AGES Software Rio, WI USA Version 1.0 © 2000 2 Seven Sleepers the heroes of a celebrated legend, first related by Gregory of Tours at the close of the 6th century (De Gloria Martyrum, c. 96); but the date of which is assigned to the 3d century and to the persecution of the Christians under Decius. According to the narrative, seven Christians of Ephesus took refuge in a cave near the city, where they were discovered by their pursuers, who walled up the entrance in order to starve them to death. A miracle, however, was interposed in their behalf, they fell into a preternatural sleep, in which they lay for nearly two hundred years. The concealment is supposed to have taken place in 250 or 251, and the sleepers to have been reanimated in 447. Their sleep seemed to them to have been for only a night, and they were greatly astonished, on going into the city, to see the cross exposed upon the church tops, which but a few hours ago, as it appeared, was the object of contempt. Their wonderful story told, they were conducted in triumph into the city; but all died at the same moment. -

Abstract: Drawing in nightmares, shadows and loneliness, this article follows a rarely- trodden and difficult path across the shifting geology of Norfolk; a track marked by fleeting glimpses and horrible signs of the deadly consequences of deep time and human choice. The subject of fascination for folklorists, cryptozoologists and the general public alike; in East Anglia stories abound of a huge, devilish hound, with saucer-shaped eyes and followed by the demonic stench of sulphur; Black Shuck. Pursued by - rather than pursuing - footprints in the mud, whispered stories from isolated places, and the mysteriously mutilated corpses of deer, this ethnographic description considers the significance of encounters with this phantasm for recent debates surrounding the proper understanding of the beginning of the Anthropocene, and the implications of this for our sense time and responsibility. In this era of unprecedented human power over the natural world, the Shuck - the mere sight of whom brings death - still haunts us; his chthonic presence reminding us of the inexorable, yet unpredictable power of death. By attending the monstrous, spectral ambiguity of the Shuck, and his ability to reformulate the landscape of East Anglia as a social space, this article explores the how coeval quality of the longue durée of deep time, and the haunting rupture entailed by the prospect of our own mortality, can enchant, rather than blunt, our sense of human responsibility in the Anthropocene. -

I would like to start by thanking the organizers for their generous hospitality and for their meticulous efforts in putting this event together Ladies and gentlemen, The Islamic religious significance of the Holy Aqsa mosque is no secret; being the pearl of holy Jerusalem, the first Qibla and the third holiest of sites. The religious, historical and cultural value of the Islamic Holy sites in Jerusalem is well known, this makes it our responsibility to protect these sanctities against the attempts of abuse, division and religious site appropriation; an urgent Islamic duty for all of us. The historical role of the Hashemite Custodianship of Jerusalem and the Holy Sites, makes it the Hashemites’ 1 responsibility to defend the nation and care for its culture, moreover King Abdullah II Bin al Hussein also assures that his duties as a Hashemite King include the protection of Muslim and Christian holy sites, as He pledged his commitment to preserving them as a safe places of worship. This fact has been stressed in historical documents signed between His Majesty and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. In addition, on many occasions, His Majesty has stressed that he seeks to express the true image and teachings of Islam based on moderation, and the rejection of violence, extremism, and terrorism. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Analecta Cracoviensia ORIENTALIA CHRISTIANA CRACOVIENSIA 2 (2010) Bartłomiej Grysa Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań The Legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus in Syriac and Arab sources – a comparative study The Legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, in the Syriac tradition known as Aḥē Dmīḥē or Ṭalyē d-Efesōs, in Arabic as Ahl al-Kahf or Aṣḥāb al-Kahf, is one of many examples of borrowings from the Christian tradition made by the Muslim one and above all by the Koran. In the region where Islam evolved in the beginning, there was a population professing Judaism and Christianity. Judaism was professed by ca. 1 per cent of the population of the Arabian Peninsula. Christianity, for its part, was professed by ca. 10 per cent.1 Thus Mohammed had an easy access to the monotheistic religious ideas that existed on the Arabian Peninsula. The Muslim tradition maintains that one of the first questions Jews asked Muhammad, when he came to Medina, concerned exactly the Seven Sleepers.2 Finding the influence of the Jewish tradition on the emergence of a Muslim version of the legend, however, seems unlikely. The text of Ibn ‘Abbās, a cousin of Mohammed, one of the first exegetes of the Koran, sheds some light on it. Ibn ‘Abbās reported that one of the Brothers descended to Ephesus after their awakening and after sleeping more than 300 years he pointed to the house where he claimed to live, thus proving his Ephesian origin to a local ruler. -

