GENERAL MUSIC Grade 3
GENERAL MUSIC Grade 3 Course Overview: Grade 3 students will engage in a wide variety of music activities, including singing, playing instruments, and dancing. Music notation is addressed through reading rhythm subdivisions to sixteenth notes, multiple beat notations, and reading five note melodic notations on a five line staff. They also continue building the foundation of musical vocabulary. NOTE: Throughout this document, learning target types are identified as knowledge (“K”), reasoning (“R”), skill (“S”), or product (“P”). NATIONAL STANDARD 1: Students sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Benchmark 1: Students sing independently, on pitch and in rhythm, with appropriate timbre, diction, and posture, and maintain a steady tempo. Learning Targets (Type): 1) I can label a melody that moves by step, skip, or repeat when I listen to a so n g or sing a song. (R) 2) I can identify steps, skips, and repeats when I see them on a treble staff. (K) 3) I can play the steady beat with body percussion or on an instrument when I sing a song. (S) 4) I can play the melodic rhythm of the song using body percussion or unpitched percussion instruments. (S) Benchmark 2: Students sing expressively, with appropriate dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation. Learning Targets (Type): 1) I can make and perform a dynamic plan for a song using p, mp, mf, and f. (S) 2) I can count the number of phrases in a song. (K) Benchmark 3: Students sing from memory a varied repertoire of songs representing genres and styles from diverse cultures. Learning Targets (Type): 1) I can sing holiday music from around the world in December. -

He was hosted by the Institute of Philosophy, Education and the Study of Religions, and he continues to be an active member of the SDU cross-disciplinary research group The Aesthetics of Music and Sound. Westney was the top piano prize-winner of the Geneva International Competition, and he appeared thereafter as soloist with such major orchestras as l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Houston, San Antonio and New Haven Symphonies. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College in New York and a Masters and Doctorate in performance from Yale University, all with highest honors. During his study in Italy under a Fulbright grant he was the only American winner in auditions held by Radiotelevisione Italiana. It is almost as if you are preparing to enter the Tchaikovsky Competition.” I asked him to keep it under his hat – it is never good for people to know in advance of your competition efforts, in case it doesn’t work out. Set off home at 11.00 p.m. The car –a Vauxhall Viva borrowed from my parents-in-law – broke down after about 10 miles of a 120 mile journey to my in-laws on the Wirral. Still in the Lake District countryside. The weather was appallingly wet. I had to get to the Wirral, and then the next morning to Manchester for an early flight to London to connect with the Aeroflot flight to Moscow. 09 June 1982 Thank God for the AA Relay service. They got me to the Wirral in the cab of one of their trucks, with the car on the back. -

The Group-theoretic Description of Musical Pitch Systems Marcus Pearce [email protected] 1 Introduction Balzano (1980, 1982, 1986a,b) addresses the question of finding an appropriate level for describing the resources of a pitch system (e.g., the 12-fold or some microtonal division of the octave). His motivation for doing so is twofold: “On the one hand, I am interested as a psychologist who is not overly impressed with the progress we have made since Helmholtz in understanding music perception. On the other hand, I am interested as a computer musician who is trying to find ways of using our pow- erful computational tools to extend the musical [domain] of pitch . ” (Balzano, 1986b, p. 297) Since the resources of a pitch system ultimately depend on the pairwise relations between pitches, the question is one of how to conceive of pitch intervals. In contrast to the prevailing approach which de- scribes intervals in terms of frequency ratios, Balzano presents a description of pitch sets as mathematical groups and describes how the resources of any pitch system may be assessed using this description. Thus he is concerned with presenting an algebraic description of pitch systems as a competitive alternative to the existing acoustic description. In these notes, I shall first give a brief description of the ratio based approach (§2) followed by an equally brief exposition of some necessary concepts from the theory of groups (§3). The following three sections concern the description of the 12-fold division of the octave as a group: §4 presents the nature of the group C12; §5 describes three perceptually relevant properties of pitch-sets in C12; and §6 describes three musically relevant isomorphic representations of C12. -

March 2004 TILSON THOMAS LEADS SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY IN PREMIERE OF HOLLOWAY/DEBUSSY EN BLANC ET NOIR Thursday, March 11, marks the world premiere of an orchestration by Robin Holloway of Claude Debussy’s En blanc et noir. Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall; the program is repeated on March 12 and 13. En blanc et noir will be performed by the San Francisco Symphony on tour in Kansas City (3/16), Cleveland (3/18), New York (3/23 at Carnegie Hall), Philadelphia (3/24), and Newark (3/26). loyal and persuasive The San Francisco Symphony has consistently championed Holloway’s advocates music. In addition to commissioning En blanc et noir, the ensemble has commissioned and premiered Holloway’s Clarissa Sequence (1998), and given the American premieres of his Viola Concerto and Third Concerto for Orchestra. En blanc et noir, originally composed for piano duo in 1915, is a product of Debussy’s late period, marked by an austere beauty that stands in contrast to the lushness of better-known, earlier works such as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, La Mer, and the Nocturnes. In orchestrating En blanc et noir, Holloway hopes to bring this seldom performed three-movement work to a wider audience. black and white, As program annotator Michael Steinberg points out, Holloway is in color acutely aware of the irony of coloring a work whose title specifi- cally calls attention to the black-and-whiteness of the piano key- board. Early in 1916, Debussy wrote to his friend Robert Godet: “These pieces draw their color, their emotion, simply from the piano, like the ‘grays’ of Velasquez, if I may so suggest?” Holloway conceives of his orchestration as an “opening out” of the music’s physical resonance, almost as though this were the freeing of a piece that has yearned to be an orchestral work all along.
