The Background, 16th December 2008 Azad Hossain, a permanent resident of Galimpur Village, Motiharpur Gram Panchayat, of Chanchal Block-I, had a long standing issues with regards to the industrial connection that he had applied for his husking mill. He had first approached the Chanchal Group Electricity Supply for his connection and deposited an amount of Rs.1,55,893/- as quotation on 16.12.2008, as per inspection and estimates submitted by the staff of the local office. His connection needed extension of HT line and installation of a 25 KVA transformer. The local supply office issued a work order on 30.01.09 and an erection order on 10.02.09. However no work was started. RESA starts, Baseline Survey in May 2008 and 1st GIM on 30th November 2008 The RESA activities had already started in the Chanchal Block of Malda by that time. The first phase of the Grassroots Interface Meetings was organised on 30.11.08 by Chanchal Janakalyan Samity, the RESA district partner for Malda. Azad Hossain came to know of the activities under the project through the Samity and got in touch with them and explained his case. They suggested him to talk to the station manager and he accordingly did that. He was however informed that no transformer was available at that point in time. His case therefore, remained pending. Further action taken by Azad, 24th September to 29th October, 2009 The next set of developments started when the local Station Manager received an objection from local people on 24.

    ~ 21 ~ CHAPTER -2 BRIEF ACCOUNT OF PHYSICAL, CULTURAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE STUDY AREA 2.1 Introduction Malda district is famous in West Bengal and India. Because in the medieval period the capital of Bengal was Pandua and Gaur (Lambourn 1819). Not only that, presently pandua and gaur in the Malda district are an important historical tourism centre. Malda district is famous for the mango fruits in India. Also, the Kaliachak region of the Malda district is famous for the cultivation of silk (sericulture). The day of independence of India is 15th August 1947. But the Independence Day of Malda district is 17th August 1947 (Mondal 2016). Because the Malda district was under East Pakistan (Bangladesh) from 15th August 1947 to 17th August 1947 (Gosh 2004). Malda district is an important district in West Bengal. Because Malda district is called the gateway of North Bengal. The Physical, cultural and socio-economic conditions of the Malda district are very diverse. An opinion is that derived from the Arabic word 'Mal' comes to the word Maldah. The word "Mal" is an Arabic word its means wealth and the origin of the name "Maldah” probably signifies that it was an important centre of trade (Roy 2001). Another opinion is the origin of the word Maldah from the community of the local 'Maladh' name.

With this objective in view, this ethno botanical study among the local tribal and non-tribal people of this district has been carried out during January 2012 to January 2013 in search of traditional healers or practitioners who ceaselessly use their worthy knowledge to treat several skin ailments for human purposes. The information was collected by means of open-ended conversations, semi-structured questionnaire, group discussion, etc. Information obtained from the informants was also cross verified to check the authenticity. This study revealed that a total of 75 medicinal plants under 65 genera of 42 families are frequently used to treat various types of ailments with 10 herbal preparations. of 75 plants, herbs possess the highest growth forms (40%) that were used in making traditional preparation, followed by shrubs (26%), trees (24%) and climbers (9.34%). Leaves comprised the major plant parts used (49.34%), followed by stem (1.34%), Root (8%), seeds (2.6%), bark (5.34%), whole plant (10.67%), fruits (4%), Rhizome (2.67%), Latex (6.67%), Throne (1.34%) ,Resin (1.34%) and oil (1.34) to prepare in the medicinal formulations for skin problems.
