Key words National 5 musical concepts occur in red. Those in blue indicate words that might be helpful in an internet search if you want to research a concept or topic further.
Time coding/further information In instances where a concept occurs at a specific point in a piece of music, a time code is given to indicate this point. For example, a time code of 0.23 means that the concept can be found 23 seconds into the piece. In music where there could be a slight variation in the time code (for example due to speed variations in different performances of the same piece of music), the letter ‘c.’ precedes the code (an abbreviation of the word circa, meaning ‘approximately’). In the example below, for instance, we are informed that the musical concept sequence occurs in Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto in D minor, opus 8, number 9, movement 1, at approximately 1 minute and 18 seconds into the movement. We are also given the further information that the sequence is played by strings at this point.
