HOLLOWAY/DEBUSSY EN BLANC ET NOIR Thursday, March 11, Marks the World Premiere of an Orchestration by Robin Holloway of Claude Debussy’S En Blanc Et Noir March 2004 TILSON THOMAS LEADS SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY IN PREMIERE OF HOLLOWAY/DEBUSSY EN BLANC ET NOIR Thursday, March 11, marks the world premiere of an orchestration by Robin Holloway of Claude Debussy’s En blanc et noir. Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall; the program is repeated on March 12 and 13. En blanc et noir will be performed by the San Francisco Symphony on tour in Kansas City (3/16), Cleveland (3/18), New York (3/23 at Carnegie Hall), Philadelphia (3/24), and Newark (3/26). loyal and persuasive The San Francisco Symphony has consistently championed Holloway’s advocates music. In addition to commissioning En blanc et noir, the ensemble has commissioned and premiered Holloway’s Clarissa Sequence (1998), and given the American premieres of his Viola Concerto and Third Concerto for Orchestra. En blanc et noir, originally composed for piano duo in 1915, is a product of Debussy’s late period, marked by an austere beauty that stands in contrast to the lushness of better-known, earlier works such as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, La Mer, and the Nocturnes. In orchestrating En blanc et noir, Holloway hopes to bring this seldom performed three-movement work to a wider audience. black and white, As program annotator Michael Steinberg points out, Holloway is in color acutely aware of the irony of coloring a work whose title specifi- cally calls attention to the black-and-whiteness of the piano key- board. Early in 1916, Debussy wrote to his friend Robert Godet: “These pieces draw their color, their emotion, simply from the piano, like the ‘grays’ of Velasquez, if I may so suggest?” Holloway conceives of his orchestration as an “opening out” of the music’s physical resonance, almost as though this were the freeing of a piece that has yearned to be an orchestral work all along. The orchestration is not, Holloway stresses, “à la manière de Debussy” — for one thing, there is no orchestral piece by Debussy in his late style to serve as model — “but it has to be a homage and in the spirit of Debussy.”.

2017 Preview Notes • Week Four • Persons Auditorium Saturday, August 5 at 8:00pm En blanc et noir (1915) Claude Debussy Born August 22, 1862 • Died March 25, 1918 Duration: approx. 15 minutes • Marlboro Premiere Denounced by Saint-Saëns as the aural equivalent of Cubist artwork, this piano duet indeed renders familiar subjects in unexpected and fragmented ways. Each movement is dedicated to a different person and paired with an epigraph, and that the richness of the written music, accompanying texts, and piano keys themselves—all black and white—contribute to the many colors of the piece is one example of Debussy’s wit. The first movement, a reimagined waltz, is dedicated to Serge Koussevitzky, who is remembered as a great champion of contemporary music. The second movement’s suggestion of distant bugle calls laced with quotations from the hymn “Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott” is a haunting homage to Debussy’s friend Jacques Charlot, who perished in WWI. The work concludes with a rippling scherzando dedicated to Igor Stravinsky. Participants: Xiaohui Yang, piano; Cynthia Raim, piano Voices of Angels (1996) Brett Dean, in-residence 2017 Born October 23, 1961 Duration: approx. 25 minutes • Marlboro Premiere Brett Dean is no stranger to working with great literary texts, having just premiered his second opera, Hamlet, this summer at Glyndebourne. Like the Debussy, this piece is prefaced by an epigraph. Dean quotes the first of Rilke’s ten Duino Elegies: “Angels (it’s said) are often unable to tell whether they move/amongst the living or the dead. An eternal current/hurtles all ages through both realms for ever, and drowns out their voices in both.” As the elegy questions the conventional distinctions between beauty and terror, life and the afterlife, myth and reality, so does Dean’s composition introduce a range of seemingly contradictory perspectives.

