HOME OF THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE ON THE BAY 37º 12′ 20″ N 76º 26′ 11″ W August 2020 Volume #40, Number 8 WWW.SEAFORDYACHTCLUB.COM

Hello SYC! We finally got to see each other in person last month. Maybe we should have a new directory made with pictures of everyone wearing their masks. It's sometimes hard to rec- ognize someone who you haven't seen in six months especially when they are wearing a mask. I had to do a few double takes to see and figure out who I was talking to!

The twice postponed Flag Raising ceremony finally happened on July 12th. Past Commodore Cecil and Barbara Adcox did a wonderful job of decorating and adapting the event to meet the new Phase 3 guidelines. I guess boating season is finally open!

Our new building is finally complete. The Fire Marshall's inspection passed, final inspection with York County passed, and we have a Certificate of Occupancy! It's been a long process but well worth it. The front of our Clubhouse gives an awesome first impression as you're driving onto the Club property. Inside decorating and furnishings are coming along.

Junior got off to a great start (after a two week Coronavirus delay). Thanks Paul Hutter and Red Eilenfield for another great season. Due to the large number of people anticipated and concerns about social distancing on the spectator boats, the end of the year regatta has been canceled.

Well, our joyride into Phase 3 didn't last too long. Due to the limitations imposed in the Governor's latest Executive Order 68, we had to postpone the Summer Party (August 1st ) and cancel the next regular monthly dinner (August 18th.). If we should move back into Phase 3, we hope to reschedule the Summer Party to Saturday, August 29th.

Mike and Jimmy are also working on the Labor Day Club Cruise to Cape Charles. Hope the plans and state guidelines all align so we can all make that one.

Keep tabs of all SYC updates and events on our new Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ groups/139382387447353/

-COVID Commodore Pete Seaford Yacht Club is doing their part to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic. Please read the below questionnaire and decide whether you are relatively safe to participate in our events, or if you should probably stay home! We love seeing everyone, but we have to be smart.

In accordance with national and state health guidelines, we highly encourage you to either self-quarantine, seek testing, or contact your primary care provider if you are having symptoms. You will not be allowed entry into this club or participation in club activities at this time.

Seaford Yacht Club: COVID-19 Guidelines COVID-19 is a virus spread by respiratory droplets traveling from an infected person to others through the air or on exposed contact surfaces. Wearing a mask helps reduce that risk for yourself and others. Please wear your mask to enter the Clubhouse. o Members should also remember to use cough hygiene and hand washing. o Per the Virginia Department of Health masks are recommended to be worn inside or anytime when less than 6’ apart (both indoors and outdoors) o Wear mask until seated at your table. Remove mask for eating and drinking.

Social Distancing Protocol o Members that are not part of a family unit should distance at least 6’ apart at all times. o Gathering in an area for long periods without social distancing does not meet guidelines. o Pay attention to social distancing markers on the floor, tables, and lawn. o At the time of publishing this Semaphore, gatherings in VA are limited to 50 people or less o Utilize all available spaces (weather permitting) to encourage social distancing. Outdoors: social distancing still needs to be followed.

Click HERE for the full document detailing SYC COVID-19 Guidelines As Hurricane Isaias approaches, I want to ask all slip holders and interested parties to inspect their mooring lines and boats.

Dock lines should be doubled, and items that create windage should be removed. I can help if needed.

Thanks,

Your Dockmaster

Single Handed Race, August 22nd The Single Handed Race is a special racing category that includes racing non-stop around the world. That’s pretty extreme. Our around the buoys race is still a challenge for shippers that normally carry several crew and an opportunity for those that do not normally race with dedicated crew. See the race instructions for details. Please note the special safety rules for this race.

We still need race sponsor for the 2020 Single Handed Race.

AUGUST MONTHLY DINNER: CANCELED due to Executive Order 68 This month’s Monthly Dinner Meeting scheduled for August 18th has been canceled because of the restrictions placed on the Hampton Roads area where gatherings can not be more than 50 people.

