The subject of fascination for folklorists, cryptozoologists and the general public alike; in East Anglia stories abound of a huge, devilish hound, with saucer-shaped eyes and followed by the demonic stench of sulphur; Black Shuck.     THE FOUR-EYED DOG1 Shunsuke Okunishi [email protected] Abstract: The first domesticated animal, the dog has always held an important role in human culture, the beliefs and traditions associated with its presence being as old as the first dog that started living with humans. The present paper focuses on the symbolism of the dog in Japanese culture from a comparative perspective. Four types of mythical dogs are analyzed here. First, the hellhound (or the watchdog from hell), a legendary creature that has been perceived as dual and thus endowed with special powers that allow it to guard the border between the realm of the living and that of the dead, at the same time acting as a guide for the souls. Second, the four-eyed dog, a motif related to that of the watchdog from hell, due again to its dual characteristic. Third, the spotted dog, an animal of ambiguous color used for rituals and as a sacrifice. Fourth, the ancestor dog, a widespread motif in the world cultures: a human female and a male dog have offspring together, their children becoming heroes or the founders of great tribes. The grotesque for Rabelais is inherently positive and celebratory. This has led to all my readings and associations with the idea of grotesque as always already affirmative. The second inspiration for this theme was another satirist, who also happened to be an admirer of Rabelais, Jonathan Swift. Swift uses the grotesque body to critique the Enlightenment‘s ideal of the disembodied mind. He pulls his reader down from an elevated platform and seats him (through both his prose works as well as poetry) at par with the apparently sub-human.     The Black Dog The Black Dog: Origins and Symbolic Characteristics of the Spectral Canine Adam Zmarzlinski Jagiellonian University Abstract The Black Dog is a folklore staple, easily recognizable by its mangy back hair, ominous pres- ence, and ember-filled eyes. It is also a symbolic narrative tool in pop culture, as seen in Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. However, it did not emerge from a void; Black Dog lore stems from Ulysses’ Argos, continues through the Aesopian dogs, and borrows the- matic nuances from werewolves, but its foundations stand firmly on the backs of mythology’s noble hounds: Cerberus and Fenrir, who provide literary and psychological symbolism via their representation of the subconscious triumvirate (superego, ego, and id), temporal triumvirate (past, present, and future), and the Jungian shadow. Furthermore, Cerberus’ role—whose im- age, I argue, is most influential—as a guardian, not of the boundary between life and death, but between reality and fantasy, is the primordial father of the allegory of self-perpetuating imagination, of which the Black Dog is a vital fragment. Normally you couldn't convince me to venture into a forest for love or money, except I'm here because my dad guilted me into it and bought me a sweet new desktop as the lure for his trap. Let me try again, you can get me to wander into a forest with love and money but you better have a goddamn lot of both. My dad and I get along great I swear, it's just, I'm a geek and my dad... isn't. In fact my dad is an avid outdoorsman, which makes us something akin to oil and water. Mostly we accept each other as the flawed individuals we are, but occasionally we try to get one another to appreciate our hobbies which is why my dad has seen all of Firefly and I can light a campfire using steel and flint. Don't judge me, I resisted as best I could, but some knowledge just seeps in. Anyway, when I moved to California for college I swore that I was done with nature. Trees? Who needs 'em. Fresh air? Overrated. Sunlight? Bah, at least indoors I'm at less risk of skin cancer. My dad on the other hand gave me several recommendations for good hikes in the local area.