Debussy Perspectives, 1918-2018 RNCM, Manchester Monday, 19 March Paper session A: Debussy’s Style in History, Conference Room, 2.00-5.00 Chair: Marianne Wheeldon 2.00-2.30 – Mark DeVoto (Tufts University), ‘Debussy’s Evolving Style and Technique in Rodrigue et Chimène’ Claude Debussy’s Rodrigue et Chimène, on which he worked for two years in 1891-92 before abandoning it, is the most extensive of more than a dozen unfinished operatic projects that occupied him during his lifetime. It can also be regarded as a Franco-Wagnerian opera in the same tradition as Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys (1888), Chabrier’s Gwendoline (1886), d’Indy’s Fervaal (1895), and Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus (1895), representing part of the absorption of the younger generation of French composers in Wagner’s operatic ideals, harmonic idiom, and quasi-medieval myth; yet this kinship, more than the weaknesses of Catulle Mendès’s libretto, may be the real reason that Debussy cast Rodrigue aside, recognising it as a necessary exercise to be discarded before he could find his own operatic voice (as he soon did in Pelléas et Mélisande, beginning in 1893). The sketches for Rodrigue et Chimène shed considerable light on the evolution of Debussy’s technique in dramatic construction as well as his idiosyncratic approach to tonal form. Even in its unfinished state — comprising three out of a projected four acts — the opera represents an impressive transitional stage between the Fantaisie for piano and orchestra (1890) and the full emergence of his genius, beginning with the String Quartet (1893) and the Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune (1894).

It is my oxygen.” (Francis Poulenc on Debussy) A unique voice in classical music, Claude Debussy exercised widespread influence over later generations of composers, both in his native France and elsewhere, including Messiaen, Cage and Bartók. His music combines late nineteenth- century Romanticism with a soundscape that exudes evocative imagery. This catalogue contains an impressive collection of works by this master composer: piano music, ranging from his ever-popular Clair de lune to the light-hearted Children’s Corner Suite; examples of his influential orchestral music, including Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and La Mer; the exquisite opera Pelléas et Mélisande, and much more. © 2018 Naxos Rights US, Inc. 1 of 2 LABEL CATALOGUE # COMPOSER TITLE FEATURED ARTISTS UPC A Musical Journey DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 2.110544 FRANCE: A Musical Tour of Provence Various Artists 747313554454 (1862–1918) Music by Debussy and Ravel [DVD] DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.556663 BEST OF DEBUSSY Various Artists 0730099666329 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Cello Recital – Cello Sonata Tatjana Vassiljeva, Cello / Naxos 8.555762 0747313576227 (1862–1918) (+STRAVINSKY / BRITTEN / DUTILLEUX) Yumiko Arabe, Piano DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.556788 Chill With Debussy Various Artists 0730099678827 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Clair de lune and Other Piano Favorites • Naxos 8.555800 Francois-Joël Thiollier, Piano 0747313580026 (1862–1918) Arabesques • Reflets dans l'eau DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.509002 Complete Orchestral Works [9CDs Boxed Set] Various Artists 747313900237 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Early Works for Piano Duet – Naxos 8.572385 Ivo Haah, Adrienne Soos, Piano 747313238576 (1862–1918) Printemps • Le triomphe de Bacchus • Symphony in B Minor DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.578077-78 Easy-Listening Piano Classics (+RAVEL) [2CDs] Various Artists 747313807772 (1862–1918) DEBUSSY, Claude Naxos 8.572472 En blanc et noir (+MESSIAEN) Håkon Austbø, Ralph van Raat, Piano 747313247271 (1862–1918) Four-Hand Piano Music, Vol.

In Bertrand Dermoncourt’s L’ univers de l’opéra, the opening lines of the entry on Debussy read: He who became, by some regrettable nationalistic twist, known as ‘Claude de France’ - as if his music embodied the national cultural identity - was in many respects an atypical artist in the French musical landscape of his time.1 These two statements evoke an apparent contradiction in the last creative phase of this fascinating composer: how his yearning to contribute in a meaningful way to the war effort ended up with the composition of works whose features, both formal and stylistic, display the sort of modernism that was castigated in nationalist discourses.
