How to Reach Sofitel Brussels Europe How to reach the hotel from the Schuman metro station? On foot (approximately 5 minutes) When leaving the metro station you will see the Schuman roundabout. There you have to take Rue Froissart until Place Jourdan. On your right-hand side you will see Sofitel Brussels Europe. (Please consult attachment 1 on page 4.) How to reach the hotel by taxi? When leaving the airport or the train station through the main entrance, you will always be able to find a taxi who will take you to the Sofitel Brussels Europe in approximately 20 minutes and the price is around € 40 depending on traffic. (Please consult attachment 2 on page 5.) How to reach the hotel from the Brussels International Airport? By train & by metro (approximately 35 minutes) At the airport (floor -1), you take the “Brussels Airport Express” to Brussels Central station (2nd stop). When arriving at the central train station you need to go to the metro station where you have to take one of the following subways: Line 1 (direction Stockel), until station Schuman (4th stop) or Line 5 (direction Hermann-Debroux), until station Schuman (4th stop) Prices are: Train ticket 1 journey : € 6,50 Metro ticket 1 journey (presales) : € 2,00 (Please consult attachment 3 on page 6.)     Une «flamandisation» de Bruxelles? Alice Romainville Université Libre de Bruxelles RÉSUMÉ Les médias francophones, en couvrant l'actualité politique bruxelloise et à la faveur des (très médiatisés) «conflits» communautaires, évoquent régulièrement les volontés du pouvoir flamand de (re)conquérir Bruxelles, voire une véritable «flamandisation» de la ville. Cet article tente d'éclairer cette question de manière empirique à l'aide de diffé- rents «indicateurs» de la présence flamande à Bruxelles. L'analyse des migrations entre la Flandre, la Wallonie et Bruxelles ces vingt dernières années montre que la population néerlandophone de Bruxelles n'est pas en augmentation. D'autres éléments doivent donc être trouvés pour expliquer ce sentiment d'une présence flamande accrue. Une étude plus poussée des migrations montre une concentration vers le centre de Bruxelles des migrations depuis la Flandre, et les investissements de la Communauté flamande sont également, dans beaucoup de domaines, concentrés dans le centre-ville. On observe en réalité, à défaut d'une véritable «flamandisation», une augmentation de la visibilité de la communauté flamande, à la fois en tant que groupe de population et en tant qu'institution politique. Le «mythe de la flamandisation» prend essence dans cette visibilité accrue, mais aussi dans les réactions francophones à cette visibilité. L'article analyse, au passage, les différentes formes que prend la présence institutionnelle fla- mande dans l'espace urbain, et en particulier dans le domaine culturel, lequel présente à Bruxelles des enjeux particuliers.     BRUSSELS METRO TO GROW … AS PRE-METRO SHRINKS by Geoffrey Skelsey The recent announcement that preliminary work was to start on the extension of Brussels Metro line 3, and the conversion to Metro operation of the existing tram-worked pre-metro line, makes it timely to review the story of the line, and of the pre-metro concept. This will be the latest development in a conversion programme which began in 1976 on line 1, followed in 1988 on line 2. THE BIRTH OF THE ‘PRE-METRO’. The pre-metro is often thought to have originated in Belgium and (West) Germany, but it is a sad reflection on a lack of impetus in British transport projects that amongst the earliest formulations of a system of tram subways linking segregated suburban feeder lines occurred in Leeds and Glasgow around the end of the Second World War. The Leeds transport manager, W. Vane Morland, after pre- war study tours in Sweden and Boston, drew up proposals in 1944 for intersecting tunnels below the city centre leading to a network of high-quality suburban tramways (or ‘light rail lines’ as they would now be called). The city went some way towards achieving the second part of the project, with ‘express’ tramways extending east and south of the city, and other planned, some of which were completed as late as 1949. Exploratory work was undertaken by the City Engineer, including trial borings for tunnels extending east-west and north-south, with a two-level interchange station below City Square. In 1948 Eric Fitzpayne, Glasgow’s enterprising transport manager, produced similar plans, with the important addition of proposals to reuse underexploited local railways with tram-type vehicles.

The bomb in the train (made from TATP explosives) exploded in the second carriage of a four carriage train as it started to leave the Maalbeek station. The attack took place about an hour after the bombings took place in Brussels Airport. The perpetrators belonged to the terrorist cell Islamic State (IS) of Iraq. Personal damage - number of injured persons: > 300 Personal damage - number of killed persons: 32 (20 pers. in metro station, 12 pers. in the metro) + 3 suicide bombers Material damage: No information available. Impact on operation: After the explosion in Maalbeek at 9:11 a.m., Brussels Metro was subsequently shut down at 09:27. The station Maalbeek was closed for over a month following the attacks.