Ab' Huraira's Cat in Goethe's Paradise*
Hamdard Islamicus 7 Vol. XLI, Nos. 3 & 4 ABÕ HURAIRA’S CAT IN GOETHE’S PARADISE* GABOR KORVIN 1121 Budapest, Koelto-u, 2-4, A/3, Hungary. email: [email protected] It is an old question of Goethe Forschung1 why did the poet include a cat, AbË Hurairah’s nameless kitten, among the four privileged animals allowed to enter Paradise. Around the end of the Book of Paradise of Goethe’s West-Eastern Divan (West-östlicher Divan, WöD for short), in the poem Favoured Animals (Begünstigte Tiere), after the ass of Jesus (*), the wolf of MuÍammed (œ), and the dog of the Seven Sleepers (AshÉb-i Kahf), follows the cat, “Here purrs Abuherrirah’s cat/Round him, with coaxings bland;/A holy creature sure is that/Stroked by the Prophet’s hand”2 (in the original:3 “Abuherrira’s Katze hier/Knurrt um den Herrn und schmeichelt:/ Denn immer ist’s ein heilig Tier/das der Prophet gestreichelt”). These four simple lines suggest several problems: (1) Why was the name of AbË Hurairah (R.A.)4 (Companion and friend of MuÍammed [œ]) misspelled by Goethe as “Abuherrira”? (2) What were the sources for Goethe in selecting these four animals to enter Paradise? (3) Why did Goethe assume that the Prophet (œ) stroked AbË Hurairah’s cat? The misspelling of AbË Hurairah’s name in Goethe’s poem apparently has not been noted yet in the Goethe literature. Ancient Metal Books and Tablets in History and Lore In 1973 in Ahwaz the Iranian Mandaean Sheikh Abdullah Khaffagi showed Jorunn Jacobsen Buckley a lead codex of the Book of John: We helped him pull out a large cloth bag, like the others, but this one was heavy as a rock. It was an archetypal book, The Book of John, made entirely of lead, inscribed with stylus on lead pages bound together like a regular book. No wonder it was heavy. Its edges were frayed and worn. We leafed through it reverently. C. G. Jung might have fantasized about a tome like this. There is probably not its like in the world. Sheikh Abdullah told us that the book was 2,053 years old and written by John the Baptist himself. There and then, it seemed a likely view.1 As the eminent Semiticist Dr Charles Häberl of Rutgers University informed one of the Centre’s Evaluation Panel scholars, the Mandaeans still produce lead copies of Sidra d- Nishmatha as part of their baptismal rites. He had a huge realm and an immense army. He became the enemy of another king, and they went to war. That king was defeated, and Daqyānūs killed him. The defeated king had six sons. Daqyānūs took them with him as prisoners of war. He caused them to worship him. Claim- ing to be a god—may his mouth be filled with dust!—he made them prostrate themselves before him. One day the message arrived that an enemy was approaching. Daqyānūs heard this and trembled in fear. It has been related: While Daqyānūs was sitting on the throne in the palace, two cats that were fighting and howling at each other fell through the palace window. Daqyānūs was frightened by the noise the cats made and he fainted. The six brothers saw this and said: “And he is supposedly a god? How can he be afraid of cats? Let us leave this place and look for the true God.” And they decided to run away. Tamlīkhā said: “The time for flight will be when we’re playing polo. When we ride toward the palace, we must strike the ball gently; when striking it in the direction of the open field, let’s strike the ball hard.” f.178r11 During the game Daqyānūs would watch from a tribune. THE FOUR-EYED DOG1 Shunsuke Okunishi [email protected] Abstract: The first domesticated animal, the dog has always held an important role in human culture, the beliefs and traditions associated with its presence being as old as the first dog that started living with humans. The present paper focuses on the symbolism of the dog in Japanese culture from a comparative perspective. Four types of mythical dogs are analyzed here. First, the hellhound (or the watchdog from hell), a legendary creature that has been perceived as dual and thus endowed with special powers that allow it to guard the border between the realm of the living and that of the dead, at the same time acting as a guide for the souls. Second, the four-eyed dog, a motif related to that of the watchdog from hell, due again to its dual characteristic. Third, the spotted dog, an animal of ambiguous color used for rituals and as a sacrifice. Fourth, the ancestor dog, a widespread motif in the world cultures: a human female and a male dog have offspring together, their children becoming heroes or the founders of great tribes. Keywords: Four-eyed dog, watchdog, hellhound, Cerberus, spotted dog, Hososhi. 1) The Taboo Dog Though almost extinct in contemporary culture, until a few decades ago there was a superstition in Japan that four-eyed dogs should not be kept around the house, as they could bring misfortune to their owners. The dog in question is brown, with short hair and a whitish speck on each of its eyebrows, the most popular traditional breed being Shiba (bush), thus named because it brings to mind the bushes which have lost their leaves in winter.