JULY DINNER MEETING We were able to squeeze in our July Dinner Meeting while we were still in Phase 3. Leah & Jamie Smith (some of our newest members) were the hosts for the dinner. Due to the uncertainty of having the event the dinner was a pot-luck or bring your own food. Members were thrilled to gather together while social distancing and donning masks. Beer and wine were served by members wearing gloves and masks. COVID Commodore Pete officially welcomed our newest SYC was finally able to officially members to the Club. (L to R) Bob & Linda Reviea, welcome Leah & Jamie to the Pete Showalter, and Jamie & Leah Smith Club (at a dinner they happened to be hosting) and give them their official SYC burgee, membership certificate, membership cards, and a key to the Club. We also welcomed our newest members, Bob & Linda Reviea, to the Club and this was their first Dinner Meeting as members. Bob & Linda jumped right in and helped serve wine and beer. Potential member Peter Bauman also attended the Ginger Smith social meeting. Members enjoyed getting to know him. distancing by the Club’s COVID –19 signage. Thank you to all that pitched in to help Leah and Jamie navigate hosting their first event at the Club. COVID Commodore Pete discussed the COVID-19 guidelines for the Club, updated the membership about the construction project, and discussed upcoming events. Members enjoyed checking out the new Barnacle bar and the Clubhouse renovation. It was great to see everyone’s faces (even if it was just their eyes)! Linda Reviea & Penny Showalter gloved and masked up to serve wine.

We almost made it BUT the Summer Party on 8/1 had to be postponed due to the Governor’s Executive Order 68 limiting events in Hampton Roads to 50 people or less. Our plan is to have the party on 8/29 if the Governor moves Hampton Roads back to Phase 3. Since we will (hopefully) be welcoming everyone back to our new clubhouse (home port) we are dubbing this as the Red Right Return Summer Party! Wear your SYC gear, nautical colors, or come as you are to celebrate coming back to home port! Hope to see a lot of you there!

- Submitted by Jaclyn Smith, Summer Party Chair - FLAG RAISING CEREMONY & LUNCHEON 2020 Our Flag Raising Ceremony and Luncheon planning changed weekly! Cecil and I started planning the event early in April. With all the COVID-19 restrictions changing became the norm. We went through Phase 1 Lockdown, then Phase 2 and, finally, Phase 3. The date was set by our Commodore, Pete and the BoT for July 12!

We made the best of a bad situation! The Club was finishing up construction and the final walkthrough with Harbin Builders was on July 8th with the Building Committee. Most of the items identified on Wednesday were removal of construction trash and debris. A special thank you to Jeanette and Mike Webb for the extensive cleanup with their crew, AJ and Fabienne Booker, that cleaned and sanitized every inch of the kitchen cabinets inside and out and others washed all the dishes and pots and pans for the first time since we started construction! They worked tirelessly from Wednesday through Saturday night, July 11th. Jeanette and Mike had the kitchen floor cleaned Commodore Pete Showalter raising extensively and then on the Saturday night of the 11th they the flags at the ceremony. even pressure washed the mats. This could not be done until construction was finished and the walkthrough on the 8th! Red from Junior Sailing cooperated and allowed Barbara and Cecil to rearrange tables, chairs and Memorial Wreath wine cabinet Friday afternoon after the end of the day for Junior Sailing. The Board of Trustees were asked to help on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday morning, Tina MacRitchie, Jerry Dooley and John Leist showed up at 10:00a.m. Tina ironed all the tablecloths! John worked for days setting up the sound system! Pete Showalter, Jerry, Mike Webb, Tom Feldhaus, Greg and Lizz Epperson, and John Leist helped set up the five tables and tents outside. Thank you to Art Dister, Lizz and Greg Epperson and Pete Showalter for supplying the tents and coolers. Ginger Smith brought lunch for all the members working on Saturday and also helped Barbara and Penny out! Jaclyn Smith helped a great deal in buying and dropping off all of the beverages off at the Club! She also brought all the COVID-19 laminated signage and floor - ers. Penny Showalter helped make flower arrangements. Kathy Moore supplied all Vice Commodore John Leist (R) & the Mason jars. Click HERE to see more photos from the 2020 SYC Flag Raising Ceremony & Luncheon. SYC Members should be very proud of the Club’s community service provided by the Junior Sailing Program this year! We were able to offer four sessions after the Governor opened Phase III of Virginia’s COVID-19 response. It was a community service because the parents of the sailors were eager to get them out of the house, and the kids were delighted to be outdoors and on the water – learning new things.

