunization coverage 52% – 65%), ​ ● Poor and non-existent Sanitation facilities due to no concerted effort by the Panchayat (80% ​ defecate in open air);

OUR KEY ACTIVITIES TO CHANGE THESE ISSUES OF EXCLUSION

The focuses of the organization are to educate the target communities on their rights and entitlement related to education, health, sanitation, nutrition etc. The activities taken up as follows:

● Mobilizing and building capacities of members of socially excluded groups in raising issues of discrimination, planning and monitoring of schools and health services at village, GP and Block level; ● Mobilizing and building capacity of Village Groups and SHGs to engage with government structures at the local, GP and block level on issues of education, health, nutrition, water and sanitation; ● Advocacy with the state for developing and promoting community relevant curriculum and pedagogy; ● Networking and policy lobbying for influencing the provisions in the Right to Education, Health, Food Act; ● Developing innovative models for promoting girl child education, early childhood care & education, interventions for children belonging to Muslim, SC, ST, taking leverage of SSA and RMSA provisions ● Identifying and advocating for non discriminatory access to nutrition and health services for socially excluded communities and women and girls; ● Monitoring the formation and functioning of Rogi Kalyan Samitis and Village Health & Sanitation Committees (VHSC) and ensuring proper representation and participation of socially excluded groups in these institutions ● Mobilization and building awareness among women, adolescent girls on health service provisions ensured under various government programmes ● Mobilization and building awareness among men, PRIs, community institutions and family members on women’s reproductive health and rights; ● Advocacy with the state for effective and wide spread implementation of School Sanitation and Health Education programme of the government; ● Active engagement with the media and state for highlighting discriminatory practices against socially excluded communities and denying them dignified livelihood options. ● Advocacy to implement all six services of ICDS and 100% access to water and sanitation facilities by the socially excluded groups; ● Social Equity Audit/ participatory evaluation for monitoring discriminatory practices in AWC against women and children of socially excluded communities; ● Production of IEC materials and newsletters of different schemes/programmes and best practices.

Khanpur Azad Gram Unnayan Samity has been working in some area of the Burdwan District to implementing the various activities like USG Clinic visit, awareness meetings at wards, College Sensitization programme, Save the Girl Child Meeting etc. under PC&PNDT Project as DH & FWS, Burdwan. In this scheme we have targeted in this year by the DH & FWS, Burdwan is 166 nos. USG Clinic visit, 135 nos. awareness meetings at wards, 19 nos. College Sensitization programme, 1 no. Save the Girl Child Meeting.

Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV-AIDS (PPTCT The PPTCTC project implanting at 13 nos. ICTC With 5 nos. ORWs & one coord. at various ICTCT of Malda and ​ Darjeeling District follow up & linkage ANC HIV positive mothers with ICTCT, ART to prevent HIV of their new baby. More over 200 nos. ANC & PNC mothers are under this project. Identified HIV+ ANC Mothers at ICTC and follow and counseling her to take CD4 count, start ART & continue, Institutional delivery, getting NVP baby DBS test, feeding care, start & continuing CPT. After 18 month of child age getting to Rapid test and save it from HIV reactive. More than 300 HIV+ ANC mothers and 300 Childs are getting services in this project to long life them.

The main focus of rural development is to provide the better environment to a child in terms of the basic need of children – food, shelter, treatment, education and poverty less happy family. The main hindrance of rural area is poverty and lack of entrepreneurship. The organization’s main focus is to promote the socio-economic development by way of development

The overall goal of the society to enhance the bargaining power of the Communities by strengthening their capacity through knowledge and information so that they are able to access rights and justice as well as build awareness about the social taboos prevailing in their community that hinders them from availing the public services and their development. The focus areas of the project was i. Facilitating empowerment of the socially excluded for their active participation in political processes and local decision-making; ii. Enhancing opportunities / options for generating opportunity both material and social. Interventions taken up included awareness campaigns on food and livelihood rights; Sensitisation workshops on government’s policies & schemes; Workshops on RTI, Child Rights, Prevention of Child Marriage, Right to Education, Right to Health; Review meetings to monitor and evaluate implementation of the food and work schemes within the panchayet, etc. The samity has been working on the creating awareness on the necessity of the use and SAVE pure drinking water among the massages. It also has been working on the fatal effect of reckless measure of underground water in rural areas.

SPORTS

KAGUS has been a volley ball play ground in its land. The ground made through the support of Youth & Sports department (Govt. of West Bengal) last year. In this ground the youths are playing regularly and This year our organization organized a volley ball tournament. The community youths are very influence to play. We also arrange sports for women SHGs. More than 85 women are participated in the Sports programmee.

AWARENESS

KAGUS has been organized awareness meetings and rallies to implement MGNREGA while rural labours are more and more involved in the 100 day work right. We are engaged the all of Panchayet of Chanchal- II & Ratua-II block for all facilities implement for rural development by PRI. A view of local panchyet prodhans of Chanchal –II block in this year MGNREGA work done a record scale. Last year average work done 29 days and after awareness this year done this work up to 57 days. NYK also funded Mentor Club while we have been networking with 22 nos. small clubs & NGO in Chanchal-II block for the youth’s development and sports.
