I am eternally grateful to them. Titilayo T. Nwaokoro APRIL 2013 iv ABSTRACT Patriarchal system dominated traditional Ondo society as reflected in the preference for the education of boys. Despite the influence of modernity which leveraged the women with equal opportunity of education with men, existing literature on Ondo have not adequately addressed the issue of women education in the town. This study, therefore, examines the historical dynamics of women education and its impact on the society at the micro and macro levels between 1875 and 2008. George Peter Murdock and Ann Oakley’s Sex and Gender analysis, complemented with Anthony Gidden’s Theory of Social Change was adopted as the theoretical framework for this study. Primary data used for this study include archival materials (Intelligence Reports and Ondo Provincial Files at the National Archives, Ibadan), school records and oral interviews. The purposive and snowball interview approaches were adopted. Informants include professionals, education officers, traditional title holders, school girls and parents. Secondary data consist of books and other print materials, including theses and dissertations. Photographs and almanacs related to women education in Ondo were also utilized. Data were subjected to historical analysis to reflect changing trends. From inception of Western education in 1875 to 1906 when Ondo formally came under British colonial rule, girls’ enrollment in primary schools was less than 20%. From 1906 to 1953, secondary education for girls was non-existent, though boys had been enjoying this since 1919. The implication is that women were excluded from all levels of colonial administration because of the apparent educational disparity. From 1954 to 2008, there had been a tremendous change in women education, especially with government policy on free and compulsory Universal Primary Education in 1955 and the founding of three girls’ colleges in 1954, 1955 and 1985 respectively. Expanded female education led to women’s increasing participation in politics and professions formerly considered reserved for men. Over the years, women came to dominate nursing and teaching but fewer in medicine, engineering and other science-based professions. Before independence, female percentage in nursing was about 35% and medicine less than 3%. By 2008, it had risen to about 80% and 40% respectively. In teaching, the percentage in 1960 was about 30% in Primary schools and 13% in Secondary schools. By 2008, it had increased to about 90% and 65% respectively. Despite women’s educational advancement, Ondo society remains essentially male-dominated and the society continues to perceive women in relation to their domestic roles as indicated in interviews conducted. This reinforces the argument that rather than being the inventors of gender binary, colonialism only exacerbated an already contrary condition. Expanded female education and consequent participation in the labour market has led to financial emancipation and improved status for women, but the full social identity of the woman is hampered by the patriarchal nature of the Ondo Society. There is therefore a need for cultural re- orientation in the reality of persisting male dominance in Ondo. Keywords: Women education, Gender, Patriarchy, Social change, Ondo.     Ethnic Identity and Nineteenth-Century Yoruba Warfare Olatunji Ojo (York University, Toronto) In the nineteenth century Yorubaland was characterized by revolutionary political and economic changes. These changes stemmed from a series of constitutional and other socio-economic disruptions, initially in Oyo and later in other districts. The weakening of Oyo’s central administration after 1800, exacerbated by the spread of Islam and the expansion of legitimate trade generated rapid political changes, the most important of which was the century-long Yoruba wars.1 Yoruba warfare has attracted substantial scholarship. Some writers attribute the wars to attempts by various states to fill the vacuum created by the fall of Oyo. To this group, the wars were fallouts of state formation processes in Africa.2 The other school or the Anthony Hopkins/Economic school links the wars to global economic movements, especially those associated with falling revenue from trade in slaves, and later palm oil.3 This paper, while bridging the two schools identifies a third issue: identity crisis. Peoples and communities occupied different strata within the social system. People were also classified based on ethnicity, class, age and even gender. Each of these identities or a combination of two or more dominated the course of the nineteenth century Yoruba history. Therefore, whether with warfare, slavery, religious observations, and property ownership, there were issues over who were the combatants? Who could be enslaved or not and who could be killed at religious functions? The ways in which people identified themselves, and how others identified them were at stake in discussions about political control, religious rituals, property relation and how people fought against the status quo.

It is my hope that the compilation of this relatively comprehensive bibliography, and a brief discussion of some of the gaps that need to be filled in the literature, will inspire scholars to take their historical research in exciting and novel directions. Based on a reading of this bibliography, I would like to suggest that future research into the history of Christianity in Nigeria should be directed in three broad directions. First, historians need to focus more research on the development of mainline mission churches following independence, because the historiography remains skewed in favor of independent churches.

This is largely illustrative of the popularity of the deity as an integral aspect of cultural heritage and as a vehicle for social cohesion. However, the poetic aspect of how Ogun deity is worshipped during Ogun festival by the Yoruba particularly the Ondo people, demands a deeper religious appreciation on which researchers of comparative mythology and religion have not done enough. This thus constitutes the subject of this paper. The paper, therefore, focuses on the exploration of the literary and poetic aspects of Ogun deity in relation to Ogun festival in Ondoland. It further examines the origin and role of Ogun deity in Yorubaland, Ogun in Ondo, the cultural basis of Ogun in Ondo, cardinal attributes of Ogun deity, role of worshippers in Ogun festival, mode of worship and its importance, Ogun and social harmony in Ondo; in order to appraise the immense significance of the various exploits and life – style that were recorded about Ogun deity in Ondoland. The aesthetic value or merit of this poetic form, however, is to the Ondo secondary to its religious significance.

This study however reveals that the Òndó indigenes are not weavers of aso-okè, the narrow strip cloth, but good merchants and patrons of the old aso-òkè types. It also attributes the sustenance of the weaving industry that thrived in the town in the early part of the 20th century to the migrant weavers from Iseyin and Ilorin. Introduction Ondo town is located in the South-eastern part of Yorùbá Kingdom, about 64 kilometers from its location to Ile-Ife and about 45 kilometers south of Akure, the Ondo State capital. The people of the town claim to have descended from Odùduwà, the progenitor and founder of the Yorùbá race. The kingdom situated in the tropical rainforest, hence the people have always engaged in farming, an occupation that is mostly practiced by men. Farming is the mainstay of Ondo’s economy. Before the introduction of cocoa and rubber to Ondo in the early twentieth century, the people are known for production of kolanut, pàkálà (local beans), plantain, yam and some other foodstuffs common to the rainforest regions.

It discusses non-formal and formal education of African women and the artistic forms--expressions, symbols, and elements--that African women use to shape the environment. It discusses the evolution of the roles of African women, focusing on the effects of Ali Mazuri's triple heritage, which presents African history as composed of three principal influences: traditional, Islamic, and western. The paper concludes that today, post-colonial African women are struggling to become forces to reckon with as in pre-colonial times, and that African nations need to return to the traditional concepts of empowerment and integration of the female population.
