  • MHA Newsletter July 2015
MHA Newsletter No. 6/2015 www.mha.org.au July 2015 Merħba! A warm welcome is extended to all our June 2014 members and friends. THE MALTESE HISTORICAL Joe Borg’s lecture about the great Siege on 16 June June 2014 was well attended, and he has sent us a summary of his ASSOCIATION (AUSTRALIA) talk. A link to the PowerPoint and lecture recording are provided in case you missed it. After the lecture, two invites you to attend the new members joined the MHA, Marie Pirotta and John Melbourne launch of the Bonnice. I am sure you will make them feel welcome, with true Maltese hospitality. John contributed the commemorative book: excellent pictorial essay on Fort St Elmo to the last newsletter. Malta and the ANZACS - You may recall that at our last AGM the MHA agreed to Nurse of the Mediterranean help sponsor the publication of Frank Scicluna’s book, Malta and the ANZACS - Nurse of the Mediterranean. It has finally been released. As an individual sponsor, I have already received a copy, which I have reviewed on page 6 of this newsletter. In a word, it is superb! The Maltese Consul General, Mr. Victor Grech, will officially launch the book in Melbourne at our next meeting on 21 July. The author, Frank Scicluna OAM, will be in attendance, speaking about his book and will be bringing copies for sale. It is a public event, so tell everyone you can think of. Malta’s role in World War I makes me particularly proud of my Maltese heritage. Joe Borg’s third lecture on the Great Siege was originally scheduled for this month but will be postponed to September.

  • Franciscan Sacramentary Supplement
1 FRANCISCAN PROPER OF THE SAINTS July 4 1. The rank of the celebration (solemnity, feast or memorial) is indicated for each day. If there is no indication, it is an optional memorial. 2. For each solemnity and feast a proper Mass is provided in its entirety. This is therefore used as given. 3. For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. The page reference in each case indicates only the beginning of the common to which reference is made. c) If the rederence is to more than one common, one or the other may be used, according to pastoral need. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. For example, if a saint is both a martyr and a bishop, either the common of martyrs or the common of pastor (bishops) may be used. d) In addition to the commons which express a special characteristic holiness (e.g., of martyrs, virgins, or pastors), the texts from the common of saints, referring to holiness in general may always be used. For example, in the case of a saint who is both a virgin and a martyr, texts from the common of saints in general may be used, in addition to texts from the common of martyrs or the common of virgins. e) The prayers over the gifts and after communion, unless there are proper prayers, may be taken either from the common or from the current liturgical season.

MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 226 July 2018 1 MALTESE E-NEWSLETTER 226 July 2018 Pope Francis appoints Adelaide’s Fr Charles Gauci as the seventh Bishop of Darwin Bishop-elect Charles Gauci Pope Francis has appointed Fr Charles Gauci, administrator of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Adelaide, as the seventh Bishop of Darwin. Fr Gauci was born into a faith-filled family in Malta and arrived in Australia as a 13-year-old. He was ordained for Adelaide in 1977 and has served in parishes across the Archdiocese. He has also held a number of archdiocesan leadership roles, including as chairman of the Council of Priests. Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Mark Coleridge welcomed the appointment, announced 27 June, saying he will be “a great gift to the Church in Darwin with all its challenges and also a good addition to the Bishops Conference”. Known for his deep spirituality and commitment to evangelisation, Fr Charles has served as a pastor in parishes, a school chaplain, spiritual director and retreat leader, Archbishop Coleridge said. The bishops’ conference reports that Fr Gauci was born into a faith-filled family in Malta and arrived in Australia as a 13-year old. He was ordained for Adelaide in 1977 and has served in parishes across the Archdiocese. He has also held a number of archdiocesan leadership roles, including as chairman of the Council of Priests. Fr Gauci said he was introduced to the life of the Diocese of Darwin and the faith of the community there when he was invited to lead a retreat for the priests of the diocese about three years ago.

MALTA PAINTED BY VITTORIO BORON DESCRIBED BY FREDERICK W. RYAN 488742 30. 3- LONDON ADAM & CHARLES BLACK 1910 TO COUNT GIROLAMO TAGLIAFERRO THIS BOOK IS AFFECTIONATELY INSCRIBED BY THE WRITER PREFACE THE following text is intended to give no more than a slight sketch, aided by Signer Boron's effective pencil, of the manifold interests to be found in Malta. While the archaeology of the island and its con- nection with the Order of St. John of Jerusalem have from time to time attracted attention, English writers seem regrettably to have neglected other topics presented by this unique Imperial posses- sion, such as the folk-lore and literature of the the of the Maltese language ; growth early Christian of the nature of the ' Church Malta ; Consiglio Popolare' that gleam of constitutional govern- ment in the Dark Ages quite as interesting as the or the social Wittenagemote ; and economic condition of the Maltese people under the Knights and in the early days of British rule all of which have engaged the attention of Italian and Maltese historians. vi PREFACE Circumstances have not allowed more than a passing allusion in the following pages to such subjects : they are here mentioned to indicate the fruitful field of research embraced by the Malta Historical and Scientific Society, formed last year in Valletta, which proposes, under the guidance of its President, Professor Napoleon Tagliaferro, to * study the history and archaeology of the Maltese ' Islands and other scientific subjects of local interest an association well worthy of the support of British residents in Malta. The vast contents of the Record Office in Valletta and oral tradition the latter nowhere stronger than in these islands may on examination con- tribute many valuable additions to literature and history.

Although the Agency continued to strive to achieve satisfactory results in the number of visitors and generation of revenue it closed its books with a deficit. Besides organising several popular exhibitions and participated in important exhibitions abroad it continued to invest more in the sites under its management. During the year under review it also increased the number of staff employed not only to improve its operations but also to increase the resources needed for the vast number of cultural activities, projects and work carried out throughout the year. The Agency finances its operations through revenues, mainly from admission fees to museums and sites, and also from a Government subvention. The net revenue generated from admission fees by the Agency in 2019 reached €8,657,464 (2018: €8,957,154).