We are fortunate to have re-engaged Richard “Red” Eilenfield and his team of instructors from Paladin Sailing, Inc. to provide the instruction. This team is experienced, savvy and well-versed in tailoring the classes to the wide age groups included in each of the four sessions. The sessions involved sailors from 8 to 18 years old, with an equally wide range of sailing skills. Red and his team kept the more experienced sailors challenged while teaching the basics to those who were new to sailing. They learned on static displays of the Optis and Lasers and on seaworthy boats put together by Mike Webb and his team from the Club.

We have a total of 51 folks participating this year, including 2 adults who will hone their skills on Toby Ommundsen’s , while the more junior sailors work the smaller boats. Twelve of the sailors participated as the result of donations from Club members Tom and Fran Butterfoss, Art and Cindy Dister, Paul and Mary Hutter and Joe Borghese from the Boys and Girls Club. The children from the Boys and Girls Club were engaged and very grateful for the opportunity provided by SYC. Their enthusiasm, and that of all of the participants was infectious!

Many thanks to the members of the Boating Education Committee (Art Dister, Lynn Kelly, Toby Ommundsen, Bill Small, Doris Smoker, Mike and Jeanette Webb, and Bill Willshire) who put time, energy, and emergency efforts into making the program a success – despite the complications presented by COVID. Many thanks also to Kathy Moore and Jandy Strickland who signed the contract and paid the bills for the program.

Though the COVID situation made it prudent to cancel the Regatta this year, we are ready to pick up next year with the developing sailors we trained this summer. You see by the attached pictures that the program was a success!

LESLIE & TY Unfortunately the time has come to bid a fond farewell to Leslie Newton & Ty Walinski. They are PCSing to Japan! Leslie and Ty will be moving to Japan in September where Leslie will be stationed at Okinawa. Ty & Leslie were active at SYC attending events, dinner meetings, cruises, and more. Leslie was the former Semaphore Editor and Ty contributed articles to the Semaphore. They are always smiling and we will sure miss them! Good luck on your next chapter, Ty & Leslie! Thank you for your service to our country. Thank you for being a part of our SYC family. Keep in touch! Prop? Who needs a prop?

Well, a funny thing happened to Becky and me up in Mobjack Bay over the 4th of July Weekend.

Before I get to that I need to provide a little context to our story. As you know, our SYC 4th of July Cruise was cancelled due to that pesky Coronavirus. However, Mike Webb was determined a SYC sailing cruise would happen, and so it did. During the July Happy Hour (Corona be damned!) he hastily made a plan to cruise the rivers of Mobjack Bay. Mike and Jeanette Webb, Ben and Cheryl Huggins, Bill and Kelly Wilshire, along with Becky and I headed north to enjoy the Bay. Becky and I joined them Friday evening at the Mobjack Bay Marina. This is where things got interesting…

We pulled the Jabbykat up to the nearest dock (incident free…) and went to speak with the owner Darlene to acquire a slip for the night (by the way, if you haven’t gone to this marina you’re missing out: cheap slip fees and the best outdoor shower on the Bay). She directed us to a slip near the fire pit/BBQ area. We climbed back aboard the Jabbykat, started the engine, casted off and put her into reverse. But she didn’t go into reverse. Hmmm. Tried forward and that didn’t work either. Well, we were lucky enough to drift back towards the dock and were immediately assisted by the Webbs, the Huggins, and Hank, a local resident of the Marina. Troubleshooting began. “Your linkage to your transmission probably came loose.” Said Ben. Not having a great deal of experience with the transmission Ben climbed aboard and checked it for us (along with showing me where the transmission was!). “Linkage is fine.” Ben stated. Hmmm. Hank, our new friend said quietly, “You might want to see if you have a prop.” What?! Of course I have a prop! All boats with engines have a prop (okay, besides jet boats, got it…)! Just to prove him wrong I climbed over the side and checked our shaft. Sure enough, no prop. Nuts were still there, but no prop. Hmmm, now what?!

