Page 6 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine June 2018 Stuff Dutch People Like

“Stuff Dutch People Like” is a column written by an Australian expatriate living in the Netherlands. This amusing column observes the Dutch in their everyday life. We hope that you enjoy reading “Stuff Dutch People Like” as much as we do. The blog is available via the internet.

Dairy. Dutch people like milk products, a lot. Even if you know very little about Dutch people or have just arrived in the Netherlands, you will soon observe the Dutch’s predilection for dairy. Need proof of their penchant? Just look at the height of ’em! The Dutch tower amongst the world’s tallest of folks. Correction; the tallest people in the world. The average adult in the Netherlands is 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m). But wait, there’s more. Dutch people’s height appears to be contagious; Immigrants living in the Netherlands are taller, on average, than their racial groups in their countries of origin. Wonder why? The love of all-things-dairy of course!

In North America, milk is primarily child’s play. Step into any Dutch corporate lunchroom and you will be confronted by rows of Dutch men, in suits, happily slurping cartons of milk like it was going out of style! (I thought it already had?) It is important to note that not all milk in the lowlands is created equal: “Karnemelk”, the Dutch answer to Buttermilk, is by far the most popular of milky varieties. SDPL TIP: “Trying to blend in with the locals? Pair a simple cheese sandwich with a carton of Karnemelk and you are now consuming the nation’s most popular luncheon meal! An added bonus, you might just sprout an extra few inches!”

After all, as the popular Dutch television advertisements proclaim: “Melk Moet” (milk is a must)!

Page 7 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine June 2018 The King’s Maas & Waal Borrel Night Maas & Waal Borrel Night. On Friday the 27th of April Neerlandia held its monthly Maas and Waal Borrel Night. But this day was a very special one as it coincided with the birthday of our King “Willem-Alexander”. About 180 Members and Guests attended this evening and the sheer numbers created a very friendly and “gezellige” atmosphere. Add to this the Children’s “Vrijmarkt”, that with the colourful display of many blankets on the dance floor, was pretty sight to see. The way the Children presented their surplus toys and games was excellent. A pity that there were not too many other Children present, to snap up some bargains and it was left to the Opa’s and Oma’s to buy them for their Children or Grand-Children. The Kitchen did a roaring trade, with the queue waiting to place food orders at one stage reaching outside the front door. And kitchen staff were still running around delivering food at 8.30pm. Dress up in Orange was asked for. This lovely girl A very successful event indeed. Isa-Bo Haanskorf had my vote for Queen of the Pieter L. (L.M.) Ball.

Page 9 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine June 2018 Neerlandia Seniors’ Club

Welcome to the Neerlandia Seniors’ Club page. It was very sad to see that 2 of our long-time Members, Eddy Michielsen and Ferdi Klesch passed away recently. Our thoughts are with their families. John Gloudie turned 94 and in his honour, a song by an 94 year old Scotchman, was played on an old “His Masters Voice” gramophone, as shown in the right hand top photo. On the 10th of May we celebrated Mothers Day for all the ladies and they were all presented with a beautiful Cyclamen in a pot, which will keep for many years to come. You can see some of them also in the right hand photo’s below. We celebrated the Dutch King, Willem-Alexander’s Birthday in Orange on Thursday, the 26th of April, as you would have noticed on the photo’s. A great day ! ! ! 64 Members on Thursday 26th of April. 57 Members on Thursday 10th of May.

Page 23 The Dutch in WA Neerlandia Magazine June 2018 The Vestingstad (Fortified City) of Naarden Naarden is a City and former Municipality in the Gooi region in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. It has been part of the new Municipality of “Gooise Meren” since 2016. Naarden was granted its City rights in 1300. Flag and Coat of Arms of Naarden. History. In the 9th Century AD, at the time of the Vikings, a small Town of Fishermen and Traders, called Naarden was first mentioned in documents. But it was not situated on the present location, as the original Naarden was swallowed by the sea. During the 13th and 14th Centuries, a couple of monstrous storms swept over Holland. Hundreds of thousands acres of land were washed away, and a giant inland sea was created; the Southern Sea (Zuiderzee). The Town was abandoned and “given to the sea” in the year 1350. Surprisingly swiftly, the refugees created a complete new Town, a couple of miles inland on higher ground. It rapidly became the regional Capital and a prosperous merchant Town and Centre of the booming textile industry. Being of strategic importance, Naarden suffered more destruction and misery. In the beginning of the Dutch Eighty-Years-War of independence in 1572, when an invading Spanish army on a punitive expedition, burned it to the ground and massacred most citizens, Women and Children included. A few years later the Town was build up once again and gradually surrounded by an elaborate defence system to protect the eastern flank of Amsterdam. Today Naarden is one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe, with its typical star shaped form, a spectacular sight from the air and on a satellite picture. Attractions. Naarden is the home of the Netherlands Fortress Museum (Nederlands Vestingmuseum). Naarden hosts the bi-annual Naarden Photo Festival. The Great Church (Grote Kerk) or St. Vitus Church is situated on the Markstraat and dates from the 15th century. Prior to the Protestant Reformation it was named the St. Vitus Church. It is one of the oldest

The Church has numerous wooden vaults that are painted with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. These were hidden for many years and were only rediscovered in a recent restoration. The Church is the venue for a number of cultural activities such as organ music nights and the bi-annual Naarden Photo festival.

It is situated on the shores of the Gooimeer (lake) and is part of the City of Naarden. It consists partly of woodland and meadows and has a closed Villa Community, also referred to as "Naarderwoonbos". This community consists of approx. 180 villas, which each having its own boat pier as well as a public 18 hole golf course. The Naarderbos is a forest that was planted in 1980. It consists mostly of oak, chestnut and beech-wood trees and it has many pathways for walking, as well as picnic areas. The Naarderbos is about 20 km southeast of Amsterdam. Naarderbos also has a wild variety of animals. There is a family of storks that live there and visit during the summer.

The Spanish fired (insideon the gate)assembled Citizens and went on to set fire to the Town. A plaque above the lintel of the door and below the eaves commemorates the massacre. In 1615, after the population had re-established itself and they built the City Hall on the site. Part of the building was given over to De Waag (The Scales House), the Municipal Office entrusted with the verification of weights and measures. The building later served a French garrison as a bakery, turning out over 1000 loaves per day. From 1967 until 1992 it served as the Comenius Museum. Today, the historic building serves as the Weegschaal Museum. . Compiled from the Internet by Pieter Leeflang.
