[Grand Prix Formule 1 van Nederland 1983 Na veel moeite te hebben gehad tijdens de kwalificatie, vond het McLaren- team, zoals ze in al vaker hadden gedaan , hun weg op de racedag, toen John Watson en Niki Lauda klommen van plaats 22 en 23 op de grid om als eerste en tweede te eindigen in de finale United. Grand Prix West in Long Beach. Opnieuw was het circuit enigszins aangepast, voornamelijk om Ocean Boulevard, een van de belangrijkste verkeersaders van de stad, vrij te maken. Sommige teams waren bang dat de vering van hun auto's onder raceomstandigheden niet langer zou duren dan een paar ronden. René Arnoux Ferrari was de eerste die over de hobbels ging en zijn 1: Nachtelijke reparatiewerkzaamheden hebben de problematische hobbels gladgestreken. Tambay pakte zijn eerste pole met een ronde van 1: De McLarens van Watson en Lauda waren nooit in staat om tot een evenwichtige opstelling te komen, en ze zouden starten op de 22e en 23e positie. De race vond plaats in warme en zonnige omstandigheden. Tambay hield de leiding in de eerste bocht. Rosberg, vlak achter hem, probeerde zich door het midden van de volledig Ferrari- eerste rij te wringen. Rosberg spinde later in de ronde terwijl hij probeerde in te halen, maar vervolgde zonder schade. Na één ronde stond Sullivan zesde, achter Arnoux, en Cheever negende, direct achter Prost. Sullivan werd in de tweede ronde gepasseerd door Patrese en vervolgens door Prost en Cheever in de derde ronde. Het duurde echter niet lang voordat Prost terugviel met een mislukking die hem het hele weekend herhaaldelijk had geteisterd, en hij kwam uiteindelijk in ronde 16 terecht. Cheever was in staat om Arnoux en Patrese te passeren toen Arnoux de grip begon te verliezen van zijn Goodyears , en was op naar de vijfde plaats. Toen Cheever echter de Renault-pit binnenging voor een nieuwe set banden, ontdekte hij dat de bemanning nog aan de auto van Prost werkte; hij werd gedwongen door te gaan. Het probleem van Prost was uiteindelijk opgelost en hij reed door, zij het met drie ronden achterstand. Ondertussen had Rosberg de tweede plaats achter Tambay herwonnen en zocht in ronde 20 opnieuw een weg. De top zes auto's waren allemaal draait zeer dicht bij elkaar, en Rosberg bevond zich al snel onder toenemende druk van Laffite, die was op zijn beurt opgejaagd door Jean-Pierre Jarier 's Ligier en Patrese's Brabham. In ronde 26 probeerde Rosberg opnieuw de leiding te nemen, maar kwam in botsing met Tambay, die ronddraaide en tot stilstand kwam. Rosberg ging weer verder en reed rond de buitenkant van de gehandicapte auto. De twee Williams-auto's raakten elkaar kort en Jarier rende tegen de achterkant van Rosberg, die tegen de muur botste, er weer vanaf stuiterde en weer raakte voordat hij tot stilstand kwam. Jarier ging door, maar slechts kort, omdat een beschadigde voorvleugel zijn weggedrag had bedorven en hij stopte in de pits. Laffite stond nu aan de leiding, met Patrese op de tweede plaats. Toen Watson aan het einde van Shoreline Drive door Lauda kwam, had hij twintig seconden achterstand op de twee leiders. Met Watson die het gat naar voren dichtde en de banden van Laffite snel af gingen, daagde Patrese Laffite uit voor de leiding. Hij gleed wijd en Watson en Lauda kwamen allebei voorbij voordat hij weer bij de baan kwam. Kort daarna passeerden de McLarens ook Laffite en waren vanaf de 22ste en 23ste op de grid nu eerste en tweede. Terwijl Laffite nog steeds worstelde met zijn banden, kon Patrese hem weer inhalen en werd derde in ronde Arnoux kwam terug door het veld na een tweede bandenstop en voerde de strijd met Cheever om de vijfde plaats toen ze Laffite tegenkwamen. Bij de haarspeldbocht wisselden de Williams en Ferrari van plaats rond Cheever, want Arnoux ging van de zesde naar de vierde in een bocht. In de volgende ronde verloor Cheever echter de vijfde plaats toen hij wegreed met een kapotte versnellingsbak. Met nog maar drie ronden te gaan stopte Patrese van de derde plaats toen zijn distributeur brak. De half gepensioneerde wereldkampioen van , de Australiër Alan Jones, verving de reguliere Arrows- coureur Chico Serra voor de race in wat een kortstondige comeback in de Formule 1 zou blijken te zijn. Na kwalificatie voor een geloofwaardige 12e plaats op de grid in de door Cosworth aangedreven Arrows A6 , reed Jones in de top 10 tot hij in ronde 58 met vermoeidheid stopte. Jones, die alleen thuis in Australië had geracet sinds hij na het seizoen met pensioen ging bij F1 , leed nog steeds aan de gevolgen van een val van een paard op zijn boerderij een paar maanden eerder, waarbij hij zijn heup had gebroken. Arnoux kwam door als derde, en Laffite bleef als vierde behouden, voor Surer en Cecotto, die een punt scoorden in zijn tweede F1-race.