Well Mike and Ben reminded me it was happy hour so I had a beer (priorities!). We settled into our chairs on the dock to discuss our predicament (over drinks and hors d’oeuvres of course.). Our conversations drifted from the prop to other sailing subjects. About 11:00 pm we decided it was too late for dinner and we’ll figure out the prop problem in the morning.

Morning came. Ben offered to have one of his kids run an extra prop up from Poquoson but we couldn’t get a hold of a diver to put it on. What to do, what to do?? Hank informed us of favorable northeasterly winds for the day and reminded us we had alternate means of propulsion (sails!). Becky and I decided we would rather sail than be towed, so we gave it a shot. We also decided it was time to paint the hull as it was overdue so our destination was Wormley Creek Marina. So, with help from the Webbs, Huggins and our new friend Hank, we casted off the dock, launched the genny and headed southwest down the North River.

We thought, “Let’s sail as far as we can then call BoatUS for a tow.” Winds were steady at about 10 knots. We made it out of the North River, then the Mobjack Bay. All’s well. Although Mike recommended we not sail through the Swash Channel without an engine, we did anyway (ignorance is bliss!). After a few jibes we were clear of the Swash and heading up the York. Winds were picking up, now in the low teens so we were moving along nicely (faster when Becky’s at the helm…why does that always happen?). Becky and I thought, “How far do we go before calling for a tow?” We’ll figure it out…(yes, Becky, I’d love another beer). We kept sailing right up to the mouth of Wormley Creek. Should we attempt to sail through that tight channel? Hell, why not?! So we did. I had my eyes glued to the Garmin to stay within the skinny channel when Becky said, “I think we need to be more to starboard. That’s what everyone else is doing.” Nonsense, the Garmin said stay to port! After we pumped the bottom a few times I followed Becky’s advice and broke to starboard (don’t trust your nav in the Wormley Creek chan- nel. Follow the markers and the other boaters’ routes, and your first mate’s advice). A menacing thunderstorm was approaching from the northwest. Becky reefed the jib to ensure we weren’t going too fast. As we approached the marina, with only 50 yards to go, the wind completely died. Dead in the water. No problem. I quickly pressed into service a captain of a ski boat who pulled us to safety. Powerboaters are good for something after all. Who would’ve thought? The thunderstorm passed us by and all was well. We even had a few beers left!

Not sure what the moral or lesson of the story is, or if there is one, but it was one helluva sail on the Bay! Hopefully by the time this Semaphore is published the Jabbykat will have new bottom paint, and yeah, a prop.

- Submitted by Steve Riley- Despite SYC’s 4th of July Cruise being cancelled due to COVID, many of our members cruised. One group traveled to Mobjack Bay while another group cruised up the Chesapeake Bay to MD.

Denizen of the Deep is making a comeback in the Semaphore! Longtime members will remember this column and we hope all members will enjoy trying to figure out the person(s) behind the Denizen of the Deep! Great way to get to know things about members that you might not know.

Each month you will receive clues about a member(s) of the club and members will submit a guess who they think is this month’s Denizen of the Deep. Your guess will be submitted in a basket at the Monthly Dinner Meeting. The correct answers will be put into a drawing to win a prize at the dinner meeting.

Thank you to Tempy Barbru for agreeing to work on this column for the Semaphore! Please contact Tempy at [email protected] if you are interested in being highlighted as the Denizen of the Deep. (Don’t be surprised if she contacts you if we don’t get volunteers.) CAN YOU GUESS THE IDENTITY OF THIS SYC COUPLE? He was born in New Hampshire and she was born in Florida. They met in Goldsboro, North Carolina, sometime after he finished college in Georgia. She completed her college degree in North Carolina. Both were ambitious and adventurous and, even today, are always looking for the next big adventure.

An only child, he joined the army at seventeen and enjoyed his assignment in beautiful Hawaii. Moving through several careers, he worked on a hog farm and has been a manager at Lowe’s. Establishing his own business, he secured his real estate, appraisal and contracting licenses, so he was able to build, appraise and sell properties. After some years, he began his banking career and continued to stay active in Army reserves. He enjoys scuba diving, running, golf, and, of course, boating! She says he’s really good at skeet shooting and catching lobsters, but he’s not sure about that. Like he says, “I sing in the church choir, but I really only move my lips.”

