THE HISTORIC ROUTE 66 MERAMEC RIVER BRIDGE ATTIMES BEACH WILL STAND, AT LEAST FOR AWHILE. BUT THERE IS STILL MUCH TO BE DONE. A MAJOR DONATION HAS CLEARED THE WAY FOR MISSOURI STATE PARKS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE SPAN, BUT MILLIONS MORE ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETE RESTORATION OF THE BRIDGE TO CARRY BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC - AND TO REUNITE BOTH SIDES OF ROUTE 66 STATE PARK.

nJanuary2016, Missouri State Parks announced that the Iagency would accept ownership of the Meramec River Route 66 (Times Beach)Bridge if an endowment of $1,000,000 could be provided no later than December 31,2016. Bridge ownership had been in question since MoDOT removed the bridge from the state highway system in 2009. It was a daunting request. Although a portion of the endowment funds were available through MoDOT ($325,000, which was to be used for demolition should the bridge campaign fail) and Missouri State Parks ($100,000), it was up to the stakeholders to find the remaining $525,000. Stakeholders immediately launched a FacebookiGoFundMe campaign and began to brainstorm. Initially, not much happened - bur in May, 2016, something did happen that in retrospect seems significant. On a chilly morning in early May, a group of abour 30 people gathered in front of the bridge to participate in the National Trust's annual "This Place Matters" campaign, which raises awareness abour endangered historic properties. Once the image was posted on Facebook and GoFundMe, people began to take notice. Donations began to increase, an artist from Minneapolis donated her talents to create/sell t-shirts (donating profits to the bridge campaign), and new faces began to show up at the monthly stakeholder meetings. One of those faces was Philip Stupp, whose family started Stupp Bridge and Iron Company in the 1850s. His wife, Judith, had caught notice of the preservation effort to save the bridge and asked her husband if his family's company had anything to do with the bridge - Mr. Stupp thought not. (THEN) F. Naramore and WD. Bradfield opened the 66 Drive-In at Carthage on September 22, 1949. "Two Guys from Texa " was the first feature. The drive-in closed in 1985 and the lot became a salvage yard filled with junked vehicles. The screen and the marquee were fading fast when this view was made in 1992.

(NOW) Mark Goodman hauled away the junk, cleaned up the site and re-opened the drive-in on April 3, 1997 and the drive-in is now the sole survivor of the six that once bore the 66 name. In March 2017, Mark and Dixie Goodman old the Route 66 Drive-In ro former Jasper County Sheriff's Deputy athan McDonald and his family. Mark and Dixie still plan to help with the operation.