She’s been either in or around the boating world most of her life. Her grandfather founded Bonito Boats, and her grandmother came up with the name for the company. Eventually, Bonito Boats were part of a lawsuit about hull patents (which her family was involved) that went all the way to the Supreme Court, which spurred legislation that protected hull manufacturing. She began her career as many of us have - a waitress while going to school. She also worked in a non-alcoholic casino in Cherokee, NC. She was the first person to go to college in her family, and enjoys exercise, reading, gardening and almost any kind of animal. She particularly loves manatees and adopted Boomer, a manatee and was thrilled to be able to swim with manatees on her birthday. In her day, she was a pretty incredible bowler – score of 299!!

They both love football – his team is the Georgia Bulldogs and hers is the Florida Gators, but they both root loudly for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Name the SYC couple! Submit your guess at our next dinner meeting! Look for the Denizen of the Deep basket and entry forms.

The following members were in attendance: Pete Showalter, John Leist , Brad Berry, Tina MacRitchie, Cecil Adcox, Jandy Strickland, Jimmy Richardson, Sandy Shem, Steve Riley, Donna Nitchie, Jerry Dooley

There were a total of 11 BOT members in attendance. It was noted that there was a quorum.

Jimmy Richardson is acting Secretary for taking minutes at this meeting in the place of Kathy Moore who was unable to attend. Secretary’s Report was brought up. A motion was made by Donna Nitchie and seconded by Steve Riley to accept the Secretary’s report as presented. Motion Passed Unanimously

The Treasurer presented her report. A motion was made by Cecil Adcox and Seconded by Tina MacRitchie to accept the Treasurer’s report as presented. Motion Passed Unanimously.

Update from the Building committee: There was a final walk-through of the construction and reviewing the punch list.

Insurance Update presented by Brad Berry: Morgan Marrow gave us a new quote that covered the building, a better blanket coverage on outbuildings and even some not previously covered. If we were to raise the elevation of the outside A/C units, the club could experience even better insurance rates. The quote lowered our premium about $3,000.00. We are also getting about 39% more coverage and we will have a local agent that will be easier to contact. Our previous insurance agent was contacted to provide a quote, but one was never presented and it was difficult to make contact by phone. A motion was made by Jerry Dooley and seconded by Steve Riley to approve the new insurance carrier. Motion passed unanimously. It was also noted that when our flood insurance is due, new quotes will be obtained to see if a savings can be made.

Report on the Flag Raising: Cecil Adcox reported that the event went well. Signage was added. Tables were spread out and members were spread out. The total cost was approximately $1345.64. That included the box lunches, decorations, and beverages. 85 people attended.

Advertising update: Jerry Dooley reported an ad that was placed cost $30. The intent is to generate new member applications and boat slip availability.

Old Business: One member brought up to the Commodore possible slip rate discrepancies. John Leist suggested that the dock master and his committee come up with some ideas as they did earlier in the year. The issue was tabled until next year and it was suggested that the dock committee review this.

New Business: COVID 19 and SYC events: It was stated that the club will follow Phase III Guidelines as we want to keep our club safe.

New member application: Bob and Linda Reviea. A motion was made by Steve Riley and Seconded by Brad Berry to accept the Reviea’s as new members. Motion Passed Unanimously.

Discussion came up about the Summer Party and the dinner to be held on July 21st was brought up by Donna Nitchie. The discussion centered on SYC COVID response and guidelines for the meetings. Donna made a motion to set up guidelines for COVID for the club to follow and to appoint a coordinator. No second was initially made as there was a discussion on the topic. The main jest was to have a coordinator to identify COVID related issues. Donna stated she even had a volunteer to do this. It was brought up that the Governor already had guidelines out in his 40-50 page document. The Commodore mentioned that only a small section, 1-2 pages of the guidelines, were for Social Gatherings (as we do at the Club). The Commodore stated that he would email the Committees and the Club about what we were going to do for the July 23 Dinner Meeting to be safe with COVID precautions, basically what we will do as a Club. Donna brought up that there was a motion on the floor. The motion was then seconded by Sandy Shem and a vote was conducted. Motion failed 5 votes for and 6 votes against.
